Island range hood dilemma
Comments (14)...it needs to be a 6" duct. Unfortunately, the Kobe, which looks like exactly what I want (but do not want to pay for) specifies a 7" duct. Just regarding the duct size issue, I wouldn't normally recommend going with a fan that needs a larger duct than what you have. HOWEVER, in your case, it's only a 1" size difference, and you have stringent requirements on the appearance (i.e. glass canopy), and you say that this model is "exactly what I want". Kobe also has a good reputation on this forum for making quality hoods. The consequence of your 1" difference will be a somewhat noisier hood. There have been posts on this forum from people with 6" ducts using hoods that need 8", who experience more noise, but that seems to be the only consequence. It'll depend on you whether you feel, quality-of-life-wise, that consequence is a significant one. As to the price, how out of your budget is it? I have found that with my kitchen re-do, I have sacrificed some things I originally planned for in my kitchen for some things I really wanted. I.e. I re-jiggered where I was spending money. There's several cabinetry options I decided to forego in favor of some other things, and I don't think I'll miss them. Is there something else in your kitchen you can sacrifice in order to get the hood that you say is "exactly" what you want"?...See Moreake suggestions. Wolf island hood ? Dacor oven/range
Comments (5)I have a Wolf Island hood. I like it, but I use it with an external blower and silencer so I can't comment on how loud it might be with an internal blower. More importantly, on an island or peninsula installation, the hood has to overlap the burners by enough to collect the rising and expanding effluent from the cooking process. There are no wall or side cabinets to aid this collection. If your candidate hood is 42 x 27 as I suspect from the model number without looking it up, it is probably big enough for most cooking, so long as there aren't cross drafts. The hood should be centered over the boundaries of the array of pans you might use, and this affects either the layout of joists above the hood, or the placement of the island so that the ducting can penetrate the ceiling above the hood center. It is better to look into this before it becomes expensive to accommodate. kas...See MoreModern-Aire or Kobe Island Range Hood
Comments (8)Had similar thoughts a few years ago. I decided based on the price and specs to go with Kobe. Ordered from their online distributers w/o ever seeing one in person. First delivery came with the box chewed up! I called them and they sent a new hood to me and covered return charges. I didn't know if it was damaged or not, but didn't want to chance it. New hood installed by contractor. Fans were off balance and hitting the side of the hood as they spun. Called Kobe again. Service sent out and problem was fixed. It was a rocky start, but actually the customer service was good and pretty quick (and I live in a rural OH area). Since then I've been extremely pleased with the hood. It's beautiful. It's quiet at the low setting, and it moves major air at the top setting. I have it over a 30 inch Electrolux DF range. Has an 18K burner. With all 4 burners going the hood keeps up (although its pretty hot and I'd expect any hood to be). I've been very pleased with it and would get another one. Especially for the price!! BTW our duct is 3 feet straight up, a 90 degree angle and 10 feet out to the wall. \tried to attach photo but...couldn't...See MoreRecommendations for island range hood over 36" bluestar range top?
Comments (3)Hoods that try to mimic actual commercial hoods while retaining a more modest size, practical aspect, and decent aesthetics are widely available from many sources that can be found on the Internet. For example, you can download the Wolf Design Guide and look at the pro island hoods to get an idea. There are others fabricating similar designs. While this is a necessary exercise, the first step is characterizing the parameters of the hood, blower, and make-up air system. To do this, it is necessary to start with the size of the cooktop. If you have already done all the math and know your necessary hood size, then a tour of hood makers' wares is next. Please keep in mind that of performance, aesthetics, and affordability, generally only two out of three can be maximized. Most hoods are compromises within these factors....See Morekandkwi
