Etsy Designers at Home: Jessica Rose from vol25
We first ran across Jessica Rose through her Etsy store, vol 25 - and it was totally love at first sight. Jessica Rose's art is sweet and cute without being overly cutesy. Perfect for kids, but appropriate for grown-ups, too. We love it.
Her blog is a fantastic extension of the Etsy shop, where Jessica Rose shares her design inspirations, fantastic stories about her kids (with great photos), and updates on her current projects.
After checking out her store and blog, we just knew that Jessica Rose's home would show off her personality, love for her family, and design sensibilities. A glance at her home on Flickr and we confirmed our suspicions - she and her family live in a great house. Even the unfinished basement (last photo) is full of cute touches.
Not for long, though. They've actually just put the house up for sale and they are looking for a bigger space. But for now, they're still in place, still enjoying their warm, pretty home - and sharing it with us!
We got a chance to ask Jessica Rose a few questions about her home and her store. Here's what she had to say:
Please tell us about your "first meeting" with your house
Our first meeting was definitely memorable. But not necessarily in a good way!
The house was built in 1892 and was a bank foreclosure in horrible shape. It had been empty for a few months. The carpet was missing in all the rooms, and the mortar walls had holes throughout the house. The toilet rocked when you sat on it, and the bathroom floor was missing and rotted in spots.
We brought my parents to the showing to get they're opinion and I can still remember my dad telling us that the house looked like a lot of work. He was right, it's been an ongoing process, and it has taken us three years to bring the house to its current condition. Although its been quite the job, it is definitely a rewarding experience.
What is the first step of your decorating process?
I am a dedicated list maker, and love planning things out. So, my first step begins with a list and a budget. My inspiration for a room generally starts with color. After that is decided, everything else seems to fall into place.
What is the biggest decorating challenge you've faced?
My biggest challenge would have to be merging my husband's tastes with my own. We've been married for 6 years now, and I have to admit he is getting a little less opinionated... but it is still hard to find that place in the middle. Combine that with a very limited budget, and there is definitely a challenge to be had! :)
Describe your favorite style and colors.
Right now I dream of re-decorating my living room in yellows and grays. I think they go so well together. I adore stripes, and graphic patterns. I gravitate to modern style (LOVE ikea) with a little bit of vintage/thrift thrown in for good measure.
What's the one spot in your house that makes you most happy or proud?
My favorite part is most definitely our entry "area." We lack a foyer, so I hung a few ikea shoe cabinets by the door. It helps to eliminate shoe clutter, and I think it defines the space.
What's your most precious accessory, piece of furniture or work of art?
My Aunt gave me my late great grandfather's vintage ansco camera. I love to imagine the memories that were captured with this camera. It is definitely one of my favorite items.
What's your next home project?
Actually, it seem surreal to say it, but we are completely finished with this house. We have it listed with a realtor, and are hoping to buy a house with a little more square footage. I am in desperate need of a studio or work space.
What are the 5 things that houzz readers need to know about your Etsy store?
1) That it is stocked with modern inspiring art (mainly digital) that I hope will put a smile on your face... think the warm fuzzies. :)
2.) All my prints are printed on a luscious natural canvas paper.
3.) Many people ask what the story is behind the name vol25. In January of 2008 when I opened the doors to my little shop (via etsy.com) I was 25 years old, and vol25 was like opening a new volume in my life, which in turn has created several new chapters for me.
4.) A few of my prints are customizable and make great wedding/anniversary/Christmas gifts.
5.) You will find a large collection of quotes/reminders paired with whimsical art.
What is your best tip for the decorating beginners?
I would have to say the best tip would be to search the internet for inspiring rooms. Bookmark pages, and write notes. Be sure and notice what you like in each picture. When your done take inventory of your ideas. Keep the ones that really get you excited. :)
I find its easiest to start neutral, and add color by way of pillows/throws or inexpensive accessories. This way it is cheaper to revamp a room when you want a change.
Jessica Rose, thank you so much for opening your home (and your shop) to the Houzz community! Good luck with the sale process - maybe you'll even find a buyer right here on Houzz!
