Tree house with deck · More Info

Great Job! We mainly do outdoor playsets, but this is a playset with a deck attached we recently installed.

Your ledger and piers are installed incorrectly.

3-1/2” lag screws are inadequate to attached the ledger to the house. 6” lag screws are required.

Further, when attaching the ledger and not removing the siding, in addition to the drip edge, you need to use spacers made of a synthetic material between the siding and the ledger. The other option would have been to remove the siding where the ledger attaches to the house and then add a layer of self-sealing membrane to the house before attaching the ledger. As it is, moisture will find its way between the ledger and siding and cause both to rot.

Lastly, your piers do not extend below the frost line and are vulnerable to heaving from moisture in the soil expanding as it freezes. This creates a lever action where the ledger is attached to the house and can cause damage to the house’s structure.

I'm wanting to build a deck on the front of my house. The ledger board will be bolted thru brick. Any suggestions??
