Comments (60)Being that I'm hand screened every time I fly I would agree a lot of the screening process is nonsense. Steps that are SOOOO important at one airport are completely skipped at another. Some level of screening is useful to prevent weapons, etc. from going on planes but taking your shoes off and putting your liquids in a baggie is NOT preventing terrorists from getting on planes with explosives. It's a waste of time and money. In my opinion one reason we're being subjected to being searched without cause and the like is because we're far too politically correct in how we are defending this country against terrorism. The "rights" of the enemy are so important we're rendered completely ineffective in fighting the terrorist enemy. We follow the old rules of war when the war has changed entirely. We give non-citizen suspected terrorists the rights of citizens instead of handling them like they were suspected war criminals. We pussyfoot around everyone for fear of offending somebody because of their ethnicity, religion or country of origin. Meanwhile terrorists have to be laughing their butts off because they have us completely figured out and we are clueless and powerless. We're running around like a chicken with its head cutoff spending money on ineffective security measures and ever more eroding our freedoms. I think the enemy is winning big time and most people don't even recognize it....See MoreBean Cuisine
Comments (37)I know I'm kind of late to the party, but this thread continues to be timely, IMHO. Especailly for people who are interested in cutting down on food costs. I eat beans almost every day. Last week I had meat-eating company and my weekly grocery bill was $150.00. This week, no meat, $65.00. Now some of the stuff I bought the week before is lasting until now, but my bill is consistently below 100 bucks when I don't buy meat. (Plus do a whole lot of other cost cutting measures that I won't go into here). And the only meat I did buy was chicken and splurging on scallops, so it doesn't take much. So, for all you folks who are trying to be frugal--at the very least, use meat and fresh vegetables as condiments, and strech your dollars with beans and grains! Frankly I love beans and never miss the meat. However, I don't have a touch tummy and am rarely bothered by bean gas. However, I think my secret is never eat a lot of beans late in the day. Also, keep the dishes light. A late, rich bean dinner scarfed down in a hurry is a recipe for intestinal disaster. Here are some summer bean salads I really enjoy. Marinated Blackeyed Peas (4 servings) 1 can blackeyed peas 1 rib celery - chopped 1TBLSP finely chopped onion (I like red in salads) 1 TBLSP olive oil or other salad oil 1 TBLSP vinegar 1 TBLSP mayo 1/4 tsp. salt (I use lemon pepper here) dash cayenne 1 ripe tomato Drain and rinse peas, add chopped stuff except tomato. Combine dressing ingredients and mix with salad. Chill several hours and serve with tomato on lettuce cups. Can be doubled to serve for a crowd. Can add some green or red pepper, and sub a scallion for the onion. Can add more dressing if it seems bland. Totu "Tuna" and White Bean Salad (This may be from "Vegetarian Times" magazine) 8 servings 2 cups cooked cannellini beans 8 oz. baked marinated tofu, italian style (If you can't get this in your grocery, follow my instructions on the vegan thread, or google how to do it, or search this forum as I've posted instructions before.) 1/3 cup chopped black olives, preferrably cured (I LOVE kalamatta, that's what I use) 1/2 cup sliced red onion 2 large celery stalks (diced) 1/4 cup fresh parsley 2 TBLSP EVOO Juice of 1/2-1 lemon fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste Combine ingredients and allow to marinate for an hour. Can add more dressing if if seems to need it, it's a matter of your taste and diet. Serve over a bed of lettuce. If you absolutely hate tofu, you can sub a can of actual tuna for the tofu. This is a traditional italian/french type dish. You can also make it with garbanzo beans....See MoreAny German Cuisine Experts out There?
Comments (42)Ok, thanks. I did see that one or 2 of the above posters put them in a skillet with butter for a minute or 2, but didn't think that would actually make them crispy. Not that they have to be crispy, I was just wondering what jxbrown meant by crispy. I would try it again, as between my husband, my son & I we did eat it all. I used a box grater & found it to be a messy process. Then I saw islay corbel's picture above & it gave me an idea - I have a top chips chip maker - it is supposed to be used to make potato chips in the microwave. My son tried it once & it didn't work very well, but it looks alot like the picture above, except some of the holes are bigger in the chips maker and the chips maker is more lke a rubber material, but I think I'll try it next time anyway. Another thing is I was serving it with leftover pork & didn't have any gravy, which I think is key. I'm actually 1/4 German myself, but my mom didn't really cook German food & neither she nor my Gradma had ever made saubraten or spaetzle, so I'm proud of myself for giving them both a try!...See More10 best things you ever put in your mouth.
Comments (116)I also wonder about a lot of people who posted on this thread that I have not heard from in many years, but I also noticed that I never posted on this thread, and I can't imagine why. Anyway, I can try to make a list now. I'll number them, but this is just the order in which they come to my mind. 1. seafood gumbo 2. king crab legs (I don't care for lobster and much prefer crab) 3. cherimoya / guanabana (They are very similar to me.) 4. fried okra 5. fried alligator tail 6. fresh coconut or mamey ice cream (my two favorite flavors) 7. chocolate hazelnut Bavarian cream pie 8. chocolate turtles, with caramel made with cream instead of milk 9. Eggplant Parmigiana 10. dragon fruit / pitaya, especially in juice form I am also surprised at how many sweet items I named, since I do not eat many sweets, but maybe that is why they made my list. I have not eaten any of the things on my list in the past month😢, but I hope that will change soon. I don't eat candy as a rule, but it still has to make my list. As an honorable mention, I would like to add the chocolate croissants I got at a French bakery in Copacabana. I especially liked that bakery for breakfast because I could order in French instead of Portuguese....See More- 7 years ago
