I'd Forgotten We Were Going Away This Weekend :~(

Did I get a big shock this morning! I was thinking that our Colorado ski trip over President's Day Weekend was the weekend of the 21st, NOT this weekend! This is Valentines Day Weekend, NOT President's Day Weekend . . . or at least in my mind it was!

So, imagine the start I got this morning when DH mentioned that we should probably start packing for it tomorrow. We leave Friday afternoon and get back Monday evening. Durango is a beautiful little resort town that we know and love, and I feel very ungrateful that I'm wishing we weren't going, but I am. I had a wonderful V'Day planned for us here, topped off with a special dinner that night using my new transferware. It almost feels like a waste to be decorating for it, as our house/dog sitter won't appreciate it. Dan's our neighbor's son and in his last year of college. We've known him since he was in first grade and he's a good guy, but I'm not very confident that he'll be able to keep Ronin from eating my decs!

I don't ski anymore, due to a bad ski accident some years ago, but I was planning on doing a bit of shopping in town . . . OK, a lot of shopping while DH and DD are skiing. Hopefully I can find some good bargains to bring back.

Sorry that I'm rambling, but this trip just came up way too quickly and I am so not ready for it! You know, I woke up this morning dreaming of tablescapes . . . this truly is a disease ;^P

How funny, Lynn. We can tell you are really "into" dishes and tablescapes now! You could do your pretty table after you get back and just say it's for your "sweeties", doesn't have to be just on Valentine's day. No matter when you do it, remember to snap pics to share with us.

My DIL has an Aunt who moved to Durango from So. Ca., they really like it, but it has been fun hearing her emails about the snow. The first ones were about how beautiful it was, and lately they've been more on the "well, we got dumped on again last night and have to clear the driveway again" vein! LOL Hope you and your family have a great time. ;o)

Have a great time Lynn.. I envy you, as it sounds like great plans. I was in Durango many years ago, camping cross country..although, when I remember Durango..I also remember a Very embarrassing moment for me as well!! But then that's another story..lol

My son brought home a weenie dog like that. They were going to take her to the pound and he had to save her. She's a minature and so smart. If you point your finger at her and go "Pow Pow" she falls down and plays dead. Jolana, how cute. I don't think he likes the chair though. lol

Read all the fine print on the credit card insurance coverage before you rely on it - I've seen some that won't cover rentals that last for more than 30 days. I don't know why (I would think a rental is a rental), but I've seen that limitation on more than one credit card. Also, a lot of them will only pay after you file a claim with your regular insurance company. The coverage through your credit card can be handy, but it's worth reading the fine print, especially since you'll be renting for a long time.

Hi Folks - appreciate the feedback. Couple notes: LiveWire, time will tell but I disagree on the playroom. We have an 18th month old and a 21 day old, and hope to have several more. That could mean we have toddlers for the next 5-6 years. Having a designated safe area within view of heavily used living areas seems pretty logical. Showplace - two things: 1) How about a full height trash by the clean-up sink (window) and a 10" high wastebasket in a 12" drawer on the prep island? Someone on another forum posted this idea, and it seems to make sense since a prep wastebasket would be for trimmings and other organic stuff that needs to go out frequently... 2) I think I get what you're talking about with the pantry idea, but do you happen to have a link you might point me to? Joanie: good points. We actually have a bonus room upstairs that will serve as the playroom when the kids get a bit older. At some point the playroom on the first floor will become an office. Til then we expect that most of the people we'll have over for dinner will also have kids of similar ages to ours, so our hope is that we can let the kids do their thing in the playroom or mingle in and out of the dining room/playroom while the parents enjoy dinner and some wine... Think that's realistic? KathyNY - to the right of the diagonal DW is our trash in this design. Perhaps we swap the placement of those two so it goes DW, sink, trash, DW. That would create a little more standing room b/t sink and DW....??? Sounds like we have some thinking/work to do, so I welcome additional comments!

One the secretaries in my office is totally blind. She is just amazing. I work in NYC and she takes 3 different subways to get to work. She doesn't hesitate to ask for help if she needs it, but that is rare. She and I both loved spinach pies from a restaurant nearby and whenever I went there I'd bring her one. One day she asked how to get to the restaurant and I gave her the directions (she did not want anyone to accompany her). A short time later, she was back with her spinach pie! She said she got there all by herself and when she got right to the door someone asked her what she was looking for and she said the name of the restaurant and they guy said you've found it and opened the door for her! She went to a camp for the blind when she was a child, actually she still goes some years.

Have fun Lynne...my family is going skiing this weekend in Vt.
I haven't gone in years! My son started when he was 4 and loves it. He went to Utah for the weekend the beginning of the month...
I get tired just thinking of all the packing up he has to do to take 3 little ones skiing...

Lynn, of course, we "feel" your pain at not being able to do your Valentine tablescape using your new dishes but like Luvs says, just do it later on...even next wknd. It is never too late to show love to others...and of course, we never tire of seeing a belated themed table setting!

Sorry that you can't ski anymore. I would hate that even more! DH and I just went skiing after I got off work today. We live just 10 minutes away from an up & coming major ski resort. It is wonderful to be that close to the tremendous views and breathtaking scenery we get to experience when up there. Hope the shopping you get to do makes up for your missing out on hitting the slopes.

Okay..Luvs...You asked for it...I'll share my 'Embarrassing Moment'..cause I could use a laugh myself!
We had just arrived in Durango, there were 9 of us traveling cross country doing 500 miles a day. Dh/Me...My BIL/SIL.. and 5 teenagers - 2 cars. We stopped at a gas station to refuel. I jumped out of the car cause I had to go to the B/R REAL BAD (I have weak kidneys)...It was one of these tiny gas stations. When I walked in..there was about half a dozen local men..sitting around, just 'chewing the fat' and watching anyone who came in, as it was their entertainment for the day!! Well, I rushed in asked where the bathroom was..they pointed to the door right where they were sitting. I ran in, pulled down my shorts and started to 'tinkle'...well after a few moments, I realized I hadn't heard anything going into the bowl.
The toilet was very low...and that's when I noticed it went all in my shorts!! I was soaked. I panicked..opened the door a crack..to see all these men staring at me..I asked if one of them, would call one of the ladies by the car for me. Well everyone came in, wanting to know what happened to me. I whispered to my SIL, that I needed a new pair of shorts. Everything was packed away tight with the camping gear..and they couldn't take anything out.. After much (to me) unnecessary discussion, and fuss over not finding any change of clothes...They finially decided to give me DH's Denim shirt to wrap around my bottom half. Of course, with the audience of these men sitting there taking everything in. So when I finially stepped out wearing DH's Shirt wrapped around me..looking to get out of there real fast, they started to clap and one said 'Mission Accomplished'!!
Everyone started to laugh..I know my face was beet red.
So, when I think of Durango...it brings 'Warm & Fuzzy' thoughts..lol

I'd probably have tried crawling out the bathroom window.

Oh Lord, Jane, I can so relate. Had a similar incident while taking my visiting sisters to see the beach on a cool day in March and the combination of them making me laugh hard and the water swirling around my legs--well, you know the rest! At least we can laugh about it now, right? ;o)

Those guys are probably still telling that story! Hopefully, your family have stopped bringing it up at every family get together by now! Luvs

Jane, isn't it funny how life's "most-embarrassing-I-will-never-get-over-this" moments turn out to be something we can not only laugh about later but tell others too. Thanks for sharing that "moment" in your life, it was great for a chuckle! I'm sure we can all relate to it in one way or another!

Ladies...glad you enjoyed that moment and some of you can relate. Problem with me..being I have those weak kidneys..since a kid, this has happened to me on more than one occasion. Some, I hate to admit, even more hilarious than this. I'm afraid, the topic of my leaving 'my markings' has become a family pastime for 'remember when' conversations!!

OMG, Jane, how embarrassing!

Gosh I wish some of you were going to be in Durango, too, this weekend! It would be such fun to meet up for lunch at the beautiful, old Strater Hotel and some shopping. Look at this pic of it; isn't it beautiful?

We love eating lunch there, but prefer the views and big, modern rooms (& bathroom!) at the Doubletree. We always get the top floor room at the (close)end there, where we can sit on our balcony and enjoy the river views.

Anyhoo, there's tons of shops in Durango, so I plan on wandering through most of them this weekend, looking for fun bargains to top my tables with while DH and DD ski.

I'm trying to come up with something for a President's Day dinner tonight, although being a great-grandniece of Lincoln, I kind of ignore the rest of them ;^P . More of a Uncle Abraham's birthday party, I guess. My uncle is/would have been 200 years old today . . . talk about one incredible human being!
