Hybrid Cars
Comments (92)Hi Again. Here in the aftermarket many of the Hybrid vehicles are just now starting to show up for regular servicing now that many have had their warranties expire. First I have sold NO HV Battery assemblies. If the battery, the inverter, and especially the Prius transaxle has failed people simply trade the car in. I'm still the only shop in the county that has had formal training on these cars, and has invested in the factory scan tools to service them, as well as the rest of each manufactures fleet. Your lost key fob? I could have handled that, but otherwise you would have a 20+ mile one way trip to the nearest dealer. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2006/10/prius_mileage_1.html Just google "real prius" and you will quickly see a google drop down list that suggests gas mileage. That link above was the first one that came up. Compare that number he quotes to the fact that my 2007 Mustang GT Convertible California Special consistently gets 29mpg with the top down on the highway. Next week I'll be out of town instructing a basic Hybrid class for a well know franchise based chain store. Most of those shops don't allow their techs to get involved with anything more than tires, alignments (one of the special things I have to teach with these cars) and basic fluid services. Anything else and the cars typically require the O.E. scan tool and only the dealers *(mandatory for them), and top shops like mine have stepped up and made the investment in those. Come back in about two years and we will see just how big of an impact these cars are having when the inevitable repairs start multiplying....See MoreExtend new car, rust proofing and car loan insurance ...
Comments (6)These are not "shady" deals, but I think that all 3 favor the dealership, and not the auto owner. 1. Extend the warranty from 5 to 7 years for $1480 and get the money back if no claims. This is a free loan of $1480 to the dealer for 7 years and it probably does not cover much, maybe just the drive train. These parts are already warranteed for 5 years. What happens if the dealership changes hand, goes out of business, or re-incorporates before the 7 years is up? These days, auto dealerships are very fluid and a long term, fixed business arrangement for 7 years is more rare than new dealerships. Do you thnik you will own this vehicle for 7 years? What happens to your money if you replace this vehicle within 5 years? 2. Rust proofig for $848 or more option at $1248. The time to add rust proofing to a vehicle is when it is new and the surfaces are clean. This one is a maybe. Some sources say it is wasted money. It all depends on what is done. If it merely duplicates the coatings already placed by the manufacturer, it is not very helpful. It may offer some protection if you live on a gravel road where the undercarraige gets pelted with stones on a regular basis. If they add coatings to the interior of the doors, be careful here. Too much in the wrong place can gum up the workings of electric door locks; It can plug door drains. If you live in the "rust belt" where road salts are used extensively, it may some added value. This one is a judgement call. 3. Accident and health insurance. This is assurance (to the dealer) that you'll have cash to pay off the loan in case of debilitating accident or sickness to you. Very likely, it will be written to the effect that in case of accident or illiness, the car loan is the first item to be satisfied. If you are employed, have adequate health and life insurance, this is not needed. For a long trerm loan, say 5 years, the dealer (and loan agency) is very anxious to make sure that the loan covered....See More"Just looking" and other nonsense
Comments (39)In 2005, after my FiL moved in with us after the death of my MiL, we decided that we could afford to move. We really needed a second bathroom with an advanced elder living with us. What we learned is that we fuel each other in the "gotta see everything" frenzy. It was our first house-hunting as a couple, since I was already a homeowner when we met. It wasn't so much "Falling in Love" with a home that got us in trouble, it was the feeling of needing to read the listing for all the homes that met our objectives, to see the ones that we had an interest in, and to not miss out on a chance to bid on any of them if we wanted to do so. It became obsessive. Him upstairs on his desktop computer, me downstairs on my laptop, hollering back and forth about the listings. I expected him to be a moderating force for me, but he really made me worse. We found a nice home with a finished basement for him and an in-ground pool for me and wrote an offer. There was a second offer, and after a weekend of thinking that we had prevailed, we learned that the seller's agent had misunderstood and that the seller had signed the other offer. It turns out that this was a good thing for us for a couple of reasons. Then we wrote an offer on a house that had good and bad points. Next morning I was on the phone to the city to see if my realtor was right that I could put up a privacy fence, or if I had read the ordinance correctly and I could not put up a privacy fence. I was right. Called realtor, and was able to stop her before she tendered our offer. When we saw the back yard of the house we live in now,(before going in to tour) we got excited. Wow, perfect yard for our dogs, very private with the hedges. Once inside, loved the size of the MBR, the Eat-in Kitchen. It was almost Love, definitely was "Make An Offer!" I am with BumbleBeez about the hunt and the kill. I get into an intense focus where finding the home is all I want to do. Once I find it, gotta have it. No bargaining for me, I have to offer pretty much the asking price or I am afraid I will lose it. Same thing happened a few months ago when we decided it was time to replace my 10 year-old car. Looked every day until we found what we wanted. Researched price, found it competitive, offered asking price (but did insist on one repair). We are not good shoppers. I do not know if we could walk away from a big purchase if we needed to do so because of a problem....See MoreCar alarm keeps going off by itself
Comments (28)My Mazda alarm was going off randomly until I changed the key fob battery. Also found out that if you fail to turn the Bluetooth in your car off (by changing the source to radio before you turn off your ignition), then the Bluetooth can still somehow "speak to" or sense your key fob and also drains on your key fob and possibly your car battery so that your car won't start even though your car battery later checks out to be just fine. So replace the key fob battery and start turning off your car Bluetooth unless unless you want your car alarm system to cause your car to think a thief is trying to start it - when the only reason it won't start is because the fob battery is running down because the Bluetooth talks all the time....See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
