Let's face it, some of us get tired of cooking, some get tired of the food we do cook, and some of us just get tired. Maybe it's the thing you eat when you're far from home, or the thing you bring home when you're tired. Perhaps it's the favorite "cheat" food which isn't particularly nutritious, or the treat food which makes you happy. We're not talking about high end delicacies here--this is quick, easy, delightful...

We tend to order or pickup indian or chinese food (or dine-in), as they tend to be more complex and varied to make (in terms of many different dishes, vs. just one or two when I cook them), and most importantly, hold up well during transport or reheating (except for things like dumplings). Less frequently, a local taqueria, pizza or pita shop. In France, we take home a rotisserie chicken, pizza, sandwiches (pan bagnat, bahn mi, foccacia) or lebanese. There are a crazy number of options within walking distance.

Mine will always be pizza...yeasty dough, no tomato sauce, cheese, onions, bell peppers and mushrooms. Also, I recently discovered a small chain restaurant that makes terrific fish tacos with a delicious slaw. It's a good thing it's not in my immediate neighborhood as I would be tempted to eat there at least once per week.

My favorite 5 1.'The Florentine' which is the Old Rose garden at Morcom Amphiteatre of Roses' on the corner of Olive Street and Oakland Ave. in Oakland, California. Walk down the long staircase and look at the dates of introduction on the signs, inside the oval stone-walled area. If the dates are between 1804 through the late 1900's you're in the right place.. I love this park because in summer I enjoy walking on the outer paths where it is green and leafy with a few acres of tall trees..In early spring the Banksiae are in bloom among the trees, and also the wild roses we got from Miriam Wilkins estate. There is a gigantic rose that has been there for more than a decade, that I think must be R. brunonii and a couple R. moschata planted by the Noisettes. There are c. 2 dozen different cultivars of Pernetiana roses, and Tea and Chinas. a huge Catos Cluster' which on Manettii has grown to be more than 18 feet tall. It's a great place to ramble.. There are two modern rose gardens, too and a reflecting pool. Because by city law, the roses cannot be sprayed with anything, I go there to get cuttings from some of the healthier roses for our area... with my permission slip on hand. 2. Vintage gardens home garden. My idea of heaven, especially the south side of the house garden where two 25'+ tall 'Long John Silver' rosebushes bloom showing huge silvery white powder puff like roses, past those are many of the once blooming roses including 'The Garland' which are planted in a lush grassy area planted with other bushes, purple clematis, foxglove, increasing the beauty to a crescendo. 3. San Jose Heritage Rose garden. I do wish it had a shaded area with seats, and a drinking fountain and closer bathroom facilities for the aged, and the infirm. I've gotten heat exhaustion there more than once. 4.Lovely Luanne has a beautiful rose garden. Her yearly "whiffing event" is coming up soon. We've been neighbors for several years, in Oakland, and now in Richmond, California.. It takes a beautiful heart to grow beautiful roses...which she does.. 5. The Berkeley Botanical Garden' in California. I love their R. odorata and apothecary roses, and R. arvensis all planted near the Chinese Medicinal garden where R. rugosa and R. chinensis spontaneaa (sp?) are growing. Their R. odorata is covered with hundreds of large saucer like golden-yellow blossoms and blooms between March and April depending on how warm or cold its' been. It was more than 30 feet tall the last time I ooohed and ahhheed over it. I've been a tiny bit miffed at the folks who run that garden for their planting vivid red Florabundas ("for color") in their Old Rose Garden as I think it misleads the public. Theres' not a single Gallica in the Old Rose Garden and many of them, with the Hybrid Chinas would bloom well up on the hills where at least some frost and winter chill comes in winter. Lux.

Tlbean, now I know the tree you are talking about. I've seen them at biltmore estate and thought about planting one, but I would rather buy locally than mail order. I guess top on my list of redbuds would be Cercis Canadensis 'Floating Clouds', it's a really nice variegated cultivar. I'm also on look out for 'rising sun', 'merlot', and 'ruby falls'.

hummersteve: I can imagine the worms won't take to baked potatoes leavings right away. I don't bake my potatoes but may I suggest you "age" your baked potato leavings in a container with some liquid. Once it's mushy, I'm sure the worms will be all over it. I micro-waved potato peels (I know, waste of energy) for a few minutes and then let them sit for about a week or so before adding to the worm bin.

Besides W.S. 2000 and Radio times, my next top 5 Austins among 34 Austin as own roots are: Evelyn always healthy as 12th-year own root bought from Chamblee's nursery in TX, is the top 5 scents among my 150+ fragrant own root roses: Below bouquet has Carding Mill on left, Golden Cel. as yellow, and Evelyn as the bottom large bloom: Carding Mill is a constant bloomer as 11th-year own root, but has blackspots in late fall. I have to top it with biochar at pH 8.6 for health plus to retain its apricot color: Carding Mill is apricot in my alkaline clay, gets more apricot with alkaline tap water. It blooms well in hot & dry, pic. below was taken at over 90 F: The Dark Lady as 8th-year own root blooms constantly with an old rose wafting scent, its bloom is largest at 4" across like Evelyn. I choose the Dark Lady over Munstead Wood since it lasts longer in the vase, with higher quality scent (pleasant old rose). Dark Lady is compact as 8th-year own root at 2.5' x 2.5'. It has Rugosa heritage so it's drought tolerant. It consumes less water than Munstead Wood. Today 9/13/22 I have more rootings of Carding Mill, Evelyn, the Dark Lady in case anyone is interested. No virus on them. I ship out rootings since they can't survive my zone 5a winter.

Take away is rare in our house. Maybe twice or three times a year and almost always Indian or Thai. Occasionally Turkish or Chinese. Never pizza. If we eat it we do so in the restaurant so it's straight out of the oven.

It would have to be teriyaki chicken from a restaurant, but I'm more likely to buy something easy from Trader Joe's, like Mandarin Orange Chicken, or Chicken Soup Dumplings, or their Sous Vide Chicken Thighs and a ready made salad.

Take away here is zero. I have a dish we call tired chicken. It's a chicken thigh seasoned, sprinkled with garlic and parsley 5 mins before the end of cooking. Cook until skin crispy and serve with oven chips. Simples! LOL

We do take-out often on Friday nights. Usually Mexican, Italian, Chinese or Mediterranean. All from small, close by places we like. Far from fancy but very good.

Let see, pizza for sure. We have a few local places that are really good. Mexican. Wingstop when we want absolute junk that is fast and good. SO likes Captain Ds. I do not like fish so not for me. There is a small BBQ place on the way home from one of the places SO delivers to, and it has enough room to park his 18 wheeler. They have the BEST cheeseburgers. So anytime he goes that way if they are open, he gets us cheeseburgers from there. For breakfast on a morning where i do not have time to get home from work and cook before SO leaves, McDonalds or Hardees.

When my kitchen counters are all clear, I love a takeout sushi/sashimi boat , wonderful splurge! That's what I had on mothers day. It gives me a respite from not only cooking but the ubiquitous cleaning.

Another occasional splurge , I loooove southern comfort food from Mama Carol's Soulfood - a local restaurant and she does it from scratch every day but it's across town so sometimes we indulge in Texas Roadhouse because it's closer.

All of those plastic containers do seem wasteful, but I do repurpose them when we have dinner parties to send home leftovers for our friends (we put on a southern feast back in March, dh made a full brisket, I did green beans with hamhock, friends brought other sides - leftovers for a week!)

I very seldom get take out and I don't like any of it very much, it has to be dire circumstances before I cave in.

I usually have one chili cheese dog at A&W per year with a root beer, but it gives me terrible heartburn so I have to convince myself it's worth it before I do it.

We live nearly 10 miles from the nearest grocery store and about 15 from any burger joint/pizza parlor/etc. so it's less time and work to just find something for supper than it is to drive that 20 miles round trip. There is no Indian/Thai/Mediterranean/etc available even if I drive into our small town, although there is plenty of fast food. Anything more exotic than KFC or Taco Bell requires a 50 mile one way trip. When I lived in my prior house we had a vibrant migrant community working on the farms so lots of freshly made tortillas, empanadas, tamales, rellenos, etc. Here everything is centered on the college students so lots of beer, wings and marijuana dispensaries.
