What might have Hansa's fragrance but not color...?
Comments (9)Many of the rugosas that are close to the species have that lovely cloves-and-roses scent. Mostly those roses are magenta or white, though there may be a few in a lighter pink. To get a true lipstick red you have to move pretty far away from the species, since red is not a color much (if ever) found in old roses. Your chances of getting that scent you like diminishes as you move in that direction. However, there may be a few that retain it. I can't tell you what they are, since I just grow a couple of favorites, and they are magenta, a color I rather like when used in moderation. Perhaps someone else can advice you as to specific varieties. You might also consult Suzanne Verrier's excellent book Rosa Rugosa. It is packed full of color photographs, so you will know what you are getting. Rosefolly...See MoreWhat might cause moisture inside walls?
Comments (9)We saw the problem (with the wet insulation) in two places -- one in a wall on the east side and one on the west side of the house (the roof slants towards these two sides). Both are places that we know get a lot of rain hits (one is where water falling off a porch roof hits the side of the house, the other is at a place where the house has sort of an "L" shape, so water splashes off one side of the L and hits the rotted side). The north side of the house has very wet and slightly rotted clapboards (even the trim is rotted), but we haven't dug in enough yet to check out the insulation. The painter is planning to check the rest of the walls tomorrow, so I can hopefully give some more information then. From what I can tell, the south side of the house is comparatively fine. The paint peeled less on that side as well (although it did peel some). There are pipes in one of the two problem walls, but not the other. I have to admit that I don't know what the moisture barrier would look like. There's some sort of clear plastic up against the sheet rock (inside the insulation), there's also something on the outside that looks like black woven fabric with a silver paper-like surface (the silver side is towards the outside of the house). I doubt we have too much insulation - we've done some work in other parts of the house and the insulation seemed correct for the age of the house (built in 1987), although it's a bit short of current standards. We keep the house really cold in the winter - generally 60 degrees - and we don't have AC or central air, so the summer temperatures are about the same as outside....See MoreWhat might be causing this debris and what's the cure?
Comments (14)"The first few days of my kitchen redo, I cleaned up after the guys left (even though they did their version of daily cleanup and had the area enclosed in plastic). Pretty soon I realized that was futile and a waste of my time" Maybe you are using this as a figure of speech, but cleaning up after contractors even if it's a daily thing and they are going to get the same things dirty the next day, shouldn't be considered a "waste of your time". It's your house and your investment and you have to protect your own investment. Yes, even though you are paying someone to clean up. Why? Because some things that happen are probably more than just cumulative. A bit of crumbled drywall or a loose nail that gets caught around the edges of something protecting the floor will get ground into the floor if left there for a week. Small bits of grout left behind on the bathtub or shower drain will inevitably be stepped on and scratch the tub. Sawdust underneath the cabinets is going to be left there and covered up with the toe kick. Even it it's been vacuumed with a shop vac unless you get under there and clean it, a fair amount will be left behind. Your cleaning crew is not coming to the end of the project by which point it will be covered. The project manager for the last big project I did (who I did not like) left a paper coffee cup on the mantle and after sitting there for over a week it etched a ring in the 170 old fireplace surround. I didn't pick it up because I didn't like her, I was waiting to see if she would ever notice it, (obviously not) and when I finally threw it away myself, that's when I saw that it had eaten into the marble. I could be all p1ssed off at her (which I was), I could have thrown a big fit, I could have even posted a thread about it. but ultimately I had seen it there myself and was being passive aggressive about it and ultimately ruined my own fireplace by neglecting something I saw. Even though my contractor cleans up, he is still wearing dirty clothes, and he himself is not clean at the end of the day, so I don't feel that his "clean" is quite as clean as things should be. So it gets cleaned after he cleans. Yes, every time he is onsite and even though he will make a mess the next day. I don't consider this a waste of my time, and I have a full-time job, and work some evenings and have paperwork to do at home too. I don't consider myself too important or too busy to protect my own investment....See MoreCracks in brand new walls. What might be the cause? is it serious?
See More- 20 days agolast modified: 20 days agoAndrea zone 9b thanked sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
