Weird dehumidifier behavior due to wiring?

Alisande
last year

I recently bought a dehumidifier--not my first, but my first with electronic controls. I set the fan speed at Low, but sometimes it switched to High on its own. I contacted the manufacturer, and the customer service rep said it was not normal for the unit to do that. So I returned it and got the same model--which does the same thing.

Meanwhile, I bought another dehumidifier for a different area the house. This time I bought a larger model from another manufacturer. I tried it out in the same spot--plugged into the same outlet the other two dehumidifiers had used, and discovered that it, too, periodically changes the fan speed from Low to High, and back again.

Could this be caused by some sort of electrical surge? The rest of my electronics behave normally. The dehumidifiers work fine otherwise. I'm getting a little tired of this, and hope I can just keep them. Do you see any risk in that? Thanks!
