Kitchen backsplash Dilemma

We are getting ready to install our kitchen backsplash using 3x6 white subway tiles, but our biggest dilemma is where it ends due to the light switches being in the way.

The best thing to do is to move the switches over to the right, and then end the tile with the upper cabinet. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/z0E4ZwAPJ-Y

Is that an old phone jack? Is it necessary? If not, remove it before you tile. And…move the switches to the right, too.

That;s the wrong color travertine. It's the silver vein. you need a Durango cream or the Ivory travertine in larger tiles. these are larger format, honed and filled ivory travertine set on a diagonal. prob 8x8'shere is what it looks like w/your granite with the cream color in a 3x6 However, I do like the copper, but again, something larger. these are from Mius Art Mosaic and are a ceramic or porcelain, glazed to look like copper. easy to clean and install or do these larger 6x12 tiles. notice the under cabinet lighting and how it reflects the light. this is what you need. this slate tile will also go w/your decor Without a doubt, you need more light. You can't do some recessed cans in the actual ceiling portion? if no, can you paint those planks white? or paint the beams white? something in the ceiling needs to be white if you can't add more lighting. you will also need under cabinet lighting. few examples...painting the slats and using pendants longer track lighting and recessed lights over the sink area longer and more track lighting.

they sound interesting enough to me, being crackled and having variation. larger size might work..what size you consider? Gray is already considered dated lol. Makes no sense to me personally as all this dated thing is a new concept I'm still struggling with-how a color can be dated? but in terms of what happens in trends etc-it's on its way out, yes. they move into warmer tones. they're still into greiges for now to bridge between things a bit. white is becoming big as a neutral. wood stains are making a big comeback. this update on trends can go on and on but i'm sure you can find thousand threads here discussing it so i'll make it short. if you're really worried-it might be you're simply are not attached to a color enough. which is okay, really. then pick off-white. off white is pretty. Even very much so. I like both off whites and grays(I do have preference for much warmer grays though) so I have off whites and warm grays. And many other colors too since I love them too. I commit by choosing something of course,-but it's fine since commitment, paradoxically, is a road to freedom:) But I admit I was also worrying when choosing..well choosing everything except for stuff like toilets etc. Of course one worries, it's a hassle and an expense and you want to love it in the end. So. Try to worry less. If you can remove "dated" from the equation- great. Go with your heart's desire. If no-then ok, take it into equation and don't do gray. Worry less. You did a great job on everything else, so no reason to think your backsplash won't turn out well either. It will.

Lol, yes, it’s a DiY job. The end wall tile goes there because the kitchen countertop extends all the way there and it just looked weird stopping it before the countertop. We didn’t want to leave the sink without backsplash. Did I mention it’s a DIY because the original contractor left with us without kitchen (and 12K) for three months? May just leave it without then. Thanks for the input.

I had a similar situation. Finding a tile I liked that came with a coordinating corner bullnose was like trying to find a unicorn. I finally “settled” for using the thinnest matching pencil tile for the tile I liked, mitering it at the corner. We matched the grout to the tile and I was pleasantly surprised that the pencil tile doesn’t “stick out” at all. I ended up loving it. The matching grout was key. If you end up with shelves or a cabinet on that side you will still need either a pencil tile or Schluter edge on the side. The Schluter isn’t my thing - a bit to modern looking for our kitchen - but you can see both types of edge in the Houzz photos.

Move the electrical, get rid of the phone jack and contrary to the advice above?

Tile ends at the countertop edge. Why? Because tile is simply the decorative replacement for a standard 4 inch counter riser.

Where does THAT end? At the counter edge. Because stopping short would look like a mistake. Same will happen if you tile that way.

(When you move the switches? replace with Lutron, much nicer

Remove the land line jax if not used. The other's are there due to code/studs etc. You need to tile around them.

What tile are you using? I always paint the switch and outlet covers the same color as the wall.

Lutron is great for plugs and switches come in a ton of colors to disappear as much as possible I agree to the end of the counter and the phone jack is not needed for sure I think I would just do the new plugs and switches to match the wall color and tile only to the bottom of the switches like the look of the 4" pice of the counter Unless you are very good at tiling and have a really good tile saw keep it simple .

Cut open the wall, slide the outlet over, and install tile. I guess I’m the outlier here as I align the tile with the upper cabinet not the counter.

Lol............so you're left in the most noticeable, eye catching spot....like you ran out of tile? and every time you spray and wipe that counter that stupid one inch will be there in your face with nothing but drywall behind it.

If that was a counter 4" riser? You'd shoot the fabricator who did that, yes? No?

You could ask a thousand people the right or wrong, and 500 would say to the upper cabinet edge, and 500 would say to the counter edge.

I say I would KILL a tile guy who ended short of the counter. : )

To make it easier to move the switches, consider a compact style like this one that only ends up taking the space of 1 traditional switch, assuming dexterity and smaller switches is not a usability concern for you:

I think where to end the BS is more nuanced than to follow the simple rule to end it like you would a 4" BS. The 4" BS never tied in directly with the upper cabinet, so for that reason it totally made sense to end it at the end of the countertop. However, when a BS ties in with the upper cabinet, then it's a different situation. When you install a full BS beyond the upper cabinet, my eyes go directly to the "bent-elbow" or "appendage" sticking out to the side of the cabinet rather than to where the countertop/BS meet, which is lower than eye-level and is on a different plane. However, if the countertop and the BS are the same material, then yes, I agree that the BS should end at the countertop, but I still think it looks off to me and I would much rather have the BS enclosed on both sides by a tall cabinet or boxed-in by corners for a nicely-appointed-look.
