I'm Halloweening . . . Buffet First!!!

It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but I seem to be very caught up with decorating for Halloween this year! Between you enablers here and my sweet 16 y/o DD, I've had my decs spread out all over the guest room for over a week now. I finally decided to put them out so that I have my work table in there cleared to paint and sew on.

This year I've decided to stick with decorating just the dining room, living room and foyer since we'll have to live with them until November 1st (LOL!).

First is my buffet area in the dining room. I haven't finished the table area yet, so I'll show you that later.

I didn't have anything else (yet) for a table runner, so I'm using an old, hand-embroidered tablecloth my mother gave to me. I'm not crazy about red & black together (in my house, not yours), but I thought this might work for Halloween, as it's already yellowed with age.

My Spanish Colonial art does NOT work well with Halloween, so, I've covered most of it for the month. Here, I've hung a sign from the DG ($1) over this painting.

I've also cobwebbed up the area ;^D

Poor Nevermore got the boot from his cage when his bodybuilder brother, Ah-nowld, arrived on the scene. I gave him a glitter bath before caging him, which really put him in the holiday mood.

I also gave him red eyes. They're supposed to glow in the dark, but don't as yet. What a profile, though!

I decorated the candle with window clings from DG ($1 for a big sheet of them) and a little spray adhesive.

I'd cage big ol' "Ah-nowld" too. That's one wicked looking bird. LOL. Neat how you glittered him and did his eyes in glow red. 'Nevermore' is probably hiding from him, you know how brothers can pick on each other!

Love all the cobwebs, and the way you disguised your normal art work is perfect. Way to go!!

Yes, the Enablers here drag us into buying and decorating in ways we never have before. LOL I am going to do some cobwebs this year for the first time, have been really liking that look. I'm only doing a real small area for Halloween tho. My family-room mantel, the built-in shelves to left of it, and the small round table under them. Otherwise, just leaving up my Fall decor. And I am going to confine my Halloween decor pretty much to witch stuff. They are my favorites, and frankly, I just don't need to go overboard buying MORE holiday items to try and store. I've gone so nuts over Fall as it is, and Christmas of course, that somewhere in my life I need a little self-control. LOL.

Your buffet is wonderful and has me inspired to get out my stuff this weekend.

lynn...that is quite a SCARY vignette! Ewwwwwwwwwww! Those cobwebs......ewwwwwwwwwww (I have enough of the real ones, thank U very much! LOL!) I can see why DD would love the influence she is having on your decor for Halloween! What fun!!!

Ok, my fav is the Poe story with the black rose ...how fitting! Great idea! And your beautiful metal bowl has certainly turned into Halloween decor with those lime green marbles in the bottom & silhoutte-ing that candle...good work! TFS your fun decor ...& covering your framed art with that color green sure ties in with your metal bowl display. Jeanne S.

Well here I am at almost 3:30 in the AM...having one of my not so good nights..and I think..let me see if anything's new on Holiday...and there YOU are - with 2 new posts! You're having way too much fun with your new buffet, changing your decorations every couple of hrs!! LOL There are so many things to look at! I wouldn't have put that spiderweb rug on the floor either...better as a mat and I'm sure DD will agree when she sees how you used it. I love those spiderweb candleholders and the witch hat tucked in there by the cute Haunted House. I see your 'retro witch' - I always liked how you painted her. Cute scarecrows too..but 'THE STANDOUT' piece are those PURPLE BOOTS...just wait till Karen sees those! They really command attention! Too bad your DGD didn't come over to 'play' with you..she would just had a ball with all your fun things! As far as you doing some decorating outside tomorrow...my decorations are 'Buried In Snow'! ugg We were hit with a doozie of a snow storm..never before so much this early in the season. I hope this is not what we will be in for again, this Winter. I see your candy is ready and waiting..I hope we get some TOTs here...usually all the kids go to the school at night for a 'Trick or Trunk'. They have a parade...then trick or treat from everyone's decorated car trunk! Never saw that before...but they feel it's safer for the kids that way...especially since it so rural here. Hi Kmttsmom, Thank you for being kind. I'm really not trying to get a reaction or hurt anyone and I think I've stated it over and over, but it bears repeating. :) I'm hurt too, and confused at how my estrangement got to the point it did. Years and years of misunderstanding, letting things go when they really should have been talked out then, not feeling like I could say anything because it would be taken the wrong way. So I'm just trying to understand it from a mother's point of view. And it seems like a lot of mothers are defensive (that's ok, they have a right to be, but then they take it as I'm attacking) and words like "spoiled brat" come into the picture. I'm not, nor was I ever, a spoiled brat. I was raised one of the least spoiled people you would ever meet. No electricity, no television, catchment water, no neighbors. No Christmas tree, very few presents for my birthday. My mother never bought me a car, paid for insurance, college, rent, bills, etc. I had to give away my toys to more needy kids time and again. We recycled everything. I moved out at 14 to live with my dad because of her emotional abuse, and I lived pretty much on my own because he had to work 150 miles away and would be gone for days at a time. I walked to school a few miles away and walked home, did my homework, made myself dinner, and went to bed. And I forgave her in high school. I was able to put it all behind me and move forward. And I included her in my daughter's birth. And when she needed a place to live, I let her move in with me. And then I realized she was an energy vampire. She literally sucked me dry, blamed me for everything, took my friends and started to turn my daughter against me. And she walked all over me. Time and again. So, my defenses go up too, when mothers just say that kids just need to respect their parents, and "get over it". It's a very emotionally charged situation. I didn't come on here for support, I came on here to learn what others think. So I think part of the conflict is our approach to what we expect from this board. I'm shocked at being told to go away, that my opinion is not wanted or needed or valued because I don't agree and I'm asking questions. It seems it's either one way or the highway. And when I apply this to what women here are saying about their damaged relationships the correlation seems too blatant to ignore. I don't think anyone here is a "Bad Mother". The fact that people are even talking about it indicates that they are truly trying to be good people. I'm sure everyone on here has their good and bad moments, and it can be hard to judge emotion when it's in writing, without any facial gestures or other non-verbal clues. I guess this isn't the place for me to be asking my questions because it is seen as an attack, and I felt just terrible the past few days, because I feel bad that people are taking my words that way, and now I feel attacked too. Glad you posted about yourself. Nice to get to know you better. We did this last year too when we had a bunch of newbies, but they all kinda left us after the holidays. ha Hope you stick with us. For myself, I am a self taught painter. My first painting project was a little pumpkin done at a little church craft day and I was hooked. It's hard to find time to paint even though I love it. I am a SAHM of 4 kids ranging from 4-14. My DH works long hours so it's left to me to pick up the slack. Plus I have my retired parents living with me who are not always in the best of health that I am taking care of. It's a struggle to find time to do the things that I love. Family history is my other big love and it takes lots of research time. I paint for myself and to give as gifts. Never done craft shows or anything like that, although I have had a few offers from people wanting to buy my stuff. It's my relaxation so wouldn't want to put pressure on myself and ruin it. I'm a total thrift store junkie and love to find things there to paint and repurpose. Lots of fun different surfaces for way cheap. Luvs finally talked me into using my saw this year and I love cutting out my own pieces. My blade broke and I haven't gotten DH to help me replace it yet, but I need to do that before it gets too cold out. We are so glad you've found us and hope you'll stick around and paint with us for a long time. I'm glad your arthritis isn't stopping you there. I've really enjoyed your projects. It's been fun getting to know Luvs and Bebe who I consider "the regulars" and hope to get to know you better too. Stop by and chat and with Luvs and I here. We are usually here at least a couple of times a week. =) I think the others forget about the conversations side. We kinda have a running dialog going so just jump in anytime. ~Anj

My Halloween Decs (Lots of Pics)

Just an old jar, filled with a Dollar Store eyeball candies and decorated with a sticker makes a nice Halloween dec, I think. I made my little ghost many, many years ago : I painted my witch at the same time, and also the scarecrow below in another pic: Light in our entrance foyer: Hutch in there with more books: My cousin's book, "Boo, Bunny!" always has a place of honor there. These Halloween farolitos are easy to make with an empty gallon milk jug. Leave the handle on it and, after decorating as a monster, scary face, a cat or whatever, fill with 2-3 inches of sand and insert a votive candle. Halloween "Ghost Eye" Tree centerpiece made by DD when she was younger: My favorite cat sits on top of our wine cab: Spook up any lamp with a bit of black cheese cloth that the Dollar Stores always seem to carry at this time of year. Draped around the top are just a couple DS necklaces. A nice, big spider is a fun addition. A Halloween quilt and wall hangings, all made for us by my very talented bestfriend, Dianna: Dining Room table centerpiece, which sits down at the end of the table during our meals: Thanks for letting me play here today, showing you my favorite Halloween decs. Thanks, Karen! If you have a Dollar General store nearby, their cobweb/spiderweb packages are just $1 each. One package goes a long way. All that I've show in my three threads here today was just half of one package. I know what you mean about exercising some control and not buying too much. I'm now waiting for Target to put their orange Halloween totes on sale, as I need another for just the new things I've gotten this year!
Jeanne: I hadn't even noticed that the sign and green marbles echoed each other; thanks for pointing that out to me! Glad you liked the book and rose; it was one of those last minute ideas.

Oh, man! Each element is so cool. I like how you covered the original art work with the witch way sign. The ornate frame looks like it belongs in a haunted house vignette.

Great use of the antique book. Nice that you can include special items as well as new Dollar Store things.

Ah-nowld is one tough bird! Don't let me out.

The first thing that caught my eye was your "muscle bound" bird in the cage. Love the name you gave him--so perfect! LOL The sign fit really well over your picture, I'm sure you saw the one like it that I bought in black/white. Don't you just love that we can find neat stuff at those dollar store prices? As I said before, you have opened up a whole new range of ideas for me with the way you used the window clings--and they always have them for nearly every holiday. Really fun and fantastic decorating, Lynn, I love it! Luvs

Lynn, I don't think we have Dollar General here. I'll have to check. Dollar Tree and the 99 Cent store are the close ones to me.
I went to Dollar Tree today to get some webbing and ravens.
I couldn't find any ravens tho. I was so disappointed. I asked the manager if they'd sold out of them already and he said apparently. He looked thru the shelves, and way in the back of one was a little raven..the kind with wings out flying. He was missing a leg. I told the manager someone had already played a trick on the poor guy!
I brought him home anyway, we'll work out the missing leg.
Maybe one of my witches can help. LOL.

By the way MZ LYNN...while you are 'blaming' the Enablers here and your DD for your newfound Halloween decor explosion, I am going to have to blame YOU! Especially after your fireplace post and pictures. You got me hooked and reeled in with that one! I can hear my resolve to not buy a lot disolving and going down the drain!!

Oh I can see 'The Kid' has come out in you this Halloween Lynn...love all that you did.
Clever idea to cover your art with a Halloween Sign...it looks so good. I love 'Ah-Nowld'...lol he's a real character and looks perfect in that cage..all red eyed and glittered up! You chose the perfect Book (Poe is one of my Favorites) I read his entire collecton of Short Stories, at age 11! Love the Black Rose for a 'Special Touch'.

I can see why DD felt she had to claim her territory for decorating...She's got 'Momma'... to compete with !! lol
