Which New Roses Are You Most Looking Forward To?
Comments (50)I'm excited about a lot of roses this Spring: I'm finally allowing myself to acquire Lady Hillingon...we'll see if there is enough heat for her here. Even if it's a failure, I'm going to try. Jenny Duval: I don't care if she has a terrible reputation for suckering- the color of the flowers is worth it, and maybe my clay soil will slow her down a little. I can't wait to see what my band of Gruss an Coburg does: it's putting out all kinds of new growth! In October, I rescued two beat up and abandoned 5-gallon pots of 'New Zealand'. The color and scent are lovely, and I think it's the kind of "Modern" hybrid tea that should make some people think twice about "no moderns" snobbery. I'm also VERY excited to see the Spring behavior of the 5-gallon plant of Zephirine Drouhin which I was given to me last summer. I've never grown her before, and I've read a lot of complaints about stingy re-bloom, but mine had flowers on it all through August, September and October. Basically, I'm just excited about all roses, all year long....See MoreWhat Are You Most Thankful For? And Which Four Roses, Too.
Comments (30)I am thankful for the fact that I have lasted at work as long as I have. I could now retire if my job were to be abolished, again. I'm not quite old enough for a full retirement, but I am eligible for an early one. I am also thankful for the few friends that I have and the few family members that are still living. I don't live close to any of them, but there is always the phone and e-mail. I am also thankful for all-wheel drive in the winter. A well-designed system works delightfully on my hilly street in the snow and ice. My four roses, if I have to limit it to that and not in any particular order, are: (1) Fisher Holmes (2) Lilli Marleen (3) Seashell (4) Kordes' Brilliant...See MoreWhich fall purchases are you most excited about?
Comments (31)I have to say that I am very excited about my very newest purchase tonight. Phil Korth sends his newsletter to those of us that have bought before and people on his waiting list. It previewed his 2009 collection before he puts it up on his website. There are 12 intros for 2009. I bought the entire 2009 collection. As many of you know from my posting of pictures of the Korth intros already growing here, I love his intros. The 2009 collection is really stunning with some really interesting ones but my favorite, at least from pictures, is a wonderful looking very hard to describe thing called ROCKS CRY OUT. Then there is a very toothy one called CAST YOUR CROWN. And more, they are all great. I bought that 2007 collection of his but padsed on the 2008 collection because he had too many weird shapped ones included. Maybe not quite spiders but UFOs that were not to my taste so I skipped 2008. Now I want to go back and pick up afew of my favorite 2008 ones to get in the spring along with my collection. To anyone who wondered what I had planned to put in my new daylily beds in the front yard next year, I had said I had something in mind. This is a good part of what I had in mind....See MoreWhat room/space are you most excited about?
Comments (19)Gosh, it is hard to pick. It really depends on the day. I've ALWAYS wanted a library and I'm tickled with the quirky, odd-shaped room with built-in bookshelves and cabinets and a generous window seat that we are building. Of course, it has French doors with glass panes. And I'm delighted with the master bathroom, where we each have our own entrance off the bedroom, each have our own vanity and toilet and walk-in closet, and our own entrance to the shared shower between our spaces. After two decades of sharing a vanity, I'm looking forward to the morning when I reach for my hairbrush and isn't wet from his shaving nearby. And he looks forward to not having to worry about the position of the toilet sheet at night. But I think what I am most excited about today is the functional, multipurpose mud room. It leads to the shortest path between our house and barn and is a large triangle that connects the house (off the kitchen/great room) to the garage. One wall has the washer, dryer, cat genie and laundry sink, generous counter top space and cabinets. The opposite wall has mudroom cubbies, hooks, and bench seat, plus a small broom closet and a large coat and boot closet. And the third wall has large windows looking onto our horse pastures with desk/printer/filing and paperwork/mail area. It's a really functional, utilitarian room that should work as a drop zone for a lot of the mess and transition between barn life and home life. Oh, and there is window in the fourth (very short wall) letting us see out to our pasture on the other side of the house. The mud room is about 400 sq ft and I think it's going to be really livable and practical....See MoreArbutusOmnedo 10/24
