Is this the final layour?
Comments (23)Oh I would love to have a greenhouse off my kitchen! Unfortunately there is no where to attach it! I think your plan is just perfect with the greenhouse off of one side and a porch on the other! I do love the look of a table in the kitchen, but the island will be very practical and give me more storage and work space. I am just trying to get the periphery cabinets in and then will add an island later. I am doing all drawers except for garbage pull out and sink base. Am going to redraw entire kitchen with details and changes and see how that looks. I need to come up with a hood design. I don't need a vent there since I have a direct vent out the back of the stove. Do you think I should do open shelves here too or is that getting too many open shelves? Below is a picture of our fireplace in the family room which is open to the kitchen. Do you think I can do something a little different in the kitchen? Perhaps a "shaped" hood or something with a slight arch. All my lines are square so am wondering if I should add some gentle arches or curves or cutwork somewhere or is that taking away from the look? Also thinking of making drop down counter wood instead of painted along with island and hutch cabinet. Don't know if I would like the mix of wood and paint together though....See MoreHow much continuity in your furniture styles from room to room?
Comments (11)I also like the look of the second stools best, but as others have said, not sure if I would put them up against the cherry. Love your cabinets, love your soapstone BTW! Regarding the upholstered stools, I know I would be afraid of kids + fabric but I might also be on the overcautious end of things. In our house there is not much continuity of furniture style from one room to the next in terms of everything being MCM or farmhouse or French country, because none of the rooms are any one particular style. Every room has a blend of thrift-store finds, family antiques, Crate and Barrel/IKEA, etc. I would not recommend my house as a model for anyone else's, other than to say when I am in a house that is all primitives or all Victorian or all French country or whatever, it often feels to me like I'm on a stage set rather than in a personal home. I lack the discipline and love too many different things to pull it off myself....See Morehelp what color furniture to get and what style?
Comments (8)samantha, congrats with your new home. 1, your tv should be moved off the fireplace. it will hurt your neck most do not recommend sectionals they are difficult to work with and often often do not provide as much space as you like. lastly the style really does not match the the setting of your home. if you still feel this is best for you, we will be happy to work around it for you. I just wanted you to think a bout it, because sometimes people think that they want one thing but once they get it, they always feel something is missing. talk soon. remember it should all be fun!...See Morehelp with furniture style and color
Comments (51)You said earlier in this thread that 'You' would rather return the rug, but that your Mom says she likes it and wants to keep it. I knew I wasn't imagining that whole thing, but I had to go back and read through some comments to make sure. (Btw, is this your space, or your Mom's?) And then you said, "However, depending on what style fits in that room she may change her mind though." And there are certainly plenty of people here who will help you to accomplish what you want, which is clearly to return the rug, and do something different in the space. And one of the main reasons they will help you to do that is because a) they do not personally like the rug, and/or b) they do not have a clue as to how to work with that rug. So they will have you get rid of it, and bring in something generic. Unfortunately, generic design (at best) is most of what gets tossed around on this forum. Also, please do not destroy your Mom's furniture by painting it. It looks like she has some nice pieces. If you want painted furniture, you can purchase tons of stuff that is a!ready painted, or get some cheap pieces to paint. Before you trash your Mom's pieces, consider selling them, instead. I suggest you appraise the pieces before selling. And btw, the tv placement is fine; it works in the space. The rug is fine, and can be totally worked with. You have received some ideas here to connect the rug with the spaces. If in spite of negative feedback from you and others on this post your Mom still wants to keep the rug, I suggest you consult with a designer to help you coordinate the space - and especially iif you want other ideas on working with the rug and don't believe the ideas you have received here are sufficient. There are many reasonable on line services. And it is a simple thing to coordinate that rug with the spaces. Any competent designer will easily be able to work with that rug. You are not going to get the design help to do that here with this crowd sourcing situation + the tone of this post. However, if you are just here to rewrite the space, carry on. My Best Wishes to your Mom....See MoreTalia Raviv
