Which species hardwood floor? opinions
Comments (15)Thanks so much! I am really happy I went with waterlox. The look is just so much more natural. You know how poly and other floor finishes lay on top like a sheet of plastic? Waterlox doesn't look like that. It soaks into the wood so you can still see the grain and pores in the wood. Its kind of hard to explain, but the look is fantastic. When you first apply waterlox and for the first week or two, waterlox is darker than it's final color. As the polymers set up, it lightens. As far as the odor, it is STRONG. I used a $25 vapor respirator from lowes to apply mine and it blocked all odors. You will need to be out of the house for at least 24 hours after the last application. Dogs too, since their sense of smell is even greater than ours. And you know about wearing socks, not bare feet due to the oils, right? Just for a week or so. I'd keep the dogs off it too, unless you can talk them into wearing socks. Here's a picture taken after the 2nd coat. Although I heard white oak can look a little grayish, I see no signs of it at all. Maybe it's the waterlox making it look so warm....See MoreWhat kind and color hardwood floor do you have???
Comments (34)Howmuchlonger, You're welcome and thank you for the compliment. I'm sorry but I do not have an actual name for the stain on our cabinets. See, we have pine, mahogany and knotty alder doors, the cabinets are select alder and then the natural unstained oak floor. So I went to a small local paint store with a flooring plank and asked them to match the darker streaks in the plank to each of these different woods. They did a little blending here and there and come up with what you see in the pictures. And the best news was they didn't charge me any extra for doing all that. I know I wouldn't have gotten the same service had I gone to a mega-box-store like HD or Lowes....See MoreWhich hardwood floor to select?
Comments (4)Liang, Looks fun choices. Here are some other factors you may wish to consider. Structure of the flooring and where you plan on installing the product are also factors. Is this a single simple room/project (no cabinets, no layout changes)? Upstairs or down?...See MoreWhich hardwood floor do you like better?
Comments (20)I don't know what's going on--whether you're doing the color changes or the manufacturer has a sucky emulator. But I wouldn't buy any of those floors if that's a representation of the wood itself (not the colors). The boards are too wide and too stubby and too varied to look good. It's a low-grade floor with lots of short pieces and it's not graded to blend together. Boards that wide needs to be longer (all the boards) and it can't have such a contrast of color and grain from board to board....See MoreJennifer Svensson
