I can not stand upper cabinets- they are right in my face and make me feel claustrophobic even in a largish kitchen. The thin that I thought was most useful in the whole article were Clements storage rules. So true! Can also be applied to those who wail about bathrooms never having enough storage. We definitely do not need to store so much stuff.

I'm laughing because I ADDED more upper cabinets to my tiny 72sf kitchen when I moved in - the previous owners of my condo must not have cooked much because there was no storage! I cannot bear the clutter and busy appearance of items on open shelves, it stresses me out. It looks much neater and calmer to me having everything behind doors. I've had open shelves before (landlord was too cheap to buy cabinets) and everything on the shelves accumulated a layer of sticky dust quite quickly, I had to wash everything before I used it as well as after and every week or two take everything off the shelves and wash the shelves. Yuck. With closed cabinets I just have to wipe down the doors every few months, since the vertical surfaces don't collect as much crud as horizontal ones, and the insides of the cabinets don't get dusty. I'm only 5'3" and have no problem reaching the lower two shelves of my upper cabinets; I keep a slim folding stepstool tucked in next to my refrigerator if I need to get to the top shelf. I suppose if I had a much larger kitchen that could have multiple tall cabinets and lots more lowers, I wouldn't need uppers, but my whole kitchen is 10 cabinets, I need every bit of storage I can wring out.

Like you, grizelda42, I can't stand clutter and I don't want to re-wash everything before I use it. I have a large kitchen and I still don't want open shelving. As with everything else, it's good to have choices, and to each his own.
