Look what I'm making for Halloween !!!

1 spice or German-chocolate cake mix

1 white cake mix

2 large packages instant vanilla pudding

1 large package of vanilla or lemon sandwich cookies

Green food coloring (optional - blue food coloring)

1 dozen small Tootsie RollsÂ®

1 new kitty litter pan

1 new kitty litter scoop

Prepare the cake mixes, using any size or shape of pan, according to package directions and allow to cool to room temperature.

Prepare pudding mix according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble the cake.

Crush the sandwich cookies in small batches into a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup of cookie crumbs, add a few drops of green food coloring, perhaps a drop of blue and mix until completely and thoroughly colored.

When the cake is cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Add 1/2 of the uncolored cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. IMPORTANT: mix in just enough pudding to moisten and hold the mixture together. Too much pudding will render the finished cake too soggy. Gently fold to combine.

Spoon the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box and smooth the top.

Heat three Tootsie RollsÂ® in the microwave until soft and pliable. Shape the ends so they're no longer blunt, but rounded and slightly curved. You know the effect you're trying to achieve! Repeat with three more Tootsie RollsÂ® . Stick these six Tootsie RollsÂ® in the cake/pudding/cookie mixture.

Sprinkle the remaining uncolored cookie crumbs over the top of the cake/pudding/cookie mixture. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top - the idea is to make it resemble the colored chlorophyll / deodorizer particles found in kitty litter.

Heat five Tootsie RollsÂ® in the microwave until almost melted, then scrape them onto the top of the cake and drag through and/or sprinkle with some of the cookie crumbs. Heat the last Tootsie RollÂ® in the microwave until pliable, then stick it over the side of the litter box and sprinkle lightly with the cookie crumbs.

Place a sheet of newspaper on your serving table, place the kitty litter box in the center and sprinkle with some of the cookie crumbs on the newspaper. Place the kitty litter scoop on or next to the little box.

Enjoy!

Variation

Bake both cakes in 13 x 9 pans, following the directions on the box. When cool, carefully remove the cakes from their pans. Instead of breaking up the cake into pieces, carefully slice each cake in half horizontally (Using a sawing motion with a piece of thread or dental floss sometimes works better for this instead of a knife!) and alternate layers of cake and pudding in the litter box, finishing with pudding and then follow the steps above for the Tootsie RollsÂ® and cookie crumb topping.

Ok, so-- 1) I'm somewhat inland- we get more sun that SF-- temps regularly reach the 80's and 90's in the summer, very rarely over 100, common morning fog burning off well before noon. 2) Common butterflies in the area-- Western Tiger Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail, Anise Swallowtail, West Coast Lady, Painted Lady, Monarch, skippers, perhaps the Mourning Cloak as well. All that's from other butterfly gardeners though, as I'm pretty new to this. Perhaps if Joe posts on here, he can give a more detailed answer about what we have around here. I'd love to hear if people have had personal experience with the bushes-- how they grew, how fast, how high, lots of butterflies? etc etc I figure you guys have got to be the real experts on that.

I'd cage big ol' "Ah-nowld" too. That's one wicked looking bird. LOL. Neat how you glittered him and did his eyes in glow red. 'Nevermore' is probably hiding from him, you know how brothers can pick on each other! Love all the cobwebs, and the way you disguised your normal art work is perfect. Way to go!! Yes, the Enablers here drag us into buying and decorating in ways we never have before. LOL I am going to do some cobwebs this year for the first time, have been really liking that look. I'm only doing a real small area for Halloween tho. My family-room mantel, the built-in shelves to left of it, and the small round table under them. Otherwise, just leaving up my Fall decor. And I am going to confine my Halloween decor pretty much to witch stuff. They are my favorites, and frankly, I just don't need to go overboard buying MORE holiday items to try and store. I've gone so nuts over Fall as it is, and Christmas of course, that somewhere in my life I need a little self-control. LOL. Zinsser makes a great primer. The others are right though, it won't go on evenly like your final coat. You're doing fine. :) I painted a wood desk last summer and when I finished with the primer, I thought the same thing, "oh, what a mess I've made." But then I put on the first finish coat (a black high gloss paint), all of my doubts went away. You may need to put on two coats of your regular paint though since you're covering the wood and primer. I would put one coat on and then see if you even need to fill those corners. A little spackle will work - no mixing needed. When you first apply it it will be pink and then it dries to white. Then you can lightly sand it and paint on your final coat. Also, as others mentioned..use a really good regular paint brush. It will have finer bristles and give you a nice, smooth application. The inexpensive brushes have courser bristles. Believe me, the brush does make a difference. Bottom line is... you're doing great! :)

Boy, does that sound like a fun program! Here is a recipe I LOVE. I love cabbage, apples, and caraway together, so I searched for recipes on line and finally selected this one, printed it, made it, and filed it away with my own comments and changes. Then I forgot I had it, and went through the process all over again a couple of weeks ago, searching, selecting, and printing. When I went to put the new recipe in the file, I laughed to see that it was the SAME one I had printed out last time -- and I had made the SAME notes and changes! Both times I had felt the dish needed both more caraway and some sweetness, for which I added concord grape wine, which made it perfect, in my opinion. It made the flavor much more complex. I will give you the recipe as I found it, with my changes in brackets. This recipe doesn't have bacon (no recipe you ever get from me will!), but you can probably add some if you like. Warm Red Cabbage, Red Onion, and Apple Slaw 5 T extra-virgin (only) olive oil 3 T balsamic vinegar [I like more] [a good splash of very sweet red wine, or maybe try some grape jelly or brown sugar] 1/2 head red cabbage [I used white once and it was fine] 1 large red onion [I used white once and it was fine] cut into 8 wedges [I cut it smaller] 1 t caraway seeds [I think it needs a lot more] 2 Granny Smith (or any tart) apples cored and cut into 8 wedges [I cut it into smaller pieces] salt and pepper to taste 1. Cut out the core of the cabbage and cut the cabbage into small pieces [I shred it] 2. Warm the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. 3. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, 2 minutes. 4. Add the cabbage, apples, caraway seeds, and vinegar [and wine or sugar]. Stir well. 5. Cook, uncovered, 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. 6. Season to taste with salt and pepper when the cabbage is soft. 7. Transfer to serving bowl and serve immediately [I found it just fine serving it later].

I've been to a party where they had one of those. I could not bring myself to indulge, but those who did loved it. You should get a stuffed cat to put beside just for presentation :o)

Ooooh Diana, I made that last year for an office party. They didn't know WHAT to make of it! Hilarious!

One year, I made a Meathead, check it out!

It's super easy, you take a plastic skull and wash it really well. Then you take a box of cranberry jello, using half the amount of water, mix it and pour it on a cookie sheet so it will gelantinize in a thin sheet (about 1/2 inch), place in fridge. Once it's set, cut the jello in strips and layer over your skull, leaving the eyes and mouth uncovered. The jello gives a "fleshy" appearance and is really tasty with sliced deli ham. It's optional, but I like the effect. Next, cover the jello with several layers of sliced deli ham, then use two hard-boiled egg yolks with sliced olives for eyes. Place on a platter of lettuce with rolls, cheese, and condiments....viola...Meathead!!

The guests get to eat down to the bone....yummm!

I made the kitty litter for daughter's grade 8 Hallowe'en party. None of the kids would eat it! When daughter brought it back home, hubby went to all the neighbours who eagerly tried it and liked it. I didn't want to be stuck with it, although it is good!

Here's some more:

Bride of Frankenstein Cake

You Will Need:
your favorite cake recipe
loaf pan
your favorite frosting recipe
cake decorating bags and tips
food colors
2 black spice drops
Make and bake your favorite cake recipe using a Loaf Pan (bread pan or meatloaf pan) and let cool.
Remove cake from pan and place on cake board or cardboard covered in foil. Using a spatula, ice 6 inches of top and side of cake smooth with lime green icing.
Pipe tip 12 ball eyeballs, tip 8 ball nose and tip 3 string mouth and eyebrows. Pipe tip 3 green eyelids; edge with tip 3 black outline. Pipe tip 3 dot pupils.
Cut 1 inch pieces of licorice and insert into eyeballs for lashes. Pipe tip 10 curved outline ears; overpipe with tip 10.
Attach black spice drops to sides of neck and wafers to cheeks with dots of icing.
For hair, fit two decorating bags with tip 4B. Fill one bag with white icing and the other with gray. Begin at bottom border on cake side and pipe tip 4B wavy hair. Continue over the cake. On top edge of cake, pipe tip 4B pull-out stars.

Eyetini

per eyeball: 1 radish, 1 pimiento stuffed green olive

per drink: 1 shot gin or vodka, 1/4 shot dry vermouth (more or less to taste)

Prepare ice "eyeballs" at least a day before your plan to use them. Peel radishes, leaving thin streaks of red skin on to represent blood vessels. Using the tip of the vegetable peeler or a small, knife, carefully scoop out a small hole in each radish, roughly the size of an olive. Stuff a green olive, pimiento side out, in each hole. Place 1 radish eyeball in each section of an empty ice cube tray. Pare the radishes down a bit to fit, if necessarry. Fill the tray with water and freeze overnight.
To make drink, fill a tall cocktail glass with 3-4 eyeball ice cubes, add ingredients in the order given. Shake or stir, as is your preference.

Strained Eyeballs

6 hard boiled eggs
6 oz Whipped cream cheese
7 oz Green olives -- with pimientos
Red food coloring

Peel eggs cut in half lengthwise. Remove the discard yolks. Fill the holes with cream cheese. Press an olive into each cream cheese eyeball, pimiento facing up, for an eerie green iris and startling red pupil! For a final touch, dip the tip of a toothpick in red food coloring and draw broken blood vessels in the cream cheese.

I will be making these too for the kids. We have a big bash every year - kids and grownups - haunted treasure hunt (0r basement room - if the weather doesn't cooperate). Last year, I got a fog machine, and this year I've already gotten a strobe light.

I've made the finger cookies, and last year I made Sol's meringue bones, which were very cool.

Here's what I made the last few years. A good fella's pizza. Everything's edible. The nose, ears and fingers were modeled of marzipan. The eyes were make of fondant. And then, there were the creepy old bones...

I LOVE this! Keep em' coming! I made a "Jello Brain" last yeat too; you can buy the jello mold at most party stores prior to Halloween.

Last year for my DD Girl Scout troop I made each of them candy melted witch(sorry no pics). I got the idea from a Halloween magazine at the check out line. In the photo they used pudding cups that were swirled chocolate and vanilla that was dyed green. I had 25 girls and i didnt have enough cups for everyone. So instead i melted milk chocolate and vanilla chips dyed green and swirled them together to make little pools. I used Bugles(corn chips) for the hats that stuck out and a prezel stick for the broom. Then take green fruit roll ups and wrap that around the broom. You have a melted witch. I could kick myself for not taking any pictures. They were a huge hit!

Realistic Looking Fake Blood

1 3/4 C corn syrup
1/4 C water
2 tsp. liquid red food coloring
8-10 drops liquid blue food coloring
1/4 C sifted corn starch

Mix corn syrup and water, add food colorings, put in a shaker container with lid, cover and shake to mix. Add the sifted cornstrach and shake well again. If any lumps remain, let the bottle site for a few seconds, they will rise to the top and you can skim them off. Store in the refrigerator, don't make too far in advance as this only keeps for a couple of days.

The meathead is very disturbing...of course my husband loves it. I think we'll be making one this year. I've done the "lady fingers" and they're very cool & creepy looking. You can make them as breadsticks rather than cookies (might be a nice side dish for the meathead).

OK, I love those meringue bones! Do you just pipe meringue into bone shapes? I also love those mummy hot dogs.

My husband had done the brain mold but with a twist. Fill it most of the way & let it set. Scoop some out of the center & fill with fake blood ala msafirstein's recipe. Replace with some of the scooped out jello to seal the hole, then fill the rest of the way with liquid jello & cool until set.

This way your jello brain will "bleed" when it's cut.

Sigh, here's the recipe and technique. Btw, sometimes I dust the bones with cocoa.

Meringue Bones

4 large egg whites
Â¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup granulated sugar
Â½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 200Â°F. Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until mixture gets frothy. Gradually start adding the sugar. Beat for a couple of minutes after each addition. Once it forms stiff peaks, add the vanilla and beat another 2-3 minutes.

Immediately put meringue in a large pastry bag, and using a large round tip* start piping them onto parchment-covered baking sheets. Bake for 2 hours. Turn off oven and leave meringues to dry out 1 hour longer. Store these in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Do not refrigerate.

*I never use a decorating tip; the opening of the pastry bag is just the size I like for these.
Another hint. Before you start piping, dab a tiny dot of meringue on your cookie sheet before you lay the parchment on it, to keep it in place while you work.

Sol, thank you! I've been having some bad luck with stiffening up egg whites so maybe your bones will "break" that streak (sorry).

Forgot to mention that I was at an animal rescue/adoption expo this weekend and one of the cat rescues had made the litterbox cake. Oh it was incredible...everyone was doing double takes. I just couldn't bring myself to try it even though theirs was in a foil pan, not a litterbox. But they had even colored some of the cake crumbs green which really gave it that "fresh step" look.

I've been to a party or two that featured the kitty litter cake. Saving these recipes for a future Halloween party...maybe next year. I'm loving the bleeding brain idea.....just have to buy the mold.

Terri, there are a couple different variations on the internet, some with ref. breadsticks - some crescent rolls. This is the one that originally caught my eye, but I don't think I can get Rhodes rolls around here. Will probably use a tube of dinner rolls rolled out.

Yummy Mummy Dogs
Category: Main Dishes

Ingredients:
RhodesÂ Dinner Rolls, thawed but still cold
bun length hot dogs
mustard

Instructions:
For each Mummy Dog, cut one dinner roll in half. Roll each half into a 22-24-inch rope. Wrap one rope around hot dog from bottom up 4 1/2 inches. Cut a 1 1/2 inch piece off of the second rope and set aside. Wrap the second rope around the hot dog from the bottom up 4 1/2 inches going the opposite way. Wrap the 1 1/2 inch piece around the top of the hot dog. Place Mummy Dogs on a sprayed baking sheet and bake at 350Â°F 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven, cool slightly and add mustard eyes. Serve warm with ketchup and mustard.

You realize this thread is prompting me to have a halloween party?

My husband and I were discussing this on the way home last night & he was wishing that we could get our hands on some of those bottles that they used in M*A*S*H when Hawkeye & Pierce would serve their rotgut. I asked if he meant those bottles that looked like what .375s of Absolut Vodka came in? Place a wrapper with a red cross on it, get a cork, some surgical tubing et voila! Instant rotgut server...or just fill with "blood" for added ambiance. (or grenadine, for garnishing special cocktails).

Smoking Cow Pies

1 lb bulk Hot Italian Sausage
Regular size package of Velveeta cheese, cut in cubes
Small deli rye bread

Brown sausage, drain, add cheese cut up in cubes. Cook over low heat until cheese has melted and everything is combined.
Spoon mixture on rye bread rounds and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes.

well, I am in the midst of a break from making my eyetini eyeballs....what a pain!

Now don't get me wrong. I think they'll be a huge hit, Sat night - and since Scott likes martini's - it was a no brainer - to make them. But I'll say it again...what a pain - lol.

I have six done - will go out and do the other six - if I can find the right size radishes - before I go pick will up from school.

It's a great thing I can do before hand.

I'm also doing the meathead - I got the "meat" today - and I am doing a jello brain. Also Sherry's spinach brownies - which aren't gross at all, the mummy dogs for the kids, cupcakes for the kids to decorate, and a crockpot full of Woodie's Mexican Chicken Corn Chowder. Oh and some nice thick gooey brownies.

my neighbor will no doubt be bringing a bunch of good stuff.

"starting" to get excited!

There will be over 20 children here - I got streamers and am making "sashes" with winning categories on them. I will make way more than we need - and each child will win a "category". Cutest, Spookiest, Silliest, Most colorful, etc. after a costume "parade".

Since the weather looks carpy, we have to find more ways to entertain "inside"...sigh. Next year I may have my Halloween party in August. :-)
