New Lawn - feasible to DIY?

Hi all,

We recently had a swimming pool removed, and now have a big (600sq ft) dirt patch in our back yard. Not top soil, just dirt. We'd like to put in some kind of lawn (drought-resistant sod) for our two 3-yo to play in, but having spent a small fortune to have the pool removed, can't really afford the $4k-5k price tag we have been quoted from several companies for hiring someone.

I'm wondering if it's crazy to think we can do it ourselves? We're willing to expend physical energy but are not very experienced in lawn or landscaping, so I'm worried about putting so much time and money into something that may be doomed to fail.

For perspective, here are some details: We're in Northern California, so are thinking about a drought-resistant sod variety. We are able-bodied and hubby is strong, but neither of us is burly. We are intelligent and practical people but do not have a background or much experience with lawn care (but can learn, if it is learnable). We would also attempt our own installation of irrigation, thinking the RainBird 32ETI, since it is meant for non-professionals.

Really appreciate your assessment and feedback!!
