Help Me Design My Wine Cellar - Please!
At my house, we’ve always got a renovation project in the works. Just a week ago, we finished up a new master bathroom, and now we’re starting on a wine cellar. Apparently, we like the smell of drywall dust!
The opportunity to create a wine cellar popped up quickly, so we haven’t had a chance to do a lot of thinking about its design – but we’d love some suggestions! It’ll be a fairly utilitarian space, at least for the time being. It’s small, so we’ll mostly use it just to store wine, not for entertaining.
The space is actually underneath our front porch. When our house was built in 1954, the basement was dug out even under the porch. The rest of our basement is finished, but that room still has a concrete floor, cinderblock walls and a rough roof.
The pictures below show the space (the framing happened yesterday!) and some other rooms that I’m using for design inspiration. I’ll continue to post photos throughout the construction process, so everybody can see the progress.
We're thinking of using simple IKEA Swedish shelving for the wine - nothing fancy - but beyond that, we're stuck. If you have any ideas for design, please share them in the comments. They’ll be much appreciated, I promise you!
P.S. Oh yes - and we basically have no budget. The less expensive, the better. The current design doesn't have to last forever and hopefully we'll be able to invest more in the space in a few years. But for right now, cheap it is!

Now, onto what I like. I'm not actually a big fan of most "wine cellar" looks. I prefer lighter, brighter, more open spaces, like this one. These are also the colors of my kitchen - darker wood cabinets, stainless appliances and that cool green color on the walls. Even though the wine cellar's underground and a bit cramped, I'd like to bring as much light, color and space in as possible.
When you walk into the wine cellar space from the basement, this refrigerator and our sump pump are against the wall on the right. They'll stay there - the sump pump will be framed out and covered by a door, but the fridge will be exposed (unless anyone has suggestions). We use it for drinks and for extra storage when we have a party.
For right now, at least, we're leaving the ceiling rough and the floor concrete, but we thought of maybe warming the space up with some area rugs. I like the texture of this one. Is there anything else we're forgetting? I'm sure there is!
