Your favorite Moss roses?
Comments (8)I have 2 moss roses in my fairly new garden. Salet which is disease free and has unique coloring I think for a Moss. Treasure Trail is a Paul Barden rose that I purchased last spring from Rogue. Keeping in mind that last summer was the first for a band, what I have to say may be premature...the blooms were about 2" across. The were non-stop blooming all summer. I just couldn't cut them off before they bloomed to give vigor to the plant. Let me try to explain how the blooms looked: Medium pink in the outer edges and middle of the bloom. The center petals are yellow. The effect is a bloom that is packed with petals. They did not turn brown and gushie.... no balling. I dont recall a scent but the foliage smells kind of lemoney. The foliage is real mossy looking. I just moved it to a spot where it will get move sun and be closer to the house so that I can enjoy it more. Highly recommend this rose. Comments (80)Listed by preference, 1. "Auguste Renoir" very nice rich shade of medium pink, very fragrant, of old rose. 2. for bloom form and fragrance, "Liv Tyler" (actress who played Arwen,in Lord of the Rings) syn. "Comtesse de Province", I treasure every single bloom. An uncommon shade of peach-pink bright but not oversaturated. Nice fragrance, of sun ripened peaches. Stingy bloomer but each rose is very pretty. 3. . Yves Piaget. It is too hot in Oakland California to grow peonies, so I console myself with the blooms of Y.P. 4. "Rouge Royale" I much prefer this rose over our "Mr. Lincoln" for a fragrant red, as it is much more productive of bloom. with reservations, even in Calfornia, doesn't open well, 3. "Betty White" Meilland, released by Star roses, I feel this should be on Romantica list. LIke a shrub rose on steroids. 6 months after being planted she is a tall giantess, with towerlike columns of 2 canes with 14-16 blooms on each, and a good number of blooms elsewhere for something that has such big blooms, huge glossy leaves, gigantic blooms, nearly baseball sized, of creamy white and pale pink. very fragrant of old rose and rose cologne. Here it only opens well when we have 4-5 days of 80 degrees plus weather, otherwise the buds rot in the morning sea mist. Haven't done a petal count yet. 5. Toulouse Latrec, fully 1/3rd of the blooms of our plant have vegetal centers, which makes me wonder why Meilland put it on the market, I've seen this trait appear in several T-L"s for sale. "Polka" is nice in arrangements but requires immediate deadheading to bloom well. Thank you Meilland for a modern alternative to H.T.s. Luxrosa...See MoreDo you have a favorite Orange rose?
Comments (30)I'm all about orange roses. I really like my old Tropicana. It's sturdy, reliable, and fragrant, although hubby says the fragrance is "Funeral-homey". Our Voodoo is not what I bargained for, but I'm very happy nonetheless. I was expecting true orangey-orange, but it's more of a hot coral that at first deepens, then fades to apricot. A little disappointed with the way the petal edges crispen before I get the best color, but the smell and upright growth are pretty awesome. Tabasco Cat is a new baby that I put in just a month ago, and I am amazed. First blooms opened yesterday, and the best way I can describe the color is "Electric bloody mary". A very even-toned, perfect spiral, orange red. It is a mini, but it's still beautiful. As with most mini's, there's probably no scent but I didn't try to bend down that far yesterday morning....knees are a little sore....See MoreDo you have any favorite single bloom roses?
Comments (32)If you have a lot of room, you could track down a plant of the 'Trier' x 'Mutabilis' seedling 'Plaisanterie' - it's one rose that totally shows it's heritage of both parents. It's gorgeous, hardier than 'Mutabilis' and also cleaner here in Maryland in terms of disease resistance so far. Definitely more of a climber, but the flowers are exactly the coloring of 'Mutabilis', perhaps even pink/peachier and contained in the petal form of 'Trier' in that charming multiflora manner. I love it. Here is a link that might be useful: Plaisanterie on HMF...See MoreRelated Professionals
