Laurel hedge suddenly dying

In the last three weeks, the large laurel hedge on my property is showing yellow and brown spots, followed by leaves turning brown and dying. There may have been signs of trouble before that, but it was raining like crazy here and I didn't get out for my property tours. I'm including a picture of some affected leaves. Any idea what this might be and how to save the hedge? It looks like more than half of the leaves are affected.

Looks like some kind of fungal blight or could be damage from some sort of spray.

Have you used any chemicals on your yard?

No, haven't used any chemicals since I moved in last September. I got a letter from the previous owner that they also gardened organically.

really help to know where you are ... have a soil test done ... before you go presuming the soil is lacking something ... its really better than guessing ... contact your county extension office for how to do that ... or the high end nursery can tell you ... yellowing in winter .... hmm ... all kinds of things can be the cause... i wouldnt do much of anything.. until i saw how the new growth turns out in spring ... speaking of which.. where are you ... and how have the last 3 seasons been ... drought in summer.. early hard frosts or freezes .. and what about winter ... ?????? basically ... all you have given us.. is color ... and that isnt much to guess on .. ken

Privet Hedge Dying Off ?

Hello wisconsitom – Thank you for your response. Here are some additional details… I’m located in Zone 7, Long Island NY. This privet hedge is approximately 2.5 years old and had been healthy (at least in appearance) in the beginning of the Spring. They were purchased from a very good nursery and I believe they were in burlap as opposed to pots but I’m not certain anymore as I had both. I trim them on a regular basis and I believe that I have trimmed the hedge twice this year. This property had been neglected for many years and this entire area had been dead trees, brush, and invasive vines like English Ivy and other species whose names escape me. I cleared the property approximately three years ago and planted a perimeter of various shrubs …I have several sections of Privet around the property. This particular section looked very healthy and full, I have been keeping it low and trimming in a pear shaped formation to make certain the bottom gets sun and stays green. The soil is very fertile, it has excellent drainage and gets a good amount of sun each day. Our spring has been pretty good, I usually supplement water if there is any dry spells. There is no grass within 10 feet of this hedge … I have put down both a pre-emergent and broadleaf control, but not in close proximity. I use arborists wood chips as mulch, but I have not recently mulched this area – this is where I get concerned about the Honey Fungus. The thinning of the leaves was very sudden and I’m concerned whatever is causing it might spread … Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

In organized tests where trees were cut back at planting time the control plants that weren't pruned at planting time had larger overall volumes when all were measured later. Vigorous shoots produced in reaction to heading cuts create the false impression of increased whole plant vigor and faster total plant size increase by growing rapidly themselves. Where the tendency for woody plants to try and replace amputated parts quickly can be useful is when we want to "renew" all or part of (usually) a shrub that has become twiggier than is desired. Cutting down all of a spirea for instance that has become trashy looking doesn't make it healthier or faster growing, it just takes away all the ugly old branches and results in them being replaced with new ones.

Thanks, we're in the PNW and are waiting to hear from the Ext. office. We've tried fertilizer the past 2 years and nothing seems to help. The lawn is another story. We changed gardeners last winter since the previous guy let the yard go downhill. It's slowly recovering but all the invading pasture grasses add another dimension to it. :)

that looks like a cherry laurel... is it? I have a cherry laurel and when i first got it, i did a little research on laurels. there are some fungal problems that can afflict it. a quick search yields the following, quote:

Problems: Cherry laurel is more disease- and insect-resistant than other Prunus species, but root rot can be a problem if the shrub is planted in a wet location. A fungal disease called "shot hole," produces purple to reddish leaf spots. The spots drop out, leaving circular holes in the leaf. Mild, wet summer weather promotes this leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering. The fungus botryosphaeria causes limb dieback.

my laurel suffered from shot hole this spring and just looks disgusting now. lots of leaf drop and leaves full of holes. dunno what to tell you... maybe spray an anti-fungal and hope the spring growth will cover up the damage.

kitova, I think it is shot hole fungus, having looked at pictures of it after a web search. It's too bad there's no organic solution save removing the affected leaves, cleaning up under the plant and avoiding overhead watering. I can avoid doing it myself, but I do live in Seattle! Thanks for the ID!

you're welcome! good luck with your laurels. if you can, i'd really appreciate a follow up after you've treated your plant. tell me what works for you.. my laurel looks pretty bad right now and not quite sure what to do about it myself..
