Design Dilemma: Choosing Chairs for a District Dining Table
12 not-too-industrial dining chairs for a Houzz user's kitchen
User Discodaisy33 recently posted this query on our Questions board:
I love the District Dining Table from Crate and Barrel. Can you recommend some chairs that would look good with it, and keep from being too industrial? I like the metal chairs, but feel like they make the table feel a bit harsh. Thanks for your help! (I am going to paint my kitchen a green color, but have not chosen one yet.)
The metal chairs she mentions are the Lyle Side Chairs that Crate and Barrel shows with the table (they are a take on metal French cafe chairs). Discodaisy33 describes her style as contemporary/traditional (we'll call it transitional). The kitchen is large and the family will likely spend a lot of their time pulled up to this table.

District Dining Table
What's great about this table is that it's a versatile piece. It can play host to a slew of different chairs and light fixtures to go more traditional, transitional, eclectic or contemporary. The top in this picture is a little deceiving; it's not black, but rather a gray galvanized steel.
Here's Discodaisy's kitchen in its current state. The large room can certainly handle a much larger table/eat-in area. The dining table and chairs are a great opportunity to add some unique details.
Village Foglie Green Side Chair and Stripe Cushion
If you want to bring the green color in without having to paint the walls, these sturdy chairs from Crate and Barrel are a great shade of apple, and their high backs will stand up to the proportions of the table.
Terai Folding Chair
These chairs from Anthropologie come in a range of colors and patterns. Obviously these are a batch you either "have-to-have-it" love or have no interest in whatsoever — there is no in-between. If you wanted to get a big mix, you could choose a batch of them to mix things up.
HENRIKSDAL Chair
For a softer look, and more comfort during homework time, this upholstered chair is a great pick. The possibilities for fabric choice are endless, but this black-and-white floral reminds me of a favorite eat-in kitchen on Houzz. With the sticky fingers of little ones around, you may want to look into the removable slipcovers option for the next decade, just in case.
Tolix Café Chair
I know Discodaisy feared going too industrial with metal chairs, but a selecting a bright color will lighten up the industrial vibe.
Emeco 111 Navy Chair - Red
Similarly, the classic Emeco Navy Chair now comes in bright colors, toning down the industrial feel.
French Cafe Chairs
The weave on these chairs will add some texture to her kitchen with French bistro style.
Constance Chairs Set of 2
One last cafe/bistro option: the curved "X" detail on the back of this graceful chair gives it unique style. This wood will navigate well between the wood of the District Dining Table and the wood on her cabinets.
Dalloway Armchair
One way to to add some personal style to a space like this is to mix some arm chairs to the ends of the table. If this one is a bit bold for you, here is a more classic Windsor chair.
Tapered High-Back Windsor Chair
This unique high-backed chair is Windsor-meets-Frank Lloyd Wright. Because Discodaisy's kitchen is so large, the height is a good match for the scale of her kitchen.
STEFAN Chair
This chair from IKEA is one of my favorite icons. The lines would work really well with the District table. I've painted the hand-me-down version I have many times, using it all over the house. Plus, the price is an unbelievable $19.99, which could leave some $$$ for a new light fixture or area rug for the space.
Circolo Collection Olde Bronze Rectangle Chandelier | LampsPlus.com
Speaking of light fixtures, when Discodaisy gets a larger rectangular table, she can use a larger light overhead to give the entire area more presence. The finish on this one will play nicely off the black accents in her kitchen.
