When my kids were teenagers, and we had just moved from a larger home in the Midwest to a smaller home on the east coast, their bedrooms were too small for their desks. Also they liked to work on homework together. We used the dining room space for a homework and office space. I placed their two desks back to back in the middle of the room under a central chandelier. It seemed natural in that room. I wonder if that sort of arrangement would work for you.

I prefer not to stare at a wall while working. I prefer my desk to float in the room, or at most to have a side of the desk abutted against the wall.

You are right this is a mess. I would start by removing everything except the desk. All the stuff off the walls and the shelves. Do you have a closet in this space? I like lots of work surface so I need more info as to exactly what this space is used for? Do you work from home or is this truly just a home office?. Post a to scale floor plan and a list of all the stuff you need to make the office function.

What are the dimensions of this room? Can you draw a floor plan on graph paper for your post so we can see what you're working with? In my previous house I had a shallow closet built along one wall with shelves in it. There are plenty of things you need to store that can't be displayed artfully on open shelves. That way the doors were closed on whatever mess I had going on in there, and building a closet can be cheaper than building an attractive wall unit. If this is a room that could also be used as a bedroom in the future then build the closet regulation depth. Otherwise, build it just deep enough to hold 12" shelves (or the next size up - depending on what you want to put in there).

So that giant storage unit looks like it belongs in a preschool, not an office. Can you tell us something about your line of work that you need so much storage? The only stuff that belongs in your office is stuff you need to do your job. I strongly suspect you simply need to get rid of a bunch of stuff. Design your workspace as if it existed in your company’s building. You can add more personality since it’s in your home, but it should still look professional and functional. Like someone said above, remove everything from the room other than the furniture you plan on keeping. That includes everything from the giant storage unit. If you would not load it into your car and take it to your company office, don’t bring it back into the room. Go online and search for pics of “office with 2 desks.” Post some that you like.

I agree that giant storage unit has to go . My hubby and I share a working office and we together do not need as much storage as that holds.It sounds like thta unit holds books so what kind of books ? Is there noother place for a nice looking book shelf . You need to provide a lot more info.Your idea books and this space are in no way alike so please tell us a bit more.

Some thoughts:

--Rehome sofa and storage unit

--Massive decluttering of paperwork and books.

--No love messages, bitty shelves, decor items

--New floor-to-ceiling Ikea type bookshelves against the wall where desk is now.

--Long, low file cabinet or drawer units against wall you face as you come through the door.

--Large art work or two over the file cabinets so you have something nice to look at as you work. Is there a window in this room? Please show all four walls when you post on Houzz. We have no idea if you have a window.
