Idea of the Week: Tiny Office Above the Stairs
Designers find room for a workspace in a clever nook over the basement stairs
While renovating a small 3-bedroom bungalow for a client, Nick Stratichuk of JCS Renovation ran into trouble when trying to find space for an office. The owners were a professional couple who wanted to have a place to work at home from time to time. Space was limited, and the couple didn't want to sacrifice the open and modern layout their remodel had afforded them. Instead of cramming a desk into the master bedroom, the team at JCS Renovation looked for a small office space in higher places.
This little desk nook is located right over a set of stairs leading to the basement. JCS Renovation had removed a wall in what was originally the dining room and found this space just sitting there, so they made use of it. The tiny workspace "reminds me of a tree fort, or a hideaway that we all had as kids," says Stratichuk.
The platform is high enough over the stairs to allow the homeowners to pass underneath and walk down into the basement without any problems. But because of the way the nook was situated, the main floor is only 28" from the platform, so just two steps were needed to get to and from the office.
The rest of the home has a very crisp, white backdrop, so JCS Renovation wanted to warm up this space and make its features stand out. They used black walnut veneers for the woodwork and finished it off with polished steel.
To match the rest of the sleek home and make the stairs look a little more fun, they designed the stairs to hang off of a single steel pipe.
