This is a great article, but I have a 36” sideyard with a walkway in it and that is a very tight space, but I would still like to grow something. I am in 8-9 zone, by the beach in So. Calif, Any suggestions for that?

Buxus Fastigiata - more elegant form than sky pencil with a tighter habit - grows to 9’ by 3’ wide. If you want a tree form you can get California Photinia Red Robin as a single trunk and raise the canapy giving you the height you may need and it’s an evergreen check if ok for your zone!
