I was considering the 10695 Lawn Boy - as Toro has swallowed LB, perhaps most LB are green Toros - not all bad at all....Much as Buick and Chevrolet are all GM, but the Buick is better (or at least they were)...

I like the idea of pressure lubrication - one thing that made Ford and Plymouth better than Chevrolet back in 1940.
My so-called lawn is on slopes and hills - were it flat, I'd use a cheap push mower and be done with it...

I have used a L-B 10696 which is the electric start version of the 10695. Even though it's heavier than I like, it maneuvers fairly easily. The Sens-A-Speed works well and does not lock the rear wheels when pulling backward. The Honda GCV160 is smooth and reasonably quiet and I really like the auto opening choke. Mulching is good as long as you're not cutting off too much grass.
I still prefer mowing with my 2 older Toros because of their 2-stroke engines; single gear, bail operated SP systems; and lighter weight.

The Insight Series is much more innovative than the Gold series, which is basically a green Toro Recycler - not that that's bad, just the way it is. The Insight, including the 10695 you're looking at, is a totally different kind of mower. I have a 10684 (with Tecumseh engine) and I like it a lot. Most of us are in the habit of looking for better technology all the time, which you would expect in this digital world, but outdoor power equipment, particularly lawn mowers, don't necessarily need it. OHV is fine, and Honda's innovative OHC engine is too, but there is nothing wrong with a good old L-head as long as it gets the job done by meeting the power and emissions requirement. In fact, there are some benefits to the 'flathead' mower engine, the main one being ease of service. In this particular case, you also get more power with the Tecmseh. Also, heat exchange is better with the plain finned head. The Honda GCV has the only internal (oil bath) timing belt on any kind of engine, and so far they have had only a few problems at first with the OHC engines, but the problems they did have were terminal - the valve train would jam, stopping the pulley, which was still being driven by the inertia of the flywheel/blade. This ripped the center out of the pulley, and the engine was a throw-away, since for the most part it's not feasible to repair it (replacements are about $179). I would buy a Honda HRX, considering the total package (Xenoy deck, 6.5HP GCV, Versa-mow, 9" wheels, etc.), but I don't think I want the 5.5HP GCV on somebody else's deck.

There are the new Insights in "plain" and "Gold".; the "Gold" (non-Insight) , and the commercial units..
Of the Insights, the Gold is better, IMO, with the Honda engine.
It is high time Tecumseh have bought out a more modern OHV engine..

I guess I'm a little puzzled by the direction the thread is headed. Puzzled in the sense that all of your questions have been about about cam and valve placement and engine design. It is a given that a mower from any of the big four will come with an engine that is durable, well designed and with enough power. Since we buy mowers to turn long blades of grass into short ones I would think questions about how well the mower handles that task would give you better information to base a decision on.

Also, the B&S Intek Pro on the Toro 20057, while it has an oil filter, does not have pressure lubrication. The oil pump only moves the oil through the filter. Of course, that's still a major benefit, but it's not exactly what it seems. The Tecumseh LV195 has an oil pump too, for lifting the oil to the upper bearing, but it's also not really a pressurized system. I think the Kawasaki engine is full pressure-lube.
I like Roadbike's comment that in mowers overall performance on the lawn is far more important than engine type or features. That's why I always recommend the Insight 10684 - it really works, without any surprising glitches, and it should be a durable performer.

I cannot see spending perhaps another $100 for the Honda engine ..
Insight Gold 10695 at a dealer for $ 450 or so
Insight non-Gold 10685 at HD about $350..
The really good lawn mowers seem only to be at the dealers..and their hours of operation are too restrictive..
I used a Honda 216VXA for about 3 weeks - it simply failed to impress me(overall), but it does have a good engine,IMO..
So now I'll try the 10685 Lawn Boy, if it is not so good , or it breaks, I'll return it..

The 10685 is Personal Pace, and the 10684 is Variable Speed. Are you already familiar with Personal Pace (Lawn-Boy 'Sens-a-Speed')?

Not really, the previous was front drive, replaced by the Honda VXA for 3 weeks.

Its "Smart ? Drive" did not work that well..

The Toro and Boy seem to have similar drive systems, IMO, the LB 10685/695 are better......

The American companies worry more about profits and greed.
While the Japanese invest more into developing better technology and building more modern factories.

Just to be clear - outside of a full pressure lube engine - from what I have read the oiling system on the Tecumseh engine should do the best job of keeping the engine oiled if you frequently depart "normal" tilt angles for operation. I believe that is about 15 degrees of slope. Extended operation outside 15 degrees will kill any 4 cycle engine from oil starvation. A pressure lube is the best solution - but they are hard to find (mainly available on commercial units which run close to $1,000). Checking out the Kawasaki is a good idea if you really have a need for extended operation on hillsides.

Of course the now EPA outlawed 2-cycle is the best/most cost effective solution to yards with steep hills.

IMO, the EPA should be "outlawed"!! They have gone too far, no way are a few 2 strokes going to hurt anything...

I have seen the commercial lawn mower with the Kawasaki engine - $1,400, a very well built 26" unit..
