Is Your Garden Listed on Help Me Find?
Comments (81)Sammy........ I am sorry you did not find more nurseries and gardens listed for your state. I think that is an indication that the site is under-utilized in your area or that gardeners in your state are not familiar with the site. HMF does not advertise and is not supported by advertisers, but is supported by site users through premium-memberships, nursery sponsorships and donations. People find out about HMF by word of mouth, mentions in articles as the references used for the article, by nurseries listing their inventories and pointing customers to HMF to find out more about the roses they carry. In my former life, I used to be a construction accountant. Every time I changed jobs, I had to learn a new accounting program. It's the same on the internet. HMF is designed to be a tool for research and an archive of information about roses that are currently in commerce or have gone out of commerce. It takes time to learn how to navigate a new site, but I do think HMF is worth it. Connie is correct, when people list their gardens, it provides more information to other site users about the roses that grow well in their area. When even small nurseries lists their inventories, it helps rose lovers find a source for roses that may not be readily available in your local neighborhood. When site users share their experiences about how a rose performs in their gardens, those COMMENTS are archived with the rose page. All of this information can be found without having to wait for a response from other site users. However, members of the rose community play an important role in answering questions on the Q & A, providing more information about a plant's performance and, yes, catching errors. As nurseries like Vintage close, having those gardens listed on HMF will create a valuable tool to help save the roses that are not easily found in commerce. Comments (39)I have to admit that while I'm great at reading floor plans, site plans confuse me a bit. I know that they matter, so I defer to others on this topic. I do understand the concept of having 12 acres, yet having only one good spot on which to build. I have 40 acres, yet I have one "obvious" spot where the house will be located. Oh, I COULD build in other locations, but it would be more costly (not adjacent to the existing gravel driveway, need to run utilities farther, etc.), but one general area is superior to the others in numerous ways. I don't want to disturb the roughly 50% that's heavily wooded, I don't want to move too close to the little pond in the woods that floods its banks, and I do want to maintain the open field that I rent out to a farmer (this gets me a drastically reduced tax build, and I'm fine with having a corn field behind my house). As for natural light, YES, it matters! Natural light is one of those basics I keep harping upon. Look at some photographs of rooms you like; natural light is most likely the key factor in why these rooms are appealing. To give an example from my current house (though the more examples I give from my sorry old house, the more I wonder why I live here at all), my kitchen /breakfast room /family room faces East. Although I have a covered porch off the back, I get the morning sun in those rooms, and during those morning hours these rooms are at their best. They are MUCH more inviting. The colors are warmer, the room even looks more spacious. By the time we get home from school/work, those prime hours are gone, and although the rooms aren't "dark", they also don't have much life. Colors, window choices, and other things can play into making the most of your natural light, but don't ignore this all-important topic....See MoreHelp me find narrow, functional nightstands
Comments (35)Hi, there! I haven't logged onto the site for ages. We are heading up to the NC house on Friday and since I am still "nightstandless", I thought that I would take a look at my old thread for any new input. I have concluded that I will only find the size and style that I am looking for in French antiques, so I am searching EBay for affordable options...and who knows? - we may get lucky in Asheville. To: Lyne (l mtl) Yes! It is Henredon. I looked at the link you posted and I am certain that it is the same table. I absolutely love this table! It can generously seat six as is and eight are possible, but snug. Since it is an extension table, we have the option of pulling out both (or one) of the leafs that are stacked under the main board, which doubles the size. In these photos, I only pulled out one leaf to comfortably seat eight. We were fortunate to find this table at a furniture warehouse that acquires overstocks and sellouts of high quality furniture and discounts it at least or better than the prices offered in Hickory and High Point (NC furniture mart Mecca). I wanted to mention this because you might find similar dealers in your area. To: flyleft Yes! It is indeed a wood-fired oven. It is from a company in California, Mugnaini Imports. It is a lot of work, but the results of my labor are amazing. Unfortunately, this leads to relentless begging for dinner parties from friends and family. We installed the oven with a remodeling project. I was somewhat ignorant about the oven when our architect suggested it, so I blithely agreed. Knowing what I know now, I would suggest that anyone considering a wood-fired oven investigate a gas starter to make the process of firing and preheating the oven less tedious. Here is a link that might be useful: Mugnaini...See MoreHelp me find a server/buffet
Comments (67)@oldbat2be: too funny, don't you know that I was obsessed with both of those tiles during my kitchen and FR remodel. The circles were too large and I decided to just go with the marble in the kitchen -- then for the FR fireplace I decided to go with a painted surround and using another tile from Ken Mason. I do love them both, and forgot that they came in that orangish color (the same color I think AnnieD was encourage). One issue -- that wall is like 9x15 -- that's over $10K in tile (gulp) at the pricing that I recall. I also looked at wall paper and some other wall materials. ....See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
