Harvest season - black walnuts shell crackers

Black walnuts are currently falling off the tree near our woodworking shop. A few years ago I collected, hulled, shelled and dried a few pounds. It was a big messy project. I also attempted making ink with the hulls and left a jar on my porch that froze and thawed and made a huge mess.

I have avoided doing it again because of the amount of work but I really really liked the nuts. So this year I have started collecting the nuts. I hulled some this morning which is the messy part. Now I am tempted by the expensive specialty black walnut crackers. Partly because I like tools - especially ones that do a particular job well and don’t have motors. Does anyone else harvest black walnuts? Have you splurged on a heavy duty nut cracker? Or do you have another method?

My sister’s new pup Jack as cuteness tax.
