After: Vilov stripped the space, removing the angled island, cabinets, fireplace and bulkheads to create a simpler rectangular footprint in which to work.
The refined color and materials palette includes black enamel Shaker-style cabinets with touches of rustic wood on the peninsula back and range hood. “Black can be very heavy and feel weighted,” Vilov says. “We saw photos on Houzz and elsewhere with this kind of wood detail and thought it was a nice way to lighten up the room.” The walls are a coordinating light brown, warm beige color (Oyster Bar by Sherwin-Williams).

Peel-and-stick wood panels with a matte charcoal finish wrap the custom range hood. A band of stained wood coordinates with the trim on the peninsula. “It was about character and texture,” Vilov says. “You have that full wall with no uppers, so we wanted [the hood] to be a focal point.”

2. Lighter and Brighter
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: Bryan and Lisa Kelly, co-founders of online retailer PrairieMod
Location: Wheaton, Illinois
Size: About 150 square feet (14 square meters)
Designer: Susan Klimala of The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn
Before: After searching Houzz for ideas on layout and finishes, these Illinois owners reached out to designer Susan Klimala to create a visually appealing kitchen that was lighter, brighter and more user-friendly.
The previous kitchen had awkwardly placed dark cherry cabinets that made the space feel heavy, and the cooking, prep and cleaning zones felt squished together. The difficult layout included a tiny cabinet between the dishwasher and oven that wasn’t large enough to store much. And having the dishwasher and oven open at the same time was impossible.

After: By moving the refrigerator to the right of the range, the cooking area, with a stainless 30-inch five-burner gas range, now feels comfortable and spacious. Above the range is a custom hood with a white oak detail along the base.
The homeowners’ collection of black pottery inspired the color palette for the herringbone backsplash, made of handmade black tiles with a light gray grout.
The dishwasher and microwave are located in the new quartz-topped island. Unlike in the previous kitchen, all appliances in the remodeled space can fully open with ease.

After: A new custom range hood made of white oak adds a classic touch that complements the new flooring. The backsplash is laser-cut marble and brass inlay. New green cabinets flank the range.
“If we had used the same range wall tile throughout the kitchen it would’ve lost its impact,” Wintersteen says. “The range wall is now its own moment and the star of the kitchen.”

Who lives here: Tom and Heather Phillips, their two teenage sons and their German shepherd
Location: Centreville, Virginia
Size: 250 square feet (23 square meters), including the pantry
Designers: Shelley Vilov (kitchen design) and David Jordan (project manager) of Jordan Design-Build Group
Before: The angled island and three-sided fireplace in the previous kitchen made it feel cramped and outdated. So these Virginia owners reached out to designer Shelley Vilov and project manager David Jordan to create a more functional layout with a blend of black, brass and wood elements.
The couple had updated some appliances — the dishwasher and refrigerator — before the renovation but needed help rethinking the layout and maximizing counter space and storage. Using Houzz to buy products and exchange design ideas, the team transformed the kitchen into a space that met all the owners’ requirements.
