Can you show me your rose beds (or, where do you plant your roses
Comments (34)CI, TZ, SdlM all growing nicely now. I think this will be a good fragrance bed. I put Lion's rose in the back to add beauty and a good leafy background even though it isn't much on scent. I think if the base gets shaded by the others, it won't get disease. There's room to the right of Abe Darby for one more big rose. I think it's going to be Evelyn. Hopefully, it will work some magic for me. This is a good morning sun spot and gets shade in the hottest times of the day. My summer is a little hotter than Hoovb's but maybe it's close enough. I'm going to hope for the best. The only downside to this location is that it will take the full force of the Santa Ana wind from across the street. We are along the Santa Ana river channel and the wind blows strongly through the gap. It seems to be shifting later than Halloween now. I used to call it the Halloween Wind....See MoreYour favorite place to buy new roses?
Comments (7)Holly - I don't have an easy answer for that question. I think there are several really good places. I ordered from several companies for early spring delivery this year, and I ordered some a little later than normal, because there are always roses to be added at the last minute. My first place to reserve roses was Pickering, then they informed me they would not be shipping to the US this year. I had read good things about Palatine, so I gave them a try and have been very pleased, their roses are very vigorous. I also ordered from Edmunds, Witherspoon, Rosemania, Roses Unlimited, Heirloom and Northland. I read the reviews of the different companies on the Garden Watchdog. If they have too many negatives I do not order from them. I think that there are some other really good companies. I tend to prefer grafted roses, but I'm giving own-root a chance and so far I'm pleased. I'll probably be ordering from Pickering again too. I wouldn't say I have a favorite. I think most of the companies we read about on this forum carry a quality product and I don't want to see any more rose nurseries going out of business....See MoreDo you propogate your favorite plants ?
Comments (27)The most fun in the whole world for me is to get a seed to germinate or a cutting to take. Here is a recent picture of my "first ever" hosta propagation. The parent plant was a little thing that I got at the beginning of last summer. By the end of the summer it was big enough to cut off very small pieces with roots; only 1 eye so had to cut pieces. Overjoyed that the parent plant and the 2 babies have just come back up, and after the worst winter in many yrs. I donâÂÂt want to give the name as it is patented; these started off as copies âÂÂfor insurance purposesâ but obviously I no longer have that excuse. Great thread - helps me not feel so crazy....See MoreYour Favorite place to buy rose bushes
Comments (11)Sue: Rather than looking for one place, I took a different tack and looked for specific roses wherever I went. Example: Most Rugosas will do well in Z5, as will most any own-root roses. How can you tell if you don't know? Look for a graft at the base of the plant -- own roots won't have a graft "ball" and will probably do well. Secondly, know that there Are things you can do to help not-so-hardy roses stay hardy in your area. Look for microclimates in your yard that could handle an iffy plant or two. Climbers, particularly. Plant deep -- no sign of the graft should appear above ground. And finally, "local" has become such a misnomer of late. There are very few retail nurseries that actually grow or graft their own roses, or anything else for that matter. Chances are that they got their roses from the very places one can order through on-line. Don't sacrifice quality for keeping the dollars in town. There's plenty of ways to do that, and roses aren't one of them. That said, there's nothing wrong with hitting the $5 table at Ocean State Job Lot for some Hybrid Teas that you know won't make it :-) If you feel like traveling at all, in East Windsor, CT on Route 140 just off Route 91, Revay's still does a lot of their own roses and sells only things that will be hardy to Zone 5. If you're down this way, shoot me an email and I'll be glad to join you for a visit! Good Luck!!! Martie...See Morerose_crazy_da
