Range hoods....do they always need to be wider than the range?
Comments (6)With surrounding cabinets and, I'd assume, a back wall a 36" hood over a 36" range should work fine. Be prepared to have a little more grease collect on the edge of the cabinets and back wall. Routine cleaning should prevent any nasty build up. How high you mount your hood also plays in to the size of hood. Typically hoods are mounted around 30" from the top of the range but there's a pretty wide variation. I've seen people go as low as 25" or so. That's too low IMHO especially with higher end (i.e. higher BTU/h) cooking surfaces. At about 28-32" mounting height, standard 36" with cabinets and back wall should be fine. If you go as high as 36" or more, then I'd look at a hood that extends out farther from the back wall. This will allow it to capture the fumes coming away from the wall better. I have an island configuration which is the worst since there's nothing to contain the fumes and sight lines are a concern. When we had our hood installed, the installer showed us what the recommended 30" height would look like. At that height, the bottom edge of the hood would be right at the bridge of my nose which would block the sight line across the island and I think cause me to bump my head if I had to lean across to reach the back burners. I ended up having him move it up to between 34-36" position which worked a lot better. Fortunately, we did have the foresight to oversize our hood. In the end, you will have to make your own trade offs between performance, aesthetics, and cost....See MoreHood wider than range - OK with upper cabinets?
Comments (15)Angie, found your comment interesting. I have a bottle green Blue Star 30 RNB. Love the range, but like Tina have often thought may-be I should have gotten black or brown-black rather than green. I do like the green with the wood, and it restates the green used throughout our house, but still I sometimes think I should have gone with something more neutral, and that black or stainless would have been more "authentic" looking as we have a period looking kitchen. Do not want to hijack Tina's thread -- may-be we should do a thread on color range -yes or no?...See MoreHow much smaller than hood can insert be?
Comments (1)bump...I think I've looked at every provider now (Wolf, BEST/Broan, Abbaka, Imperial, Zephyr, Windster, Faber, Viking, Prestige, etc) and they're all going to be smaller than ideal. Also since they invariably have the controls/lights as part of them that makes the actual capture area smaller still. Is this going to work or do I need to get a custom insert made for this project? (more $$$ but perhaps worth it?)...See MoreVent Hood Dilemma - Same size or wider than range & gap or no gap?
Comments (9)From Proline Range Hoods FAQ section: "The third variable which affects the effective capture area of your range hood is the size of the hood. You can have the strongest and most powerful vent hood, with the best design, and if you don’t cover the cooktop and trap the cooking exhaust you can never get rid of it. This is especially true for range hoods over island cooktops. Once you have considered your cooking style consider the size of the range hood. Try to size the hood 6” larger in width than the cook top. Most range hoods come in 22-27” depths with some of the range hoods being 30” deep. The more coverage the better for the serious cooks. If you use your cooktop and you are serious about cooking then remember “coverage is king” especially in an island range hood setting. You can also help yourself by trying to keep your cooking over the primary capture area of your range hood. BBQ and Heavy Smoke cooking environments, both indoor and outside need coverage so size of the range hood is critical. Again, if you can catch the smoke and exhaust you can get rid of it but if you don’t “trap” or catch the smoke it is almost impossible to get rid of without removing an inefficient unnecessary amount of additional air in the room. All of which must be heated or air conditioned in most cases." http://www.prolinerangehoods.com/1-801-973-3959/support/common-questions/...See MoreM Miller
