quality of hardwoods - they look the same to me!
Comments (10)Some manufacturers have higher standards of width, thickness, and milling than others. One manufacturer might produce a 3 inch wide board at +/- 1/100 inch, whereas another might be +/- 1/16" inch. Go for the higher standard as it will result in a better quality install. How do you determine who has the highest standards? Check with the flooring installation pros who use the stuff day in and day out. Also consider buying your wood local so that off-spec boards can be returned. Most flooring manufacturers are not in the forestry or logging business and many don't even operate their own sawmills and instead buy green or dried lumber on the regional lumber markets. That said, there are a few companies who are vertically integrated like Aacer flooring in Wisconsin who own their own woodlands and sawmills. The big box stores generally offer wood flooring made to low price points. How do they do this? They make it thinner, use lower cost woods, use cheaper plies in engineered products, and import from SE Asia. As long as you understand the specifications of what you are buying, you can compare apples to apples. Also beware that aluminum oxide pre-finished wood floor finishes can scratch, regardless of who makes it. If the floor has a gloss or semi-gloss sheen, then such scratches will be noticeable. This is especially so with darker colored floors where the surface scratches appear as light streaks. You might want to consider a satin or matte sheen if you wear your street shoes around the house and/or have kids....See MoreSame or different fabrics on these chairs?
Comments (8)Polkadots, What style chairs do you like?? Now that you are thinking about getting 2 new chairs your possibilities just opened up tremendously!! You have a great sofa to work with in a great room with a great paint color:) Are you in an area with nice furniture stores around you? If so, get thee rear out there and look/sit and spend time in the fabric room. Alot of nicer furniture stores also have access to good designer fabrics for drapes. Take an arm cover from your sofa and paint sample. Maybe even draw out your room to scale. I think your room can handle some larger chairs - not whoppers or anything but your not limited by space. Do you like anything like this? My mom actually has this fabric, it is fun. Something like this as 2 accent chairs - they also have these with skirts if you don't like so much wood. Which I would be tempted to do. Okay, never mind - I can't get that one to show up for some reason. I really love the fabrics you picked out. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Comments (28)Wow thanks KA for correcting me. I thought they were honed - they look so soft and matte finish. I don't think you were confused, I was just posting wrong. Glad you caught it. I do like how you can see a lot of the details with polished, but I just loved the feeling of it honed and how soft and marble-like it looked. I think if we did dark wood cabinets then we would get it polished because I've seen how gorgeous it looks with the dark wood. breezygirl - Thanks for making me laugh! I need to carry a handkerchief next time I see the slabs. cjc123 - Thanks for letting me know. DH will feel better reading that about the etching. mom2tykel - post pictures, I bet it will be gorgeous....See MoreIs the difference in quality worth the price?
Comments (11)In 2009, I purchased and installed Kraftmaid cabinets in my house. In 2011, I purchased and installed similar Waypoint cabinets in my next house. The price difference was significant. The quality difference was as well. I still live in the house with the Waypoint cabinets and they still look fine. The hinges/slides/soft-close is the biggest difference. Waypoint's are very disappointing compared to Kraftmaid. The finish on Waypoint wasn't as nice or even as Kraftmaid. As far as longevity, I don't think there would be a huge difference beyond hardware....See Moreblubird
