Question about an outdoor flood light socket

Hi all. We have a couple flood lights at one corner of the house outside. We noticed one of the lamps of one of them was on the ground. I turned off the power to it and DH went up on a ladder to check it out. He said that the porcelain innards were broken and so we decided to just let it go, since we don't need that light. The other one with it is fine. Is it dangerous to leave that socket open? I suggested electrical tape over the opening, but DH suggested duct tape. I'm thinking duck tape conducts electricity?? (Neither of us are real knowledgeable about electrical things....other than to be careful.). But....we don't need that light so we don't mind just making it safe to leave. Any ideas? Thanks!
