bifold doors--replace with curtains?

My bifold doors stink--most are broken and I hate them. Do you think it lowers resale value if I remove the closet doors and use lovely decorative curtains? I would add molding to outside of closet to make a more finished look?

In my opinion, using curtains in place of closet doors looks low-rent to me. If you are selling, buyers will most likely feel that they'll have to spend money right off to buy new closet doors. If you can afford it, buy and install new bifold or sliding closet doors before your house is listed. The latest way to do this is with barn doors (see this site for pictures), although this will cost more than the other two options.

Don't do that! If you have a Habitat for Humanity in your area, you may get the same or better doors for next to nothing. Sliding are probably more current than bi-fold, but NOT with louvers. Be sure to take measurements before shopping!

I considered using a partial wall instead of doors. I tried taking a hot shower with my sliding doors open slightly and noticed a definite cool draft coming in through the opening. With the doors completely closed, there was no draft. Maybe this is more of a problem with a cooler room and hotter shower. Or it may be due to a high capacity exhaust fan. Some people may not mind the draft, but I didn't like it. I decided to go with doors that close off completely without even checking the water splash.

It won't look bad for the doors to be different as long as it's not right next to the other. My bedroom door is smooth, closet door is louvered. Same color. Looks fine.

That niche does not look bad. It would be easy to fit in two slim cabinets on either side of the machines to hide the dryer vent and supplies. Unless that is in an area that guests will always see, I would not go through the hassle of doors. Maybe some art on the wall and leave it as it is. The area looks very clean and spare.

Barn door? If you don't mind seeing the washer and dryer, you could install a panel to cover the hot water heater and just unscrew it when you need access, which you probably won't need very often.

I concur with the above. Curtains look cheap to me. Most buyers overestimate the cost to change something like that.

In a duplex I fixed up a year ago I replaced nearly all of the doors with "new" ones purchased from Habitat for Humanity, for $5 to $20 each.

Bifold doors are very inexpensive. Replace. curtains look really cheap.

I think we got sliding mirrored ones for a little over $100 each. Decide if they will look tacky (my teens wanted them in the bedrooms). Some people like them as full length mirrors and they can make a room look bigger and brighter. DO NOT use curtains!

I used curtains in my teen's rooms. When we replaced the curtains with doors the rooms looked 1000x better.
