Thank you both! The contractor had told me that it would be fine to run a duct to the existing roof hole from a different location, but I wanted a second opinion. Sounds as though it is OK as long as we make sure the hood and the duct are both adequately sized, and I will keep in mind that our current setup might not be. What you both say makes perfect sense. I don't know the angle the bends would be (depends on the final layout) but I think that avoiding right angles would be possible considering that we don't have to go through a wall first. Just straight through the ceiling and then over to the hole in the roof through the attic. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for the answers. What a help! I think the space between joists is 9.5 inches. My contractor and I worked out this morning that he can do a 9x9 square duct, which my new friend, Pat at Modern-Aire, says would be much better than an 8inch round, and better than the 9-inch round we were thinking of. Now you have me worried about the make-up air. I read about it on GW but assumed I woudn't need it because our kitchen is so big. But it won't be leaky because the windows and most of the construction are new. Maybe I could do 1000 instead of 1200?

You'll find roughly four camps here, in my very-biased observation: * Baffle filters are the way to go * Vent-A-Hood all the way * Where can I buy affordable replacements for my mesh filters * I just ignore trying to clean my mesh filters Ok, all kidding aside, baffles are considered by many easier to clean and having greater longevity than mesh filters. None of the hoods you show probably do a lot, especially in an island situation, because of a combination of their flat geometry and their relatively low-flow blowers. I'd take some time and read through some of the posts here and decide if you want to back up a step in your decision process. Hi everyone. Been reading a lot on this site and got tons of good info. Just purchased and installed a Best by Broan 48 inch range hood with external 1200 cfm blower. Used rigid duct, Fantec silencer, one 45 degree bend, one 90 degree and a total physical length of 13 feet - calculated at maybe 25 feet. Hood is super quiet - basically you can not hear anything until until about mid speeds (variable adjustement) and max speed is mostly lots of air rushing thru the baffles - lots of air. Question - how do I know if the hood blower is working properly. For example I don't feel lots of air being drawn in down below the baffles. Air is felt about 6 inches below the baffles and a sheet of paper will stick to the baffles as others stated for a test. Should the air being drawn in be felt lower or is this about normal. I also had a window open when testing. How much below the baffles should I feel air being drawn in when on full speed Thanks
