Who would you name a rose after?

Other than your family members, of course. That would be everyone's first choice, I am sure.

So, who would you choose? And what would the rose look like too? Of course some have to be a bit kooky, otherwise, what's the fun? I'll start:

1. Bob Dylan - a pink and yellow blend, Austin. Mix of old and new. Fragrance is different than any other rose. Anywhere. Smells a bit peculiar.

2. Theo Epstein - red and white blend, floribunda. I feel like I owe him. I tried to talk DH into naming our second baby Theo. No dice. She was a girl anyway.

3. Jonas Salk - Large red HT, because he deserves it for eradicating a major disease.

4. Would choose Lucille Ball, but she has one.

4. The Wiggles - 4 colored HT. I want to personally thank them for an occasional 30 minutes of peace/time to eat/read the paper. Any parents out there will completely understand.

5. Curious George - yellow and red striped OGR. If you have to ask why he deserves one, you have no soul. :-)

Michelle Kwan- it has to be something spectacular, elegant and flawless, can't pick of a color yet.

Sarah Brightman- it has be a beautiful climbing red rose.

Michael Schumacher- it has be a prolific - Ferrari red.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

"A survey of several isolates collected from blackberry and rose across the United States revealed minimal diversity between isolates, although the New World population of the virus is very different from the only European isolate sequenced (87). I would be the double delight. Double Delight, a hybrid tea rose with a long season of bloom, The double blossoms have a rich, creamy white to pale pink center with deep, ruby edging. They have a bushy habit, growing to about 4-5 feet with a 2-3 foot spread. Double Delight shows good disease resistance, although less so in wet weather, which also does in the blossoms. The political history of early 19th century France is written in the names of its roses, ancien regime vs. Bonapartists. 'Duchesse d'Auerstaedt' was the wife of one of Napoleon's marshals (I forget which); then there's 'Marechal Davoust', 'Napoleon', 'Eugene de Beauharnais' (Napoleon's stepson and viceroy of Italy). I presume 'Marie Louise' was named after Napoleon's second wife. On the monarchist side you have 'Princesse de Lamballe', one of Marie Antoinette's ladies in waiting, killed during the revolution, and 'Comte de Chambord', monarchist pretender to the French throne. The Bonapartists appear to have had the best of it in rose names. No one has mentioned 'General Schablikine' yet. Don't know who he was. I suppose a fair number of these military fellows are just celebrities of the day and the use of their names doesn't reflect the political convictions of the nurseryman who bestowed them on his creations. Belmont, how on earth did you get vowels with accents in your text without it showing up as gibberish? I can never manage that, and it seems that no one else is able to either. chisue, I agree that it would be a real double whammy to first find out you may have fathered a child over 30 years ago and then be asked if you'd be willing to donate a kidney if she is your daughter! My sister obviously wasn't thinking of how this could affect the other man when she named John as the father, if she was aware that he is not or might not be my niece's father. She'll have to prepare herself for any fallout if she ever has to contact the other guy. If I knew for certain that my mother was right, I would have confronted my sister years ago to explain the dangers of lying or not being certain about the paternity of your child, when you name someone as the biological father. But because my mother had no convincing evidence, whenever she brought up the subject to me, I told her she should only be expressing her concerns with my sister and no one else. I still don't know if my mother ever confronted my sister with her suspicions. Regardless, I've never considered myself to be 'keeping a secret' which implies to me that a known truth is kept from someone. I see it more as 'not spreading gossip' because there was no basis, other than suspicions based on 'looks.'

Nelson Mitchell - needs to be a dark red grandiflora, exhibition quality blooms, organic pest & disease control only. Must be a workhorse, just like Nelson. Someday I'll get serious about hybridizing.

Oh, that's a good question. I know there are lots, but the two I can think of off-hand are Danny Kaye- it would have to be a kind of wild (but not garish) colored rose with a great beauty and scent. He was a great actor, comedian, singer and humanitarian and very deserving of a rose named in his honor. And then Mother Teresa= self-explanatory. The rose would need to be stunningly beautiful with a scent to remember. Color? Not sure.

Mother Teresa for a pure white or golden yellow,
The Dalai Lama for a brownish red
Fuji-San (Mount Fuji in Japan) for a blushed white

To be named after such enduring symbols, they must have cold hardiness, excellent disease resistance, as well as fragrance! ....Calling on all hybriders in the world to step up the podium.

Now for the fun of it:
Harry Potter - a changeable color bloom for magic to happen
Dr. No Â thorniest as rose can be, brownish white with no fragrance.
Red Clifford Â of course itÂs red, duh. Huge, lousy bloom that makes everyone, esp. kids go gaga over it.

2. Rosa Parks - Single yellow, w/mottled apricot edges

3. Baby Jessica - Miniature white semi-double blossoms w/blush pink edges.

JP Patches a morning show host for kids who dressed up as a clown. It was one of the most popular shows in the Seattle area for twenty years.

I would think it would be a tall grandiflora in orange with a white reverse.

In keeping with the Romantica series of roses having names such as Michaelangelo, Toulouse Lautrec, Tchaikovsky, and Johann Strauss, I would like to see a couple more individuals remembered. Those two are Ludwig von Beethoven and Camille Saint-Saens. I'm not sure what they should look like, but given the depth and passion of the music that they wrote they should have a beautiful color, perhaps a red/yellow, red/white, orange/white or purple/white bicolor in an old fashioned form.

Gene Kelly - a floribunda, because his feet were everywhere (tap dancing). He was big on the artistic side of his movies (i.e. An American in Paris) - so a yellow rose dipped in strawberry juice. I still love watching his movies - wow!

Carol Burnett - Orange rose for her enthusiasm and clownishness. Big huge bloom like her big, huge voice. Carnation edges (fringed) in respect to her "curtain" dress from Gone With the Wind.

Maybe these people already have roses named after them?

I would probably buy a Curious George rose on principle, even if it was pale pink and fragrance free. (But who would, in fact, name a pale pink rose after Curious George?!)

Same thinking here as the bustopher's I just have a hard time to fit the rose necessary characteristics to the person

Johann Sebastian Bach - must have the most perfect spiral; maybe pale yellow with a different colored but in no sense garish reverse.

Albert Einstein- glowing, blinding white with flowers that always have a glorious bad hair day.

James Madison - the plant is small, looking fragile in statue that does not look too impressive from a distance. But at close up the bush has perfect, well-rounded shape while its exquisite, delicate flowers exude such a rich, powerful fragrance that makes other roses pale in comparison. The flowers must last on the bus and the vase 2 weeks or longer.

Henry James Â no idea how should such a rose look like but it must be very complex giving out bit by bit of its excellent qualities both in form and fragrance that draws back to everybody to see it and sniff it again and again. It should be a heavy bloomer.

Louis Bunuel -This rose would be loud but not gaudy, definitely blend of colors from Dot's palette. Huge, fantastic blooms. My wits end here. How could a rose exhibit deep irony?
(I would need that trait in case of H.James, too).

And the list could go onÂ

Fellini already has two roses named after him. I wonder how they look like.

1) Karl Bapst - I picture a double white Flouribunda with a good repeat, disease resistance and winter hearty.
2) Rosebud - Obviously a sport of Betty Prior, with a reverse to reflect Angelface.
Of course, both would thrive anywhere and give us no less than above average fragrance.
Two very serious Rosarians who have done much to help this Forum.
O/T We've purchased a new place with room for about 100 Roses, so I'll have to cram in a few in pots, etc.

Derek Jeter - A white rose with dark stripes. It would have lots of extra pollen and would pollinate a lot of other pretty roses.

Had to really think about this one..

Simon Cowell- A Ht. A very dark red/black rose, thick petals and lots of thorns. It would be so disease resistant it wouldn't care what tried to attack it.

Mae West- a grandiflora. Large white blooms with thin edges of crimson red. Extremely fragrant.

Paula Deen- a very floriferous(sp) floribunda with lots of butter yellow blooms with lighter yellow edges. Mild sweet fragrance.

And even though it's not supposed to be about loved ones I would name one "Forever Angels"(for the loss of my infant granddaughter Leah Rose). It would be pale pink with white reverse and darker pink edges. And it would always be disease resistant and in the exact bloom style the person choosing it would want it to be.

I was also thinking Rosa Parks!

Also, some other people who have created beauty:

Artists, such as Berthe Morisot, Kandinsky, Emil Nolde. Morisot and Nolde would be soft tones but Kandinsky would something like all white with one red petal per bloom!

Poet Edna St Vincent Millay with bold colored blooms to mirror her personality, aging to soft colors as beautiful as her words.

Susan B Anthony for her work and to make up for being ditched off the dollar! ;)

For those who mentioned Carol Burnett, there is a rose out named "Carol Burnett". It is new this year. I managed to get one and bring it back home with me from California last January. It is in the Armstrong exclusive collection and can only be bought at their garden stores. It is an apricot floribunda. At the moment it is making at least a token effort to grow having been ridden with blackspot and spider mites. I'm not sure it cares for our heat and humidity, but I will let it go on and see what it does.

Cimabue, Giotto - both must have heavy antique gold colored roses maybe with some purple stripe in the Giotto rose (should be blue, but purple would do it)

Durer already has a rose named after him. Alas, no rose name Vermeer.
Botticelli - how come? no rose?

Or, Balzac has a rose named after him but I cannot find a rose named Stendhal or Flaubert.

I know you said no relatives, but ironically, I was just telling my daughter on Monday, that if I ever hybridized a rose, I would name it after my beautiful granddaughter, Autumn Grace.

Ah, I forgot

Andy Partridge, the true "Prince of Pop" ('cause Prince is is the real "King"). Not sure what color, but his band did do a CD with "Oranges and Lemons" as the title, but there is already one of those. Something striped, for sure.

My first choice would be a man who is a highly esteemed rosarian, nursery owner and heck of a nice guy (first name is Greg) if he ever would desire for a rose to be named after him, he said he would refuse because "what if the rose turned out to be a dog?" The rose "Barbara Streisand" at once came to my mind , and I could see what he meant, as we s-p'd our "Barbara Streisand", it was so weak, spindly and sickly.
I do admit that I desired a rose to be named after my cat, "Lexis", she was the prettiest calico, now gone to her great reward.

I would like to name a rose after Rev Rebecca Parker, theologian, Pastor, President of A theological seminiary and a dear friend. It would have a beautiful clarity of color, a perfect cupshaped rose that holds up well through any storm, and has a full fragrance with a touch of almond and a spice. I think the color would be...a warm pink, pale outer petals with deeper pink center. The leaves would be deep green and disease resistant, but also quick to grow new foliage when damaged. IT would propagate easily and have no copyright...a pass along rose for all to share in friendship.

Whe it comes down to it I have gotten many roses for their names. I have found plenty for every name that I looked. I was surprised when I could not find a rose with the name Ryan in it. So I would find a famous Ryan and go with that.

Michelle Kwan - I think it would be a graceful silvery-lavender hybrid tea with long stems and a sweet scent

Margaritaville - a lime-green tinged white floribunda that has big blowsy blossoms and a citrus tea fragrance (for Jimmy Buffett)

Mother Teresa - would be a warm white with golden yellow reverse that would seem to glow from a distance, with a classic rose scent.

Nolan Ryan - a bright cardinal red climber that throws long canes, blooms up a storm, is extremely tough and loves sunshine (fragrance not important)

Katie Couric - would be a petite hybrid tea with yellow and hot pink striped flowers, covered with abundant blooms all season, and a sweet fruity fragrance

Yeah, I thought Motown was a great idea. I'm a middle aged white chick who grew up on the same.... Still have lots of my old Motown vinyl.
