Decorating a chocolate chocolate cake

I made a Hershey's Chocolatetown Cake with chocolate buttercream icing. I'd like to put some Christmas-y decor on the top but am at a loss as to what. Thought about marzipan snowmen but they would look like they were made with yellow snow! LOL

I don't use corn syrup, artificial colors or flavors so "ready-made" stuff is out. I used up the last of my good chocolate so chocolate leaves are out. What suggestions do y'all have?

Pour batter into 8- or 9-inch square baking pan. In separate bowl, stir together remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar and remaining 4 tablespoons cocoa; sprinkle mixture evenly over batter. Pour hot water over top; do not stir. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until center is almost set. Let stand 15 minutes; spoon into dessert dishes, spooning sauce from bottom of pan over top. Garnish with whipped topping. I do plan on having three different mousses? in the middle - white, milk and dark. I can't believe how excited I am to make this cake. As much as I hate baking I do love decorating baked things. I guess I can go chocolate overload and do a chocolate fudge icing with a ganache too. I was thinking of sugaring some cranberries and having whipped cream spots around the outside border with a cranberry on each whip cream puff.

We've been using a Ghirardelli chocolate cake recipe for birthdays since the 50s. For frosting we always use some strong coffee as well as some milk. It's perfect. Dad's theory was that the purpose of cake was to deliver the frosting, and that mocha frosting was the best of all. :) He has a 4 yr old great-granddaughter, born many years after he passed away, who shares his opinion about the function of cake..

I was reading some of the reviews of that recipe, Jereme, and it appears that a few others have experienced the same outcome -- I always like to know I'm not alone:) So many variables in cake baking -- just a thought. I usually rely on "BraveTart" aka Stella Parks (Serious Eats) recommendations in baking, and she uses Gold Medal Flour All-Purpose flour in a lot of her cakes. White Lily Bleached All-Purpose Flour, 8 to 9% and Gold Medal shows at 10.5% (kind of an interesting look at contents here scroll down -- http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/17045/protein-content-flour) I'm wondering if maybe that bit more protein would add some of the structure that you're looking for. I admire your persistence. Although I'm allergic to nuts, I'd be an avid cake tester while you work through your tests:) CathyinSWPA

So....make homemade marshmallows. They are so easy and much better than store bought.

or meringue mushrooms:

Make meringue with equal weights egg whites and superfine sugar with 1/8 tsp cream of tarter and a pinch of salt per egg white. Pipe tops and stems smoothing any pointy bits on tops with a finger dipped in water. Bake long and slow. I do 190 overnight. Assemble by dipping bottom of tops in chocolate (or spread on with spatula) and push onto base. Dust with coco powder.

I put some whip cream puffs every two inches and put a white chocolate snowflake in the puff. They were pretty easy. Draw your snowflake, melt the chocolate, put template under parchment paper, pipe, done.

My girls once drew a design on the top of a chocolate cake using a toothpick, then sprinkled colored sugar in it to create a green tree. This was when they were little. It's not 3-D, but it turned out pretty cute.

I'm sure it's too late, but I'd probably grab the piping bag and make some red and some yellow buttercream and do small poinsettias around the edge. Use a leaf tip and make four, then four more on top and staggered around so they are filled in. Yellow dots for the centers, quick and Christmas-y.

Cookie, I love those white snowflakes, those are very cute and would be pretty even if they were just pressed into the chocolate buttercream.

An easy decoration for a chocolate-frosted cake is powdered sugar sifted sparingly onto a pretty paper doily. Start with a smooth surface on the icing using an offset spatula. For a pale-colored icing, same results with cocoa powder.
