Comments (20)I use a small "sugar pumpkin". They are small orange pumpkins. I've found the easiest way to butcher these guys is to plop them in the oven on 225 for about 2 hours, whole on a baking sheet. Take them out and they will fall apart. Just scoop out the seeds and guts, put the seeds in a strainer. Toss the guts in the compost container. Slide the meat off the skin with fingers into your bowl and mush it up. It's so easy! After all these years of trying to skin squash and pumpkin raw and nearly cutting my fingers off!! The seeds I just swirl around with water and the pulp comes off. I then toss with a teaspoon or two of a toasted peanut or sesame oil and a little salt. Put back in the oven on 225 for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. If I'm waiting for the oven I might soak seeds in salt water for an hour or two. I strain my pumpkin meat unless making soup because it's a little wetter than from the can....See MoreQuestion about pie pumpkins
Comments (4)The big differences are that "pie" pumpkins tend to be denser and sweeter. The big jack-o-lantern types have much higher water contents and muted flavor. You can certainly do it though with any pumpkin (or squash for that matter). Essentially, a pumpkin pie is simply a custard pie with pumpkin puree added to the custard....See MorePie pumpkins: When to lower Nitrogen, increase P & K
Comments (1)I would assume the answer is when you want them to stop growing and focus on fruiting... which should def be now I think. I gave my pumpkins and other cucurbits only balanced fertilizer and they did fine. Plenty of growth and lots of fruit. I don't think it matters much. Reading your post, I think you are going overboard on various fertilizers for a first time gardener. I would keep it simple unless you have a specific issue. But I know container gardening is more challenging for this and I have no experience.. not sure I have heard of container pumpkins.
