North or south for roses in bloom UK June 20-24?
Comments (6)Thanks, Malcolm Manners; but my favorite cartoon shows 2 tourists asking a Louvre guard, "Which way to the Mona Lisa? We're double parked." And that is what our one week trip is like: I figured 2 days gardens, 4 days London museums. We hit the ground running, staggering off the overnight plane at Heathrow and being loaded into a car with hired driver, and being expected at a Bloomsbury hotel about 6 PM. Mondays, not every garden is open. I'm thinking, Wisley (my father was a botanist and I love looking at anything that grows). And one more - which other one for later Monday? Tuesday, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter. After that we go indoors for glorious days at the British Museum and other museums. So I may have to plan a trip next year, learn how to drive on the wrong side of the road, and take 2-3 weeks for that trip, in order to cover the rose bloom time whenever it turns out to be, global warming or new ice age. Next year could be a longer solo trip, include East Anglia, and perhaps get to see the many places that are engraved in my literary memory. So I need, for now, 1 other garden to visit within an hour's drive of Wisley. Carol...See MoreBlooms Affected by Early Bloom Season
Comments (10)Mine are doing some of the same- I've been blaming it on the lack of rain but we did have the early heat and now cooler weather. Blooms are lower than usual, including asian and oriental lilies, some are blooming weird-never fully open and I have one yesterday where the entire flower looked fine except for one mushy ugly petal. It looked like the one petal had bloomed the day earlier than the rest and was dying back while the rest of the flower was fine. Flowers that I have had for quite awhile are shorter than usual and smaller blooms, colors on what few have bloomed not as bright as last year. It's still early bloom season, so I don't have many blooming yet-but they aren't at their best....See MoreJust a few more early blooms.
Comments (7)Here's a few more that were open this morning: another blossom of Soleil d'Or Its parent Persian Yellow, which was rather hard to photograph--the petals kept reflecting too much light. another of Persian Yellow's decendents, Harrison's Yellow. Looks quite similar doesn't it? Actually Persian Yellow's blooms are a bit larger. Stanwell Perpetual is very chlorotic this year, so much so that its blooms are white instead of pink. Its actually going to a new home later today, hopefully it will be happier there. Reine des violettes is not looking so violet--I guess is got too hot too quickly to see the really purple blooms it had last autumn. and one more blossom from the Rosa santa Richards not Andrews band befoe I remove it and the rest of the buds and give it a chance to grow. This blossom shows off a bit more of its pink tint than the last post did. I had a few more blooms, but the one of my very favorite rose, Geranium Red, was looking rather battered and I refuse to photograph him looking less than his best. But oh, the fragrance!! Speaking of which, I've always heard Persian Yellow and Harison's Yellow had very bad fragrances, but I found them mild and pleasant....See Moreearly bloom in growers pot - too early?!
Comments (11)According to the Takii PDF file the Canna Cannova Seed strain has taken over 10 years for development to meet the cooler and shorter growing climate of northern Europe. These cannas should fit well within large areas in the United States. Producing F1 hybrids such as this is expensive and time consuming undertakings. They more importantly offer the consumer virus free cultivars that are difficult to find available from most sources. One’s other option would to be purchasing tissue cultured and virus indexed plugs which are also more expensive and definitely not widely available. Therefore, depending on the source, the price may not be out of line for the product in my opinion. Here in the states, I did find a listing for some of the Cannove series available from Ball Seed Co. Given the time of the year and the fact that this is a new product, the availability may be limited or gone. Takii introduced the Tropical Series of canna several years ago and seed became readily available. Kent...See Moremmmm12COzone5
