Don Draper’s Watch
Asking: $4,700
Last we checked, 43 people had bid on this watch, pushing the price up to $4,600. It could go higher; the auction ends at different times for different items. Some lots will be sold by June 13, others June 15.
Show creator Matthew Weiner was obsessed with historical accuracy, and the vast majority of Mad Men props are vintage pieces, sourced by the show’s props master, Ellen Freund, who also curated this auction. Everything for sale was used on set. Screenbid.com, the company running the auction, has provided stills from the show to accompany some of the lots, though for others you’ll need to search for the scene in which a prop appeared.
Money from the sale goes back to Lionsgate, the production company for Mad Men. These auctions can be moneymakers: Screenbid previously auctioned off character Don Draper’s typewriter for $9,000. His Social Security card went for $3,800. Dozens of the props for sale this year were featured last year in the Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men exhibition at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, in New York City, as well as at Modernism Week 2016 in Palm Springs.
Here are a few more Mad Men items up for bid.
