Good suggestion ctycdm, but in order to make Thermador work for me I have to take advantage of one of their vent systems as it is free with the package. If I go off brand, it becomes cost prohibitive. I do have an alternate package with Bluestar, Bosch, Electrolux and either a Zephyr or Kobe range hood which comes in at a bit less $$ but with the added burden of using multiple online vendors, potential shipping issues and having to store the units at my current home and then figure out how to get them to the build site when its ready. With the Therm, I have a local vendor who will deliver to the site whenever I need it and who will help me deal with any service issues. It's been a tough decision overall, I'd rather have the bluestar range top, the dishwashers are a total wash (har har), I though the ovens were a wash but reading about the blue porcelain chipping issues and recent changes to Elux warranty have given me pause, plus with the therm I'd be doing a single oven plus a steam convection which gives more utility and the benefit of separate units should one fail. The Therm fridge beats the Elux handily I think, but the hood may be a issue. That's why all the posts, if I'm going to spend a little bit more for the overall package, I don't want to end up with a vastly suboptimal vent hood and smelly, greasy kitchen. I don't know where to get one with a black finish, but I know two sources for barrel hoods with copper finish. One is Independent Hoods, their "Bonanza" hood in the copper (it also comes in stainless). Independent makes very good quality hoods. I'll link to one below, but I didn't do any price shopping - it was the first one that came up, so you may be able to find it for less. On that site the 36" Bonanza hood is $4541, plus the Independent blower (sold separately) is about $500. Not cheap, but a lot less than the $8000 you mentioned. You could try calling Independent Hoods directly. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy direct from the source. There is also custom hoods by Handcrafted Metal. They can make anything you want, but on their website they show a barrel hood on their stainless hoods tab, and on their copper hoods tab, a hood, not a barrel (kinda the opposite cause it's a concave curve instead of a convex barrel), but with the straps and rivets. Like I said, they'll make you whatever you want. But just to get an idea of cost, you can click on the photos; the copper concave hood looks like it'll cost about $3500 in the 36" size (includes the blower), and the straps and rivets cost more - the website shows a 52" hood where the straps and rivets are an additional $3300, so I'm guessing a 36" size the straps and rivets would add, I dunno, $2400? Still less expensive than Modernaire. The 6" is a real problem. Most of the vent hoods needed to go over a true prosumer range, including Capital, will need high cfms, and a 6" duct won't work with them. When you're pulling a lot of air, you need a big duct. That's a nice way of saying that I'm pretty suspicious of any hood manufacturer who claims to be able to get you 900 cfms through a 6 inch duct and it be anything approaching quiet. If it could be done that way, then Broan, Ventahood, and other well respected manufacturers wouldn't universally specify 8" (or larger!) ducts for their ventilation fans. I believe this is really a case of you get what you pay for, and there really isn't an island hood that truly appraoches quiet and effective with a 6" duct. Islands are a ton more expensive to ventilate properly. But, proper ventilation is NOT something to skimp on. It's the #2 most neglected aspect of any kitchen design right behind proper lighting. Most newer homes of the last few years don't manage to get this right, and it's such a shame! Good indoor air quality is harder to achieve with a tight house, and it's actually even more vital to properly vent the steam grease and smoke from such a tight modern house than it is an older air leaky home.

Hey folks. We've been using the 36" Zephyr Monsoon DCBL one-piece-liner with the following specs for a few months. We really hesitated to spend this much since our reno is essentially a budget/DIY one, but we are pleased with our purchase. Min.-Max. CFM 250 - 715 Min.-Max. Sones 0.8 - 5.8 Our installation is not ideal as our hood is mounted quite high due for head injury prevention reasons. That contributes to higher noise level and less efficient function. Overall, we are pretty happy with this hood. The hood can't keep up with extreme searing, but we are no longer routinely setting off the smoke alarm :) . It does move a tremendous amount of air at higher settings - at the outdoor vent you can see nearby leaves whipping around. I am satisfied with the noise levels, which was my major concern. At setting 1 (250 CFM) I hear a low hum, which does not annoy me if I am trying to chat or listen to music. That setting is fine for regular cooking and I am getting used to having the fan all the time when using the range. Setting 2 is louder, but still possible to chat or listen to music...and definitely pulls more air. Setting 3 is getting noisy, but I use it for shorter periods when frying bacon, etc. Setting 4 or 5 might suck up one of my children - powerful and loud. I like using Setting 1 when I notice lingering cooking smells after cooking in our large open concept space. The LED lights are pretty good. I like having a high and low setting. I like that all controls are on the underside rather than the front. Also, there are no LED lights when the unit is off (unless the baffles are due for cleaning) - also a plus. I like the feature that shows when the baffles are due to cleaning because I probably would not do this often enough. Previously we used two different builder grade hoods, and there is simply no comparison with the efficiency of suction and the noise levels, so this is a huge upgrade. I was thrilled to get free shipping of the hood to Canada from wayfair.ca. We never get free shipping in Canada!! Unfortunately the unit arrived quite damaged from the shipping process. The box was sturdy but the internal packing was inadequate. We decided to fix it rather than deal with the hassle of getting a remedy.
