What other squashes are good for 'pumpkin' pie?
Comments (14)I really prefer kabocha squash. I like to use the orange ones but I don't think the outside color really makes much of a difference really. The flesh is sweet, dry and smooth. But I've read they need to be matured off the vine. Basically wait a month or two before using them so they can become more sweet. I don't know about that from experience though, I've not had a kabocha that wasn't sweet and smooth. The flesh is also a nice orange color for pies. It shouldn't matter what color the pie is, just that it tastes good but sometimes a nice color just makes the pie end up looking more traditional. To open a kabocha is not easy though. I've found the best way (and the way recommended to me by "Gene the Pumpkin Man", the first person who recommended these to me for pies) is to drop the squash onto the cement outside. Or in some cases you might have to throw it on the ground hard to break it open. I don't do this indoors because I worry for my floor. These babies are tough but oh so tasty. ~Cindy...See MorePumpkin Therapy for intestinal issues
Comments (25)Jas's tests came out negative for Giardia and T. foetus, though it's no indication that he isn't infected (cysts are shed intermittently, and if the loosies continue, we have to keep testing samples every three days). But ... the loosies are gone! Both Jas and Coco love cooked red pumpkin - and shamelessly beg for more LOL. The BM look normal now, after just 2-3 days of pumpkin therapy. Thanks a bunch again Lisa for the info! pmk, Jas's problem has been going on for more than 5 months now (started with Giardia, that got cured, but there's always been blood and mucus in his mostly-runny stool). The vet said to continue feeding the kittens pumpkin for some time and gradually reduce the amount, and start feeding normal kitten food again, small quantities at a time mixed with chicken and rice so their tummies get used to it. I'll try some minced beef if they get bored of chicken n rice everyday (though it seems like they'd eat anything with pumpkin mixed in!). Good luck with your kitty, hope the potty dept stays good :) It's been trial and error here too, and I don't know what I would've done if Lisa hadn't shared Odessa's experience with us. Lisa, if/when you meet the receptionist again, please thank her for us :) I'm just hoping this problem gets cleared up once and for all! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed ... Comments (13)Love squash, all types. I have 8 squash sitting on my kitchen counter now, 4 different types. So much cheaper to buy at the farm stands than at a grocery store where they sell by the pound. 99 cents for a butternut squash is much better than paying over $1 a pound. A good improvement for pumpkin pie is a splash of rum or as my friend just used a splash of vodka in her pie filling. Costco was selling their huge pumpkin pies for $5.95 last week for our Thanksgiving. I bought one and shared it with the neighbours. I bake my squash most of the time cut in half in the oven with butter and brown sugar, microwave whole and mash it with cinnamon or chili powder. Spaghetti squash just butter and pepper or a sprinkle of fresh grated parm or romano cheese. Love squash soup....See MorePumpkin Pie
Comments (26)" You have to chill it after it is baked to make it set." Lars, I've never in my life had to chill a pumpkin pie to make it set. They are put on racks on the counter until serving time, and they are always 'set', never had one 'run'. So I'm curious about your recipe. I use the one on the Libby's can of pumpkin (NOT the pumpkin pie filling!), may I ask what your recipe is? Rusty...See More- 15 years ago
