Trend away from wooden decks?
Comments (12)I suspect style is a bit of an issue though. I think the OP is right that previously, where you could do either, you'd do a deck. I was recently on the website of a decorative concrete company and they showed a slide show of a waterfront wood deck they'd replaced with a concrete patio. Apropos the comment from LA above, they had to do a LOT of filling before they poured and surfaced the deck. Which brings up one thing that I kind of like to think about with whatever hardscaping I do: reversibility. I like to think that if I ever change my mind about what I've done in my yard, or if a future owner wants something different, it won't be too hard to change it. All my paving stone, flagstone, and rock walls are dry laid, and could be lifted and removed with almost no trace left (partly thanks to not needing a full crush base in my climate, but even that is, I think, malleable). Same with a wood deck - if someone in the future doesn't want it, it's actually easy to remove. Concrete is, of course the dividing line between reversible and irreversible for the average person. So as long as you don't concrete in your flagstones or pavers, you'd keep that advantage. With respect to maintenance, paver patios aren't perfect. They can develop moss, weed, or ant problems. If not well done they can develop sinkage and heave. They can get stained from leaf fall. So I would suggest you do whichever you really prefer, and leave trends to go where they will. Although of course our taste is always affected by trends whether we admit it or not. I really LIKED big shoulder pads in the '80s... Comments (13)Okay..Luvs...You asked for it...I'll share my 'Embarrassing Moment'..cause I could use a laugh myself! We had just arrived in Durango, there were 9 of us traveling cross country doing 500 miles a day. Dh/Me...My BIL/SIL.. and 5 teenagers - 2 cars. We stopped at a gas station to refuel. I jumped out of the car cause I had to go to the B/R REAL BAD (I have weak kidneys)...It was one of these tiny gas stations. When I walked in..there was about half a dozen local men..sitting around, just 'chewing the fat' and watching anyone who came in, as it was their entertainment for the day!! Well, I rushed in asked where the bathroom was..they pointed to the door right where they were sitting. I ran in, pulled down my shorts and started to 'tinkle'...well after a few moments, I realized I hadn't heard anything going into the bowl. The toilet was very low...and that's when I noticed it went all in my shorts!! I was soaked. I panicked..opened the door a crack..to see all these men staring at me..I asked if one of them, would call one of the ladies by the car for me. Well everyone came in, wanting to know what happened to me. I whispered to my SIL, that I needed a new pair of shorts. Everything was packed away tight with the camping gear..and they couldn't take anything out.. After much (to me) unnecessary discussion, and fuss over not finding any change of clothes...They finially decided to give me DH's Denim shirt to wrap around my bottom half. Of course, with the audience of these men sitting there taking everything in. So when I finially stepped out wearing DH's Shirt wrapped around me..looking to get out of there real fast, they started to clap and one said 'Mission Accomplished'!! Everyone started to laugh..I know my face was beet red. So, when I think of Durango...it brings 'Warm & Fuzzy' thoughts..lol jane...See More10 decorating trends you wish would go away, yea or nea??
Comments (39)I'm sorry for your loss, Joyce. Evidently everyone who stages a kitchen for a photo shoot. lol I wasn't including staging in my comment. My comments were for real people with real homes. Yes, fleur de lis and "bling." Like Donna Decorates Dallas, or whatever the name of that show was... ugh. I wonder how much time people with open concept spend cleaning up these areas in order to take pictures they want to post on GW. Rarely do I see pictures of a "lived in" open concept space. lol See my post above - I am a neat freak. The house is neat unless DH is home, but I don't think anyone wants to see his feet on the coffee table. If I needed to pick up for pictures, it would take less than 2 minutes. Neat freak... nicer than saying a bit OCD. Another trend I hope at least evolves is the ALL WHITE everything. OMGeez, yes! Or a room or house all shades of gray. I guess I've never been a trend-follower. Instead of buying the latest thing currently trending, I'd rather have my money in savings. I'm not criticizing anyone who does, that's just my lifestyle. I do like trends, and love seeing all the trendy decorating here on GW. Antlers, taxidermy, etc have always been around. I've had my collection at least 6 years, and only started seeing them scattered in Veranda, Southern Accents and Architectural Digest (and in local antique stores) a few years before. A few years before that, I saw plenty in Europe. I am tired of the white porcelain versions someone mentioned. I agree everyone should save, and if not debt free should be working towards it....See MoreWhere would you go to eat a favorite food from childhood?
Comments (44)some of my fav's still around include hamburgers at Redamaks in New Buffalo MI and yes I do drive to MI from Chicago just for their hamburgers LOL. We used to have a summer place in New Buffalo MI and that place is THE place to go for lunch & dinner. I still always visit Teibels in Schereville IN when in NW IN seeing friends, I always have the Walleye grilled. My DH makes us stop at Zel's for barbeque sandwiches & plain pulled pork in Hammond IN and Schoops for hamburgers - he won't drive to MI LOL. House of Pizza in Hammond IN when I'm in the mood for square cut, thin pizza. A few fav's long gone include Puntillo's Restaurant, growing up we used to eat fish (either lake perch or breaded cod) there every Friday, they closed up in the mid 80's :-( Ralphs Pizza we used to get pizza delivered on Sat nite or Sundays for Cubs or Bears games when I was little. There was also an awesome DQ around the corner from my house, we used to bug my dad to walk over there and get us a bag of dilly bars in the summer, when we were too little to go by ourselves LOL. Food was very different back then, I rarely find a place to go out to eat that is as good as the restaurants I grew up with :-( ~ liz...See Moreplllog
