Which fall purchases are you most excited about?

I spent the weekend planning and planting... for not intending to make any purchases at all this year, I was surprised to find myself with over 50 new kids. I didn't get very many fancy ones as I was doing more of a landscape planting and had to stick with things that were on sale, but there are a few that I am very excited about:

Inner Vision, Walking With Bill (to be planted at Mom's, but I still get to enjoy), and Something Angelic have been on my list for a long time, and are coming this fall. I also ordered some of Paul Owen's seedlings, and I am really excited about them as well.

Which plants on your fall orders are you most excited about?

Would love to hear what pretties people have coming.

Since this is my first year with DLs, I am excited about all of them :o) Some of them make me really thrilled though:

'Berry Cheesecake' (bonus for my order from Maryott's)
'How Beautiful Heaven Must Be' (bonus for my order from Maryott's)
'Pandora's Treasure' (bonus for my order from Maryott's)
'Answering Angels' (order from Maryott's)

Last two varieties are from unknown Internet seller. I hope they will be healthy and true to name...

I have not received a couple of my orders yet, so I might have some bonus plants that I will be excited about :)

Since I'm trying to get rid of a few hundred before I add any more, I only purchased a couple -- LABYRINTH OF SOLITUDE, NO MORE TEARS and PEPPERMINT PINWHEEL (the last one sent to replace a mislabeled plant from Spring).

Of course, that doesn't count the ones received from my very own personal Daylily Fairy, who sent me NANCY BILLINGSLEA (among others). Thanks, Katie!

Thanks for the link, ArthurM... very good reading! And thank you for sharing your orchid photos! I really like the Neofinitea falcata... the flowers are so delicate-looking and the white does look really nice against the darker green of the leaves! Thanks to all who shared photos! Lovely flowers! I only wish I could grow such beauties... my apartment is just not a very orchid-friendly environment... which is why I'm thrilled my Epidendrum is doing so well!

I have planted shrubs in the middle of summer here for the past 3 years. I do have to watch and water them alot. I would prefer to get them all planted early spring but it just isn't possible. I also have bought stuff in the middle of summer so I am planting in the middle of summer. I had to mow today (yeck! still not done) so no planting today but have moved the two rhodies up to the top of the planting list. I should get them done tomorrow and the roses will wait. The rhodies still to plant are 'Purple Gem' and one of the two 'Silver Pink' I bought at Home Depot. The four 'Olga Mezitt' rhodies were planted in a day or two after buying. I had bought more Azaleas and three Blue Princess Holly also all the same time, also from Home Depot earlier this spring and they are all planted also. So is my Abelia. So are the 5 Blueberry Shrubs I added this spring and my Spirea 'Neon Flash'. Besides the roses and rhodos I have 4 really small skip laurels I got at Home Depot marked $3.33 apiece, another Cotoneaster, my 'Cameo' Flowering quince, a Pyracantha, some un identified really tiny viburnum (again bought at Home Depot much earlier this spring) and three Purple Coneflowers 'Ruby Star' still to plant. This is assuming I don't BUY anything else ha ha!

TriangleJohn, Yes, I saw the same report on tomato growing. There are several other ideas kicking around. This summer I plan to try one. Plant two tomatoes in the same hole and then lightly secure the two base stems together so they will graft onto each other. Probably I will use regular florist tape for this purpose as it is lightweight and stretches plus being easy to remove without harming plants. This method is supposed to increase fruit production, also. Maybe others will try our ideas and provide us with their observations. Surfactants (wetting agents) seem to be very misunderstood by many here on GW. All contain soap with yucca extract having its own natural form of soap (saponin). But I shudder when someone states that any detergent can be used as a surfactant. Not true as many detergents contain degreasers and/or anti bacterial agents, both of which will kill plants. My suggestion, for tender leafed plants is to use either yucca extract, baby shampoo or Nitron A-35 as wetting agents. Yes, John, surfactants should be used once a month, especially on clay soils. Surfactants not only help soils to 'open up' and drain they also help plants to absorb fertilizers. You should be able to reduce your fertilizer needs by one half using a surfactant on a regular basis. Try the following on your indoor plants...everytime you water add 1 teaspoon of a surfactant to a gallon of water along with whatever fertilizers you use. In a few months you should note a difference in plant growth. By the way, John, this is how you win blue ribbons at State fairs. As I said above, Simple Green, applied once a month, appears to be an excellent surfactant for clay soils. Give it a try.

I must agree with berrytea4me about hybridizers being very secret about what they do. I was involved with orchids before coming to other genera hybrizing. With orchid, there are almost no secret from anyone, everything or almost is known, published and even publicized. Every hybrid ever created is cataloged and you can find out what the parents are for any hybrid. If you want to know what the dominant and recessive caracteristics are for almost any good known parent, this information is readily available and updated as it is used, and this proves to be very helpful to everybody. The majority of hybridizers will share their knowledge, and in doing so, they don't loose anything while everybody is gaining something. This is a great help while trying to create new hybrids and can keep hybridizers from repeating the mistakes that were made by someone else. It also helps to make big steps forward in hybridizing orchids and in creating new genera of orchids. This is not the case with daylilies, irises, hippeastrums, peonies, echinaceas, etc. I find that most good information is either kept very secret and just plainly not available at all. For instance, there is almost no way to know what the parents are for most hippeastrum, even for most primary hybrids. It is a secret, and don't ask for more. That's too bad since I believe that such an attitude slows down anyone from stepping forward faster if not keeping them from moving at all. When you share what you know, you don't loose your knowledge in doing so, and you always have to know more than what you share to be able to share anything, so you are never empty of anything, you are always left with more than what you have given. I've planted most in the last two days and unlike Katie, I've got lots more room to add more but not till next year. Our first frost somes in mid to late October so need at least 4 to 6 weeks for the dls to adjust before the frost hits. Watch, it will be one of those years when frost doesn't come till November. LOL

I generally don't add daylilies in the fall. I have two coming as part of a trade: Yukon Spring and Enduring Freedom. I think both are very exciting. I have a fall order that my mother-inlaw will be overwintering: Moonlight Sail, and I have my first order for spring: Gentleman's Lady. I think that all four will be top notch additions to my garden.

Excited about my order from Coral Kincaid at NSdaylilies for spring 2009 delivery. I chose Buzz Saw, Joyful Soul, Julie Newmar, Moon Jazz and Saber Tooth Tiger. For fall 2008 I'm really excited about four Munsons, Apricot Wax, Clemenceaux, Serene Serenade, Saroya and a Mason, Bordello Queen. I just planted Celtic Braid,Orange Tremor along with Finged Blessings, Mango Madness and Peach Strudel. I'm always happy when I have some Reckamp/Klehms as they always perform for me here...I may be getting a couple more that were on my wish list...will know next month....and the fun begins anew...cheers, lloyd

I haven't posyed much here this summer but I have been lurking all summer. I added Thorhalla which I got off the LA and they sent a bonus of Witch's Stick. That was great since it was on my wish list.

I have Creature Of The Night coming from a trade. And in another trade I sent someone some seeds, so they are sending me a daylily, but I don't know what one yet!! I can't wait to find out though.

To be honest, I'll be excited next spring when they bloom, right now, I'm still just busy planting. One of the small orders shipped today.

And the next shipment of labels should be here tomorrow, but I am not giving up the chart on my computer.

I suspect the daylily honoring my mother is what I have been the most excited about, but I am excited bout quite a few of them.

Wow.. what a collection of wonderful flower choices! I can't wait to see all the beautiful pictures next year!

I have a more positive attitude now that I have about half in the ground and spots set aside for the rest. And when I said over 50, I was a little conservative... I have somehow managed to order almost 100 new ones. Not many expensive, but I just can't resist the bogo and half price sales! And I have been trying to keep my mind and hands busy this fall, so the timing was good (or bad depending on how you look at it :) ) to spend time browsing daylily sites.

In all honesty, I find it just as easy to be thrilled about my less fancy new ones as it is about the ones that I have really wanted for a while.. And I have a problem with space that is different than most... if I figure out a way to get water to an area, and can manage to find the time to maintain the bed, my space is basically unlimited. I had to get water to a new section of my land this fall, and once the water is available, that opened a whole new area to landscape!

At least I will be too busy this spring weeding to order any more plants!

You have all picked some beautiful plants to add to your gardens!!! I'm not fimilar with some, so I can enjoy looking them up later.

Thanks to you Julie for starting a great thread. I will give you fair warning, don't overload yourself with new beds. I've about got to my limit, in fact, I went way over it last year. Now, I have the difficult task of downsizing. I've got to make myself because I want to start some seeds soon and of course those goregous little green heads that cause my heart to skip a beat when they first appear in my bright red cups, must be potted into bigger pots and they take up a lot of room!!! And they take a lot of water and fertilizing and trimming and mulching and did I say water!!

I only have about 100 varieties in the ground and maybe 500 pots and this is way to many for my 55 year old body to try to tend to properly. So, just try not to let the guantity bug bite too hard. It is so wonderful during peak bloom season. Rushing out to see what's new that is blooming each day is awesome. Especially if they are seedlings and this will be their first blooms!!! It's a rush like a small child gets on Christmas morning. If this ever becomes common knowledge, we may all get rich selling off our extra plants!!!

It's loads of fun and it's loads of work. Hope I haven't been too down on mass plantings for you. I just have so many weeds and grass that demands hoeing, pulling and watering is a full time job. Can you pretty much plant year round in your zone?? I'll hush up now. Have fun

I'm trying to keep the fall orders to a minimum and instead go for spring orders so that the plants have lots of time to settle in before facing one of our winters....but...stupid me, I had to go look on the LA last week. I should know better!

I have these 3 coming in a couple days and I can't decide where to put them yet.

'Little Red Dragon'- excited about the large red eye on this one.
'Watchyl Lavender Blue'- I've been wanting to add a lavender w/ large cream watermark. Love that look.
'Strawberry Patch'- To honor my Finnish grandfather who grew them commercially, I have collected strawberry motif for my kitchen since I was a little girl. Have to get just a few of the prettiest with that name for my gardens too.

Next year my garden is going to be so full of seedlings that I probably will not order anything! (so she says knowing it is impossible :))

Well I have some new ones coming from the Stamiles that I'm excited about plus a new one from Phil Reilly called Lacy Lucy. I will post pictures below. I also finally won Crazy Ivan on the LA plus Fashion Police and Wonder of it All. I have more coming but these are the ones I'm most excited about.

I usually don't order daylilies for fall planting . . . not due to the weather exactly - I just think that they grow better when planted in the spring. Just an opinion based on my observations. BUT . . . there was Rainbow's Glory on the Lily Auction and I got it at a decent price and I have been lusting after it. . . so you know, I kinda shifted some of next year's lily budget to now and am awaiting it's glorious arrival!

Im keeping my fall planting numbers down this year. I prefer to plant in the spring, but I did pick up a few that will be arriving here soon. So far I have ENTWINED IN THE VINE, BELIEVE IN MAGIC, WEAVER'S WEB, and TET. PEPPERMINT DELIGHT due to arrive before the end of the month.

I had a list all made out but decided not to post it. What's the point? I seem to have acquired about 75 daylilies! And I'd made the firm decision to stop buying for fall planting! A large order from a local AHS display garden, local club sales and auctions, one or two small auction wins, some gifts from friends....each separate occasion seemed like just a minor exception to my rule....then I added everything up. Oops.

What do I have here? Really, too much to list, but there are Hansons new and old....many, many Hansons!; VERTICAL HORIZON, a Moldovan; a lovely one by Betty Harwood; an unregistered seedling, white, with a metallic gold, glittery, toothy edge; an Emmerich to replace one I'd inadvertently left behind at our old house; a gorgeous thing by a local hybridizer out of FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN; some of Don Herr's; some of Darrel Apps's; a couple from a hybridizer I'd wanted to order from some years ago but never did (Adams)-- got them for their branching and bud count; an older Stamile that I like very much but never got around to getting before (JULIETTA)....

I could go on for paragraphs. Many, many paragraphs LOLOL.

You didn't scare me with your comments about mass planting... I have a huge garden area that I have been maintaining for several years, and I know just what I am getting myself into. The area I am doing now is an area that I have had to weed-eat to maintain in the past, and I hate that WAY more than weeding.. and it is harder on the back as well. I am finishing off the last edge of a rounded area, which has not been finished in the past due to lack of water for that section. I put in a sprinkler system that covers about 75% of my landscaped area, so that cuts down on my watering significantly. The rest is done with soaker hoses on a timer with several soakers being able to be reached by one hose. I just turn one on in the morning before I leave for work, and then move it to the next and do the same each night when I get home.

My new area is going to be done ghetto style, with a 100 foot hose running along the base of my husband's shop and then back to my new area, where I will continue the soaker method. The area that the hose will be visible will be minimal, and it will only have to be out for about 3 months of the year. I have mostly overhead water in my main DL beds, and I have a strong feeling that this inhibits seed production, so I am very excited to have a DL planting area that will not have overhead water and see if I am more successful in getting pods to set.

I can plant almost year round, but the fall is the very best as we don't have a "big" freeze that we have to worry about, and the rain that we get in late fall and early winter really establishes our perennials well.

Jan, I love your seedling, and Dot... you had better post pics of your babies next year......the pics you posted are stunning and I can't wait to see how they do for you!

I snicker each time I read that someone isn't going to buy any more this fall, spring, etc... I am there every year, and although I usually have more control that I showed this year, I always find that there is at least one or two that I can't live without!

Thanks again everyone for sharing your up and comings! I am almost as excited to see yours next year as I am to see mine!!

Coral has some excellent stuff for sale this year. I wish I had more money and more room. I added a couple to my list for my wife: Geneva Firetruck and Alicia Rose Kissed. They are nice enough but wouldn't be at the top of my list. I wish I could afford Jerry Hyatt but one $100 daylily is enough for this order.

Well, I am now a very excited camper! Again! I got the notice that the Flying Trapeze is shipping Monday along with some very nice gift plants.

I have lusted after that one from the time I first saw it!

Hi, Edward. Yes, Coral has an awesome offering. Her plants were huge last year. I grabbed Buzz Saw and Saber Tooth Tiger will "put teeth on a fence post"...I already have Heavenly Beginnings and Heavenly Pink Fang[Barrie Oickle is patienly waiting for me to share with him..:)...]..I wish I could have bought more but I'm buying from Ontario this year also...Boundless Beauty was just stunning this year..did you see Sandra's Smile on Coral's site? I saw Sandra's Smile and it is on my wish list but the price is out of reach for now. Others that caught my eye were Guns of Navarone, Clarification, Diviner's Handbook, Feminist Bookstore, Forty Days and Forty Nights, and Wonderfully Made.

Coral has done a wonderful job of making premium daylilies available in Canada.

Ye, Edward, We are very lucky Coral is such an avid collector. It gives us a chance to see and buy plants we could never get in Canada. I also like the plants you named. I already have Clarification. Clar was loaned to Penny Manning at Ball point this spring. I think she got three prolifs. Clarification will come back home to me this spring....it is getting to see some of the world..:)..I also love some of the Carpenters[I have Mount Herman Treasure,] the SMiths[I have Golden THrone]..and the Kinnibrews..heck I love about every 4th or 5th plant..she has so many beauties....but I'm not adding new gardens this year...mulch is a wonderful word...it saves my back..cheers, lloyd

Well, I am pretty excited about all my fall plantings... as my space is becoming more and more limited. So, I REALLY have to stick to my guns and order my favorites... at least until a new bed goes in!! :o)

You got yourself some beauties FSG. I won LSO from Gcon on the LA last spring and am looking forward to it's 2nd year blooms in my garden next season.
I just finished planting my seedlings from Paul Owen, thank goodness I had enough room in a recently done bed. I wasn't expecting them till Oct. but Paul didn't see my note about shipping and sent them out Wed. morning after I ordered them Tues. night. :) I told him he was lucky they made it before I leave in the morning on my trip to PA. :) He also sent a wonderful bonus plant, which made 6 new ones and that's exactly how many I had room for! LOL Funny how that works out isn't it? ;-)

Oh, I broke down and ordered another one. When I saw PIGLET'S MOM (Ned Roberts) at a display garden it immediately went on my have to get it list.

The flowers are HUGE (reg @ 9 in), tall, and as pink as anything I've seen.

Well, I couldn't find a commercial source for it but finally asked the owner of the display garden and she agreed to sell me a couple fans.

I am getting a fall intro from the Stamiles called Snow Crystal. I never thought I would spend that much money for a daylily, but I have been really bad this fall and am expecting about 40 new daylilies.

I get excited about all my daylily purchases. I figgure if they are not worth getting excited about, then they are not worth buying :-))

But of my newest ones, I am really thrilled with my Paul Owen seedlings and just can't wait for them to bloom. Also quite excited about all the Mary Jane Meadows (westbourne) intros I have already gotten this fall and more already bought coming in spring.

Also very much looking forward to seeing if my season extending daylilies work out as planned for me.

I have to say that I am very excited about my very newest purchase tonight. Phil Korth sends his newsletter to those of us that have bought before and people on his waiting list. It previewed his 2009 collection before he puts it up on his website. There are 12 intros for 2009. I bought the entire 2009 collection.

As many of you know from my posting of pictures of the Korth intros already growing here, I love his intros. The 2009 collection is really stunning with some really interesting ones but my favorite, at least from pictures, is a wonderful looking very hard to describe thing called ROCKS CRY OUT. Then there is a very toothy one called CAST YOUR CROWN. And more, they are all great.

I bought that 2007 collection of his but padsed on the 2008 collection because he had too many weird shapped ones included. Maybe not quite spiders but UFOs that were not to my taste so I skipped 2008. Now I want to go back and pick up afew of my favorite 2008 ones to get in the spring along with my collection.

To anyone who wondered what I had planned to put in my new daylily beds in the front yard next year, I had said I had something in mind. This is a good part of what I had in mind.
