What is happening to my mountain laurel?
Comments (5)Hi. Thanks for your feedback folks. Yikes! I was afraid of root rot. I planted on a slope so I thought drainage would not be an issue. I stuck a pencil in the soil and it did not seem soggy. I did heavily mulch earlier this spring however and I wonder if I put it too close. (New at this). Anyhow, I've since cleared all the mulch away from the plant and cut back all the dead stuff. (I've actually had to cut back more since the photo). Is the shrub beyond hope? Are there any commercial fungicides anyone recommends? Thanks again!...See Morewhat is killing my laurel otto
Comments (2)Could be a number of things. Here are several possibilities: 1) stress from not enough water over the summer. Is it in full sun? 2) Scale -- look for a coating of white scale on the inner branches. 3) stress from planting or transplanting. Has it been recently planted? 4) stressed and vulnerable from the cold winter. You don't say where you live. ...and I suppose there's a chance it could be Phytophthora, a fungus-like pathogen, or some other disease. Comments (8)We had a hard winter and the deer attacked my Laurel hedge. They devoured all the leaves off the lower branches and there are only leaves on the top where they were unable to reach. I don't know what to do to help leaves grow again on the lower branches. I was told by someone to cut them all the way down to the base and start over. Spring has just sprung in my area and they look awful. I planted them to screen from our neighbors but they are just plain ugly and I feel horrible because it took 6 years and they looked so good last summer. Comments (10)You didn't say how high your hedge needs to be. Are deer a problem? How's the drainage? No for Prunus caroliniana. It is a tree and can get damaged in winter. But there may be other Prunus such as Skip laurel, provided they get enough moisture. It can get 8 to 15 feet. Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken' works for many years. Doesn't get much over 4 or 5 feet. But can eventually get white scale and die out. Euonymus is great provided your area is fenced from deer. Golden euonymus, Silver King euonymus, etc. Wax myrtle may work, but can defoliate in really cold winters. Also, snow loads can break them up, which is discouraging, but deer don't like them. You might consider Viburnum pragense. It's a bit course, but with shaping looks fairly good. Takes regular maintenance. Stays evergreen. It's tough and deer don't care for it. Leaves droop in coldest weather. Then there are all the hollies, such as I cornuta 'Burford', 'Needlepoint', 'Carissa', I. cornuta Rotundifolia, Ilex crenata and all it's cultivars, the Blue hollies and all their cultivars....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
