Another sad creature joins the group

Soon I will be adding another pet to my menagarie. It is a donkey that I have named Lucky. It isn't that I am so presumptious to think that an animal is lucky to come live here, but he is just lucky to be alive. A friend of mine boards her horses where there are many donkeys. The first five came from the BLM Adopt a Burro program, but they have been allowed to breed and have had no care and now they are as thick as fleas on a dog. The jacks kill other jacks and trample foals in the process. The jennys don't wean the foals from one year to the next, so yearlings are still nursing and new foals often die. If they had a larger area, they could probably run them off, or the others could escape, but they can't. They are in just about 40 acres.

One of the donkeys was chased through a fence, and had wire wrapped tightly around his leg. My friend got it off and has doctored him. I told her I'd like to have a donkey, and she said I could have him, or any of the others. I first saw him by battery operated hanging lamp, and he looked small and young, but saw him last night with a flashlight and after looking at his teeth, he is anything but young.

Probably around 10 years old. His injured leg is bad, but he also had an old injury on the same leg that looks like it may even have involved a fracture at some point. His hoof is deformed. He has a bad, healed injury to his mouth and he is a mass of scars. He had never been haltered until I put a halter on him last night, and I brushed him. He has never had any vet care or been wormed. Both of his ears have been bitten off by other jacks.

I will be bringing him home in a few days. I have to take him to the vet first and have him gelded. I will also pick out another one of the donkeys to keep him company here, since I know my horses won't like him, and I will have to keep them separate.

He looked so bad by flashlight last night...I can only imagine how much worse he will look in daylight. My friend said, "You don't have to take him if you don't want to." I told her I didn't have the heart to leave him behind.

Pictures will be forthcoming. As soon as I get the donkeys I want from the group...in a few days...I am turning this into the Humane Society. The man who owns them does nothing with them. People stop all the time and offer to buy a donkey and he doesn't want to bother with that. The only thing he does for them is give them hay in the winter. They have a barn, but no feed, medical attention and he just allows them to fight and kill each other. I was amazed at how gentle some of them are. It is heartbreaking.
