Give us more to work with. What is the appearance of the rest of the room? Dimensions? Are these two sofas or a sofa and loveseat. Any chairs? What does the room open to?

The first thing that jumps out at me is the mess of wires coming from the tv to the side table. That is what I would first tackle. Would you be open to mounting the tv on the wall ab8ve the table thus hiding the web of wires? Then maybe balance the fireplace wall with a framed picture of a similar scale on the other side? I have my tv above my fireplace with the reciever separate under a window seat but not a single wire is visible . I neatly tacked all wires taught to the mantel and then tightly down the side of the wall and along the floor board to the reciever. It is a much better look and only takes alittle time.

Check out Ikea -- and add tall black bookcases to each side of the fireplace -- then all of the wires/TV stuff could be placed on the shelves and in dark woven baskets to hide it .....

Try placing the sofa in front of the window -- and add a large area rug to the seating area .....

Add a large dark wood square coffee table -- and some dark oil-rubbed lamps (table and standing lamps) around the space .....

Can't the TV wires go in the wall? An electrician can fix that...I would definitely hate seeing those wires. Can you do shelving on both sides of the fireplace? You can buy pre-made bookcases, and have them trimmed out to look custom and built-in. What type of window treatments are you thinking about? That would be a good area to add pattern & color.

The room opens up to the kitchen. And yes, love seat and two recliners joined by a cup holder. (Idk what it's called) AND YES! Those wires! Haven't taken care of it yet Bc we didn't know to get a component shelf, or bookcase or console table! Sorry for not being really detailed. No chairs, but we do have a papasan chair.

If the chair/drink holder & loveseat are the same length, you might want to have them face one another with a coffee table in front of both. I would place matching buffets on either side of the fireplace with artwork and lighting on each side. The buffet can store any AV equipment that needs to be stored. These buffets are from Overstock as it the artwork and the buffet lamps.

I would try the love seat in front of the window. That would open up the area between the the LR and kitchen. If you need more seating you could put a round table with a chair on each side there. The love seat closes in the room.

I would also remove the picture frames on the mantel.

What colors are in your other rooms that open up to your LR?

I can't tell from the angel of this picture, but I was wondering if the picture with the finger pointing is hung too high.

My only comment, so far, is that I would move the TV. That is just my personal preference, it looks like you would have to have your head bent back far to watch tv. My daughter had hers like that in a place she rented one time. It looked great, it was very uncomfortable to actually sit on the couch and watch tv.

Yes, i would defend definitely move the love seat in front of the window to open up the room. To cozy up the room you really need some color...perhaps in drapes and/or artwork or even paint. I like the suggestion of a buffet on either side as bookcases tend to be filled with stuff just to be filled.

I also think the tv is misplaced. It looks waaayyy squished up there just under the ceiling, and it looks like you'd have a stiff neck from watching it. And I don't like the things displayed on the mantel, interfering with the tv.

Is there any way you can move it to the wall either to the right or left of the fireplace? And lower it?

I like the idea of moving the TV! Which side would I move it to? I will move the one couch over to the window. We stuck it up there because the wall mount was already there and we didn't want to leave the table on the desk or ground. The stuff on the mantle I'll remove. the walls leading to the living room are the same color. My husband was suggesting we get an 8cube organizer on one side. But then again, he's a marine... And decorating is last on list of expertise. Lol!

If I were to get a rug, what size would be reasonable? Recommend a certain style, color or pattern? I currently do not have any colors (Bc I had no idea how I would narrow down the colors that would work and I knew I'd end up choosing my fave color instead.)

Also, what are your views on up-cycled furnture vs buying?
I live near plenty of thrift stores... Nothing but furniture peices! At AMAZING prices. Could I possibly find something there and repaint/stain?

Even I am worried about the mess of wires. Please get them fixed. Secondly on the walls Kilim rug with tribal design can be hung. These designs as they are handcrafted will be a valuable addition toy your home décor.

We love up-cycled furniture here. What is the height of the piece you posted a photo of?

I think Beverly's suggestion is excellent. I don't think the two cabinets have to match exactly. They just need to have something in common.

If you move the loveseat in front of the window, the tv should be to the left of the fireplace so it can be viewed from all of the seating.

My husbands moved things around, so don't mind the bookshelf.

I would not put a TV above a fireplace, but many people do it, and with using a tilting mount, they seem comfortable watching it. It's strictly personal taste.

Leaving the TV above the fireplace eliminates the need to figure out what to put on the mantel.

Different angle

There is nothing wrong with leaving the TV over the fireplace. It's simply mounted too high and should be moved down closer to the mantel. Your ceiling and the distance of the chairs does NOT cause you to be looking up in an uncomfortable position to see the image.

Since you're on a budget, may I suggest building storage using IKEA Besta components on either side of the fireplace. and getting a matching coffee table to complete the look. You can still have a grown up living room and benefit from the economy of IKEA items if you group them correctly. Good Luck.

I would surely upcycle if possible! It is cheaper and adds more interest than just buying new. Colorful rug, art on walls ( can be upcycled...can be objects rather than pictures), some lamps on tables....will warm things up. It looks much better with the furniture rearranged.

Yes, upcycling is a great idea. I Just bought a tall, maple cabinet with a frosted glass door from Habitat Restore for $15. It is very pretty in my bathroom! You can get some awesome pieces if you are willing to look and to clean them up and paint them if necessary.

Definitely like the love seat in front of the window.

I would put an end table with a lamp on it between the sofa and love seat, put a sofa table behind the sofa that has its back to the entry, keep the TV above the fireplace but lower it. I like a symmetrical look and if you put the TV on either side of the fireplace it would throw that off.

Decide what colors you want to accent with and use those colors in art work, drapes/panels and accessories. If you do use drapes, mount the rod higher and wider than the window.

You have a great room it just needs some tweaking.
