I think this sounds like a very interesting book. Not sure I'd like the food but I'd like reading the recipes. I found a few on e-bay and available as a free e-book somewhere else. I'd want a hard copy book.

What fun! I have my mother's "wedding day cookbook" from 1945. It is full of things like this, and I don't remember eating any of them growing up.

Our cookbooks and recipes will look just as hilarious to our grandkids. Since I started cooking in 1968 I've seen an enormous difference in the way we cook and the foodstuffs that were available then. Very interesting stuff. If I were to do my life over again, I think I would be a food historian. It would suit me to a T.

My mother saved her old Home Ec.book from
highschool and has always used recipes from it.
I have an old cookbook that looks like it was a
give away when you might have bought a fridge, in
the 40's or early 50's. It also has menus with the
recipes. It is my go to for really basic things, like
a good pie dough or a good basic muffin recipe.

Jean, my Gram always made big lunches on Sunday, they were always special like the one you listed. I have my mom's wedding cookbook too, Sherrmann! It is marked and stained with lots of tape on the spine to hold it together but it is one of my most prized possessions, due in large part to the notes she wrote in it. It tells everything from how to clean and butcher a rabbit to how to set a formal table to common substitutions and how to fix a mistake.

The Nov. 21 New Yorker magazine (Food Issue) has an article about recreating a Georgian dinner using the kitchens at Hampton Court Palace.

George III (the 'mad' king who lost us Colonials) had just recovered from an extended 'spell'. He was allowed back to table February 6, 1789. The menu for Their Majesties Dinner:

Soupe barley
4 chickens roasted
3 pullets minced and broiled
7 3/4 mutton collop pyes
6 perch boiled
2 breasts of lamb a la pluck
2 salmic of ducks
13 loin veal smort

That was the first course. LOL
