@rstanjon: Books do make a room. You probably will have to pare down (I got rid of a thousand books when I moved from my "mansion" to my cottage), but don't lose the books you love or may read or reference again. A living room, dining area (or room), bedroom or "extra" room can double as a library. Bookshelves are only about 12" deep. Allow yourself about 18" of walking space in front of them for access, & place your other furniture in front of them.

Here's a pic of my sofa in front of a bookcase I built years ago. Because the walls of the cottage are stone, I ripped off the back of the bookcase (& beefed up its structure as the back was structural) to let the stone wall show. I have a low wall of library bookcases in the same room.

I know I will most likely need to downsize at some point in my life, so I am down sizing my library now. Books I have no desire to read again can just go, and those that I want to read again are being switched out with ebooks, starting with some of my older paperbacks that are literally falling apart. I'll need to do a final purge, but it will be easier if I make it an ongoing process starting now.

I live in approx 600 sq feet... it's a nightmare and there is 3 of us! Unlike the drawing above "where do I store stuff" there is no garage, basement or attic. Everything is difficult, there is no privacy, no peace, no storage...It just forces you to either be dirty and have piles of junk sitting around or be bored because you have no space for hobbies. I have my junk piles outside.
