Quite a few roses named after Napoleon and a few named after Admiral Nelson. Two roses with Greek war of independence references are Botzaris and Ipsilante.

Purplish blue clematis âÂÂGeneral Sikorskiâ would look great grown with climbing roses. Texas may be too hot, though. Sorry, OT!

The political history of early 19th century France is written in the names of its roses, ancien regime vs. Bonapartists. 'Duchesse d'Auerstaedt' was the wife of one of Napoleon's marshals (I forget which); then there's 'Marechal Davoust', 'Napoleon', 'Eugene de Beauharnais' (Napoleon's stepson and viceroy of Italy). I presume 'Marie Louise' was named after Napoleon's second wife. On the monarchist side you have 'Princesse de Lamballe', one of Marie Antoinette's ladies in waiting, killed during the revolution, and 'Comte de Chambord', monarchist pretender to the French throne. The Bonapartists appear to have had the best of it in rose names.
No one has mentioned 'General Schablikine' yet. Don't know who he was. I suppose a fair number of these military fellows are just celebrities of the day and the use of their names doesn't reflect the political convictions of the nurseryman who bestowed them on his creations.
Belmont, how on earth did you get vowels with accents in your text without it showing up as gibberish? I can never manage that, and it seems that no one else is able to either. I ought to add that I'm using an Italian keyboard, but most posters don't have that complication.

Some military roses in my garden: Capitaine John Ingram, Commandant Beaurepaire, Corporal Johann Nagy (a bad photo enclosed) , and von Scharnhorst, a Prussian general.

Two I don't grow are Général Jacqueminot and Géneral Schablikine, just testing if the diacritics will show up. I am using a Swedish keyboard.

Many of the "military figures" as well as general politicians of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century have had roses (and other plant types) named for them. General McArthur, at least four named for Hindenburg, Churchill, and many others were memorialized by rose names. K.T. Marshall was Gen. George C. Marshall's wife. The story of how the K.T. Marshall rose came to be so named is recounted in Papa Floribunda. Both Admiral Ward and his wife, Mrs. Aaron Ward were also so honored. Then, you have those which were named to commemorate particular battles. La Marne and Verdun immediately come to mind. This is where an edition of Modern Roses comes in handy as you have an actual printed list of entries to scan for familiar names instead of having to think of and search for particular names in a database. Melissa, I'm on a Mac and I can get the accents with keystroke combinations. The only one I always remember is "é" which is "option" (or "alt") plus "e" at the same time, then just "e." Sometimes I just copy and paste names from other places if there are many accents.

Also, I just noticed that in my Firefox browser there's an option under the "Edit" menu called "Special Characters" which gives me a window where it looks like I can select just about any character. Other browsers might have something like that too.
