I have a wonderful cookbook, published in 1913 with menues for every Sunday of the year. Now, I'm not sure if it is a slice of life from back then, or a fantasy of what Sunday dinners "should" be like, but it sure is interesting. It gives a menu, then the recipes for the dishes. It was written and compiled by a Mrs. Elizabeth O. Hiller , who was "the founder and Principal of the Chicago Domestic Science School, and a noted writer and lecturer on culinary subjects"

Here is the menu for the second Sunday in December, so you can run out and do your grocery shopping:

Oyster Soup

Boiled leg of Mutton - Caper Sauce

Savory Rice --Steamed Squash

Stuffed Egg Plant

Lima Bean Salad

Graham Bread Sandwiches

Fig Pudding

Cafe' Noir

There is a recipe for everything but the Cafe' Noir which I suspect is coffee, including the graham bread which makes 6 loaves!

Hmmmm...must get mutton and figs! Sounds like the kind of book I'd love to page through! Have you tried any of the recipes?

I think this sounds like a very interesting book. Not sure I'd like the food but I'd like reading the recipes. I found a few on e-bay and available as a free e-book somewhere else. I'd want a hard copy book.

LOL AnnaKay. Dinner was real good. Would have loved to share it with you. Glenda, I'm looking forward to Pinehurst. I've never been there. Sure hope we have good weather. I'm all packed and ready to go. Not too worried about DH. Our Wine and Dine group meets Wednesday night so He'll go out for dinner with them. He can rustle himself up a steak on Thursday. Angelaid -- that's one of my favorite meals! (Unless, of course, it comes in a frozen tray! I can't tell you how many times I ended up with a Swanson's turkey TV dinner when I was growing up and my parents had an evening meeting of their social groups!) Tonite, I stir-fried some cut-up chicken breasts, seasoned with lemon pepper and ginger (with a little cornstarch to give them a bit of a coating). I put the chicken over bagged salad spinach and diced orange bell peppers and had some poppy seed dressing on top. I'd been to Sears and Macy's earlier to check out their mattresses and I'm surprised I actually came up with a dinner idea I liked -- actually, I've made it plenty of times, but not recently.

Oh, we just watched the rest of Season 1 of Last Tango in Halifax, so I haven't come back to comment on anyone's dinners. I've got tears in my eyes. We love that show. But wow is Jillian one screwed-up woman. Raven, I buy the large old-fashioned ham with a bone that's wrapped in netting. Boil it for about 4 hours and put potatoes and green beans in with it. Lots of ham leftover for future meals. Hubby is looking forward to ham and french toast or pancakes. Neither of us like ham soup, split pea and ham and other similar soups. I'm hoping to make a quiche as well, and hubby said he would try it.

kathsgrdn, your naked burrito sounds like a tasty and quick dinner. I will have to try next week after DH gets home. We're trying to stay low carb and love Mexican, so that's perfect! What fun! I have my mother's "wedding day cookbook" from 1945. It is full of things like this, and I don't remember eating any of them growing up.

Our cookbooks and recipes will look just as hilarious to our grandkids. Since I started cooking in 1968 I've seen an enormous difference in the way we cook and the foodstuffs that were available then. Very interesting stuff. If I were to do my life over again, I think I would be a food historian. It would suit me to a T.

I love to read old cookbooks!
My mother saved her old Home Ec.book from
highschool and has always used recipes from it.
I have an old cookbook that looks like it was a
give away when you might have bought a fridge, in
the 40's or early 50's. It also has menus with the
recipes. It is my go to for really basic things, like
a good pie dough or a good basic muffin recipe.

Jean, my Gram always made big lunches on Sunday, they were always special like the one you listed. I have my mom's wedding cookbook too, Sherrmann! It is marked and stained with lots of tape on the spine to hold it together but it is one of my most prized possessions, due in large part to the notes she wrote in it. It tells everything from how to clean and butcher a rabbit to how to set a formal table to common substitutions and how to fix a mistake.

The Nov. 21 New Yorker magazine (Food Issue) has an article about recreating a Georgian dinner using the kitchens at Hampton Court Palace.

George III (the 'mad' king who lost us Colonials) had just recovered from an extended 'spell'. He was allowed back to table February 6, 1789. The menu for Their Majesties Dinner:

Soupe barley
4 chickens roasted
3 pullets minced and broiled
7 3/4 mutton collop pyes
6 perch boiled
2 breasts of lamb a la pluck
2 salmic of ducks
13 loin veal smort

That was the first course. LOL
