Pomegranate treats? Sukkot?

When I was a kid, one of the local bakeries had a certain cookie they only made in the early Fall. They were simple cookies with a dot of hard icing in a circle of chocolate. We loved them. My mother would buy them for Sukkot--one of the majoy Jewish holidays other people don't know about (whereas everybody has at least heard of Hanukkah, which is a minor holiday). It's the harvest, and we make harvest homes to live in outside. And lots of company and going to their homes and nice things to eat. I wouldn't even try to make Sukkot cookies. They're too specific to get wrong, but my group will be meeting and I'd like to make a treat.

Pomegranates work well, but the only thing I've made with them is pink icing for Valentine's Day. :) It could just be something Fall Harvesty,

Any recipes or ideas? It should be portionable and a snack or treat rather than a food that's part of a meal.

Date Cookies

Spicy cookies with chewy dates. The dates sweeten these cookies without going overboard.

Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 ⅓ cups white sugar
- 3 eggs
- 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 teaspoons water
- 1 ½ cups chopped pitted dates
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Directions
1. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition. Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves; gradually stir into creamed mixture. Combine water and dates; stir into dough along with chopped pecans. Cover and chill for 1 hour.
2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheets.
3. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

That sounds good! And I might have a large thing of dates. I might even have pecans. It sounds nicely Fall harvesty.

Thanks for the advice Changsong. I will keep them in their Monarch Planting bands for a couple months, then put the whole band into a larger container (With Al's Gritty Mix) and move them into a shady North Facing spot for them to get used to being outside. It hasn't even been a month, but the variety Palermo has almost 100% leafed, and some have branches. Wonderful is slower, but now I see at least 4 with leaves. Those outside haven't popped up yet, but the grapevines I planted outside have just started peeking their little heads out of the soil, so I expect the Poms to follow. Last year I bought a pom from Gurneys, put it in a pot in morning sun on the vineyard drip system, and it is doing fine. I might put some of these in the same spot. The drip system is key to keeping them hydrated for sure. It's probably best to plant them in their true home sometime in the winter, so they get established in Spring and get ready for the heat. Not sure about this, but I'm hoping the two varieties will pollinate each other? I think they self pollinate, but it sure can't hurt!

How often do your fertlize? You should fertilize twice a year, once in the fall after the fruit is harvested and again in the spring before it starts to flower. I followed that schedule last year and got over a dozen poms this year.

Zone 7/LI, NY, As I said above, the Dwarf Pomegranate IS HARDY (in the GROUND..., not in a pot left outside), in the NYC vicinity in Zone 7 (even down to 6B..., especially with good microclimate). The variety/cultivar of pomegranate known as Russian Pomegranate is also cold hardy to Zone 7 (but I have not tried that one...YET!) My dwarf has seen 0 Degrees and been buried in snow drifts! Again, I have no experience with the NON-DWARFS in my area (Greater NYC/NY Metro Area/Zone 7).

People do consume them here, although a neighbor has a dwarf variety that makes ridiculous tiny poms--I assume that one is just ornamental. :) Petaluma is a little bit more inland. SF is exposed on the ocean and famously foggy, chilly, and gray during the growing season. Petaluma might get a little colder in the winter (I'm not sure about this) but summers are much nicer. TV weather reporters in the area usually have 3 forecasts--one for the coast, one for cities on the bay, and one for the surrounding areas. There's usually a large difference between them even though they're pretty close together.
